Notes/Commercial Description:
Allagash Confluence Ale is created with a mixed fermentation; utilizing our house primary Belgian style yeast in combination with our proprietary Brettanomyces strain. The two yeast strains work in tandem creating a marriage between spice and fruit flavors that ultimately leave a lingering silky mouth feel. Confluence is brewed with a blend of both imported pilsner and domestic pale malts as well as a portion of caramel malt, resulting in a complex malty profile. Tettnang and East Kent Golding hops are added in the brew process to balance the intricate malty profile while adding a sweet and spicy citrus aroma. After fermentation, Confluence undergoes a lengthy aging process in stainless steel tanks to enhance the flavors. Prior to bottling, it is dry hopped with a Glacier hops, providing a pleasant balance of aromas.

This beer is between gold and straw in color, with a haze similar to a hefeweizen. The aroma is a tropical fruit and peppery spice. There is a passion fruit flavor with a subtle brett flavor of old socks (but old socks that taste good). I have definitely had several beers where the brett is a little overpowering, but this beer had a nice blend of fruity notes from the yeast and sweetness from the malt that works well with the brett. I really enjoyed it because all the flavors work really well together.

A: Blurred yellow color; minimal Snowa white head at the top; strong lacing in the glass.

S: Spice, bread and citrus

T: A tinge of sour to a yeast and mild citrus infusion; some fresh hops.

Great silly mouthfeel on this beer. However, the taste with its bold yeast strains is just a little too funky for me. It does start to mellow as it warms, but it's still a little wild for my liking. Which is a bit of a shame since I really like Allagash a lot. I may try this again since it did seem to almost grow on me as time went on. Still an excellent brewery that I want to continue exploring new beers with.

Appearance: Pours a clear straw hue with an eggshell head that took its time leaving. Lacing coats the glass. Nice legs.

Aroma: Wonderful for the brett lovers among us. Complex yet light, bready and floral. Just enough barnyard funk to make you curious, like spotting the white rabbit darting down its hole.

Flavor: Follows the nose, and now that I know it's barrel aged it makes perfect sense. The brett adds a nice sour finish that is smoothed by the aging process. Try it. Try it now.

Mouthfeel: Silky indeed. Medium-bodied. Gorgeous.

Overall: This might be in my top five desert-island beers. In fact, I'd like to curl up with a sixtel of this on an abandoned beach somewhere for a week or three. Tell drunken stories and whatnot.

S-lemon, wheat, funky and yeasty

T-lemon, orange, bready malt, yeast funk, slight sourness

Hazy golden-yellow color under a small, white head. Delightful sour, funky brett aroma: cherry, tart fruit, citris acidity, faint sugar cookie malt. Tart flavor, not so funky as the smell. Dry citrus rind, pepper, and fruit. Medium bodied, smooth, lightly carbonated. Very refreshing and easy to drink. Nice to find this on tap. I tend to overlook Allagash a lot because I have a hard time dropping $20 on a bottle.

Poured from tap into mason jar glass at coalhouse pizza, stamford, CT. Pours a golden slight orange color with slight slight head. Man I wish this was poured into a correct glass...
Nice brett/funk aromas, slight sweetness of malts. Taste of sweet grapevine malts, some mild funk and slight noble hop. Its super smooth and east drinker and a great intro into wild beers. Overall, good solid wild ale.

A: Pours a slightly hazy yellow gold color. Thin line of bright white head. Leaves some lacing. Lots of carbonation. Pretty beer here.

S: Smells of Brett and some white grape. That barnyard funkiness. Also getting the other customary players, lemon and tart green apple. Doesn't smell overly aggressive on the sour side or anything.

T: Flavor follows the smell. On the tip of the tongue you get some hop character, light citrus hops. Middle of the mouth you get that Brett character. Lemons. Touch of pepper. Apples and citrus. Dry wine like finish.

M: Very carbed. Between light and medium.

On-tap at Publick House. 12oz serving into a chalice.

A- Slightly hazy yellowish golden with about a quarter finger of foamy white head that has minimal bubbles but nice retention that leaves spotty lacing. Not too much carbonation.

S- Slightly tart lemon with spices, some citrus hops, and a bit of earthiness. Not too tart and definitely more spices then your average wild. About average to slightly above average aroma strength.

T- Lightly tart lemon, spices, some light hops, finishes with a weird aftertaste that almost resembles a slightly tart Belgian Triple with a slight artificial almost plastic taste. I did not care for the finish on this beer at all.

M- Fairly light, pretty much no alcohol burn which makes it fairly easy to drink, the light tartness is felt more on the tongue with a tingling effect more then in the taste or smell.

O- I wasn't overly impressed with this beer. I guess being a wild from Allagash and being highly recommended from the bar tender I was expecting a lot more. To me the beer felt like a slightly lemony Triple that they tried to sour a little bit. There wasn't much tartness and the tartness that was there I felt just didn't fit in the beer very well. I probably wouldn't order this again, but I could maybe see how some people might like it.

Imbibed at Good Karma on 9/4/12.

Pours a pale yellow orange, clear. Delicate head that laces well. Lemon hits the nose first, then a slightly sour note. Sour, not funky. Malt is all but undetectable, but I'd guess Belgian or German Pils due to its barely there aroma. I can't tell if I'm just not getting any hops or if it's the lemon I'm getting. Some very slight berry aroma as well. Light malt and lemon hints start the taste off. Definite Brett funkiness comes out in the flavor. Then it goes bitter, but it's fairly mild. Grassy and herbal. MF is more viscous than what I would have expected from the nose, but it makes sense when you see the ABV. I suspect some sugar was used in the boil, as this is a dry finishing beer.

Respectable sour, somewhat complex, but it needs something to give the malt some character. It's fleeting as it is. A fruity tone or malt flavor would make this more than a stage for something else.

Poured on-tap and served in a vase, the beer is a light, pale, lemon-yellow coloring with a sparse coating of white film. Aromas of white grape and cherry, semisweet and a bit sour. Flavors are subtle and lightly sour, with the grape flavors holding the palate. Similar to a pinot gris, but fuller bodied and carbonated. The aftertaste is light, and slightly filmy. Clean, crisp aftertaste. Very easy to drink, and very refreshing.

2010 Vintage on-tap at the Ginger Man in Norwalk, CT.

A-Pours a hazed golden hue. Head is off-white and large. Head looks like an uncooked biscuit. It retains excellently. Very attractive brew.

S-Whoa! This beer smells musty and dusty. Funky. Smells like hay and dirt. Spices and yeast along with vibrant pale-fleshed fruitiness. Very unique and complex.

T-Tastes like the nose. Dusty and musty. Funky yeast and underlying spices. Has an almost vinous flavor. The 2 years spent sitting around really meshed the flavors well with one another.

M-Lighter bodied with tons of bubbles. Dry, dry, dry. Easy to imbibe.

O/D-Didi not know what to expect from this beer and I was definitely surprised. I enjoyed it but did not love it. It was worth a try but I was left a bit disappointed.

On tap for Allagash night at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Pours a murky light yellow with an off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy splotches of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, spices, and some light sour/tart lemon-like aromas. Taste is very much the same but there is also a yeast flavor that I am getting as well. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer but it's a very mild sour all around.

Served on tap in a snifter at Bangers and Lace.

Appearance: Confluence has a faded dark yellow color, further muted by a haziness in the center of the glass. A frothy white head is modest in size from the tap pour but lingers for the duration of the glass, leaving a few splotches of lace down the glass.

Smell: The malt base is crackery, with some white pepper and spice that helps the smell pop. Some lemon zest, white pepper, and musty funk. The aroma is wild, yet delicate and not very complex.

Taste: The flavor starts with a fair cracker malt base, with some white pepper and general spiciness. Throughout the rest of the sip, a mellow lemon zest tartness blends with a Bretty funk. Nothing about the flavor feels that full developed, though. A chalky mineral flavor seems to protrude here and there as well.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the light side, with a full, creamy carbonation that has a bit of a crisp bite to it as well. Overall, it has a relaxed feel.

Overall: The first problem is that this is built using the Saison style as a base, which is not my favorite beer. Even so, Oro de Calabaza and Fantôme Saison are much more enjoyable. This is just a mediocre attempt at a wild. Maybe more time would improve it, or maybe it is better in the bottle, but I was not impressed. If the goal is to create a mild wild, they have succeeded.

On Tap at TJ's for their 8th Anniversary.

Confluence has a bright gold going into hay yellow color to it with a sparse amount of loose white bubbles, not creamy in looks and no streaks. Smell is grassy with some light fruit, pear, a nice whiff of minir bugs, brett. Some flower essense becoming pungent over time. Taste comes off with alot of refined brett with spicy Belgian yeast with some bitterness on the end. Not all that sour, I could not say this is even tart, more like a saison with brett in taste and feel. Confluence has a mediumish feel with active bubbles off the tap. This has a lot going for it taste wise but it aint all that wild. I would/could drink a bunch of this but at $25 a bottle i'll pass. Glad it's off the spout.

I don't remember when or where I first had this brew, but this review will apply to a recent tasting at TJ's in Paoli, PA.

Poured into a tulip glass a clear golden yellow. A fluff of white head was visible at the tap, but my glass was filled to the brim, so there was really no room for a head of any kind. Light aroma, grassy, flowery, with tones of light fruits: pear, peach, white grapes. The taste follows the smell, with a light fruitiness--pear, peach, white grapes, apple skin--not too thick or overbearing, grassy with a touch of funk, and hints of spicy yeast. Light mouthfeel, pretty dry in the finish, and quite drinkable overall, but not overly flavorful, and I do like my wild ale to be loaded with flavor. But this is still a nice selection, and lesser on the sour side for those who don't like sour beers.

The ideal brettanomyces beer for my taste. Still enough malt after the bacteria got started on it. Nice meaty taste of umame. Sharp but not sour. Long, fragrant nose of grain. Cloudy amber. Woody and brambly flavors. Like a wild Saison.

Definitely well made beer. A great sourish fruitiness with a dry malt flavor and an edge of bitterness. I would recommend this as a good start in exploring beers beyond the usual styles.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ (Seal Beach).

A- pours a murky dark straw color with a long-lasting, thick white head. Great lacing. 

S- spicy and citrusy. A little funky Brett character adds to the complexity. 

T- spicy with some Brett again. The sourness compliments but doesn't overwhelm. Get a little bit of vinous flavors, too. Finishes dry. 

M- medium-low body. High carbonation. 

O- a great Belgian-style ale. The sourness is mellow and adds complexity without detracting from drinkability.

*My 100th review; yay beer!*

On-tap at the Great Lost Bear in Portland, ME.

A: Pours a brilliant, semi-transparent and almost metallic orange with straw highlights. 1-finger head settles into a slick and leaves creamy lacing around the glass.

S: Spicy barnyard funk, white grape and a complex fruitiness. Smells immaculate.

T: Funk is over the top on this batch (much more than on previous batches, IMHO); reminiscent of their (usually) superior Interlude. Strong brettanomyces, fruit and supple center transitions into a dry, champagne-like feel feel and taste; not too far off from what Orval feels and tastes like. Very mineral-heavy.

M: Carbonation is medium and sticks with the whole taste, dying off at the very end and resulting in somewhat of a flat finish.

O: Aside from Interlude, this would have to be my favorite regular offering from Allagash. Bone-dry and mineral-focused, it's the perfect vehicle for the wild brett yeast that really transforms this. Can't think of a better 100th beer to review!

Perfect in (almost) every way.

Dullish and hazy orange, massive haze and white head to it. Chunky. Nose was largely caramel related, didn't really pick up anything fruity or sour from it, nor did was there any barrel aromas going on.

Taste, was a little offputting from the start, still lacked a sour or fruit profile, just seemed too plain. Was like a cross between a kolsch, berlinerweisse and hefeweizen. Carbonation was up like a kolsch, mild lemon and super mild tart like a berliner and the chewy haze and yeast of a hefe. And throw in some mineral water and hops solely for bittering. For $23? No way.

I have a bottle of this chillin at the pad, I hope it develops better than what I had on tap. I guess I'll have to search for the flavors that are supposed to be there, because I didn't find them the first time around.

Pours a hazed golden straw color, minimal spotty head, little lacing. Scent is muted barnyard funk from the brett, a light fruityness, bready, lightly spiced. Tasted was much more mild then expected, muddy earth, damp wood, barnyward, lightly metallic, the fruityness is replaced by a more savory taste, backbone is quite belgian with bready malts and yeast, light spicing. Lighter side of medium bodied, aggressive carbonation doesnt help mild palate. A very muted flavor profile allows the Belgian base to shine through, not a favorite.

Another on tap at Memphis Taproom,part of the no repeat beer week. Poured into a tulip a very hazy lighter golden color with a wimzy white heading that didn't stick around to long. The brett is not to powerful here in the nose or on the palate. Light crisp malty notes with lighter fruits dominate mostly.Just a dash of brett to give it that barnyard appeal. Very refreshing.

Confluence, Allagash, American Wild Ale, 7.4%

A: Pours with a light straw color with some hazy lack of clarity and a moderate fluffy head with big bubbles.

S: The lemon is there, some mild hints of jasmine, but not a ton of complexity or wild bret character that I was expecting.

T: I almost feel like this was mislabeled from a witbier or a white ale into an American Wild Ale. I get the hazy wheat notes, biscuit, some honey, but absolutely none of the traditional aspects of the style. I noted some mild green grape with light tartness, but you really have to search for it. There is certainly no vinegar lacto finish or a wild aspect as most people think of it. Finally there is a dry chardonnay finish that is exceptionally fleeting.

M: The mouthfeel is light and crisp, almost no coating and a watery base to it. I want to like this beer more, but the classification has me all confounded with how they either underdid or missed the mark so badly on the wild aspect. It isn’t bad, but it is wild as the BYU campus. A lack of wildness abounds.

D: This is an exceptionally drinkable beer given the light malt, clean finish and crisp dry character. In this instance, I don’t feel that it is a good thing because it missed the mark that it allegedly was striving for. I can make an exceptionally drinkable stout by buying an Abyss and watering it up with 18oz of tap water, does that improve the style? It is debatable I suppose. Debate concluded, the answer is a resounding “no.”

Narrative: Walter Chiu always had a sneaking suspicion that he wasn’t born in South Side Jamaica Queens. It was nothing that he could overtly point to, but, a substantiated hunch was enough. Sure, everyone told him he was Queens native, what with his transposed L’s and R’s, his affinity for Texas Instrument Products, and encyclopedic knowledge of MMO lore, yet, somehow he looked askance at their appraisals. “Wait wait wait, mom tell me again, as a child I used to play the 5 string bass incessantly? I don’t even know how to play the bass?” “Oh yes sweetie, we couldn’t stop playing that Sly and the Family Stone record you were so fond of. Those were the days.” He watched his mother carefully slice the uni into diaphanous strips but still rubbed his weak chin at the prospect that he was an avid fan of Thelonius Monk.

I had this on tap at Max's. Poured into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a clear golden straw color with a two finger fluffy white head. Leaves a layer of head with some nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: Mildly sweet crisp malt with hints of citrus, mainly lemon. Quite perfume like.

Taste: Mildly sweet crisp malt with hints of herbs and lemon. There is a very slight hint of soap, but it doesn't ruin things. The finish has a Belgian like herbal quality to it.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with prickly carbonation. The finish is dry.

Overall: This was quite different. I really enjoyed the lemon notes. Good balance and very crisp.

Pours a semi-hazed golden yellow color, lighter white head, decent retention with a few splashes of lacing on the glass.

Fragrant nose with white grapes and wine barrel, fruit sweetness, bretty tart, and faint alcohol.

A decent helping of fruit up front with white wine alcohol and tartness. Unripe white grapes with skin and apple tossed with brett tartness and lighter funk. A decent amount of sourness but not really overwhelming. Some malt body followed by dry fruits and white wine. Finishes with a touch of alcohol and fruit.

Lighter medium body, higher carbonation, dry and tingly on the tongue. Drinks really well, tasty sour profile although more tart than completely puckering. I would definitely drink this again.
