Tap sampled on 09/26/08 at Night of the Funk. Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a white head. Aroma of citrus and wood. Flavor of citrusy and piney wood. It tastes like you're licking a piece of freshly chopped wood. Oh, did I mention that this beer is very woodsy? Very unique, of course, and it didn't taste bad, but I'm not a beaver, so I don't really like wood as a flavor per se. Interesting to try but not too drink a lot of.

My beer was from the final cask of this brew remaining at the Allagash Brewery; it was poured as part of the Great Lost Bear's 30th Annibearsary Celebration (and was renamed GLB 30th Anniversary Ale in honor of this event). Served in a tulip glass. The beer is an opaque amber color and has virtually no head, just a few tiny bubbles where the surface of the beer comes in contact with the glass. Aromas of sherry, port and sweet red grapes are present. This beer has been aging in Allagash's barrel room for over four years and it tastes like it; the taste brings to mind an old, dusty bottle you find in your cellar, open up and taste and discover something amazing. I don't know how to say something tastes musty and mean it as a compliment, but that is what I want to do. The flavor is a bit woody, has some port, alcohol and something that reminds me of ginger ale of all things plus a slight alcohol burn. There is also some sourness; nothing overpowering, just surprising. There is an odd carbonation; it's like a flash of tiny pins in your mouth that are gone in an instant. I've never experienced anything like it in a beer. The carbonation, sourness, and dryness gives this beer a nice finish. It has a medium body, which by itself is unremarkable, but the aforementioned carbonation makes the mouthfeel special. It's too bad this will never be poured again, it's a good beer that more BAs should try.

Written by Jason Perkins from Allagash:
"As I told you when you were here, its origin began as 10th anniversary, but after aging in our barrel room, it has transformed into a totally new and completely unique beer. GLB 30th Anniversary Beer is a Amber colored Belgian Style Strong Ale that was carefully selected from Allagash's wild barrel room. It was aged in one American oak Bourbon barrel for over 4 years. The deep malty character is complimented by flavors of sherry and port as well as a tart finish. 11 % abv"

Had a few glasses at the GLB on Thursday. I've been wanting to try the 10th anniversary ale for quite a while since my missed my chance years ago, of course, I'm sure it's nothing like it used to be.

Pours a cloudy amber color with a decent sized head that leaves no lacing on the glass at all though, even throughout the drinking.

The aroma is a nice blend of malt, some funk and sour, and hints of oak.

The taste is just great and is similar to what Gargamel was like, a sour tart presence but not overwhelming with crisp carbonation that tickles the tongue and flavors that just pounce on you. For the strength, it was easily drinkable, although the alcohol is slightly present, after a couple you'll definitely feel it but it's hard to stop ordering more.

Happy B-Day GLB! Here's hoping for another excellent 30 years!
