Presentation: 750ml brown bottle ... corked and caged. Batch #8. No freshness date on the bottle.

Appearance: Tarnish gold in colour with a rich and dense white lace, almost looks like frothed milk on top.

Smell: Exotic fruit, herbal and medicinal all make for a sweet aroma.

Taste: Light to medium in body with a sweet candy sugar malt flavour. This is soon cut by herbal, grain and phenolic flavour. Hop bitterness is complacent and is only in the background. Lots of spicy alcohol with hints of celery leaves and pine. Earthy yeast with its raw exotic fruity character laces the palate with more complexity. The fruity flavour lingers with a touch of grain and a heavy hand of warming alcohol ties up the finish.

Notes: Another stellar brew from Allagash. Top shelf here, perfect example of the style. Rich in intricacies and incredibly drinkable. One of the greatest American Beers brewed in the Belgian style.

Poured from batch #203.

Appearance: Deep yellow almost honey colored with slight amber hues. Nice two to three finger choppy cream colored head that held on and left a nice lace on the glass throughout the drink.

Smell: Yeasty with apricots, hints of cherries, earthy tones, hints of citrus. All and all very complex in the nose.

Taste: Quick hit of sweetness upfront, followed by a complex mix of fruit, heavy apricot and strange plum like flavors. Followed up quickly by yeasty earth tones and just the slightest hop kick. Clean finish, lingering just long enough to make you want another taste. Slight alcohol warming in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium carbonation, easy drinking especially for a tripel. Smooth and enjoyable.

Overall: One of the best tripels I've ever tried. Really look forward to trying future batches of this one to see if and how it changes.

DATE TASTED: March 4, 2014... GLASSWARE: Affligem chalice... OCCASION: going out with a bang before a sober Lenten journey begins... APPEARANCE: hazy active light amber body; thin, uneven snow white head; random tracings... AROMA: intense orange peel, coriander, slight raisin, and melon--complex and inviting...PALATE: fizzy, medium-bodied; cutting, warm aftertaste that is also refreshing early...TASTE: sweet honey puckers the lips; soft herbal textures round the flavor into an extremely pleasant experience; startlingly unassuming for a tripel... OVERALL: elevational! By the bottle's end, I was hoping for more...clean, floral hops sift between the stronger citric presence...a fitting Fat Tuesday celebratory beer, round, complex and alcoholic enough to be a party in itself...
