Allagash Confluence Ale is created with a mixed fermentation; utilizing our house primary Belgian style yeast in combination with our proprietary Brettanomyces strain. The two yeast strains work in tandem creating a marriage between spice and fruit flavors that ultimately leave a lingering silky mouth feel. Confluence is brewed with a blend of both imported pilsner and domestic pale malts as well as a portion of caramel malt, resulting in a complex malty profile. Tettnang and East Kent Golding hops are added in the brew process to balance the intricate malty profile while adding a sweet and spicy citrus aroma. After fermentation, Confluence undergoes a lengthy aging process in stainless steel tanks to enhance the flavors. Prior to bottling, it is dry hopped with a Glacier hops, providing a pleasant balance of aromas.

On tap at beachwood Seal Beach poured into a tulip. Golden yellow haze with tall white head and spotty lacing. Aroma is funky, pear, wine, honey, and some spice. Flavor was tart pear/cherry, grassy and earthy bitterness, a touch of grain sweetness. Light bodied, silky texture, med-high prickly carbonation, dry finish.

Comes out of the tap a dark honey golden with a thick, fine-bubbled, cream-color head that sticks around for a while and leaves generous lacing. Crisp aroma has a strong overtone of apple, rather like a cider. Lip-smacking flavor has a malty core and a strong, slightly sweet, slightly tart apple overtone and a whisper of butterscotch. Firm texture has a good amount of tingle and fizz, leaving a nice fruity and tart finish.

Light and fruity with a bretty funky earthy edge to it. Cereal grains and bits of earthy hops round this one out nicely.

A: cloudy; straw colored; 1 finger white head that receded to a thick ring; moderate lacing;

S: heavy clove; tart;

T: banana up front with clove in the background; they even out at mid-palate, but banana comes back strong at the finish; tartness build from mid-palate and last long after the swallow;

M: light bodied; moderate carbonation: dry;

O: would have liked less banana from the yeast and more citrus and apricot/peach; the dry finish was interesting;

Pours a golden color with a white head and good clarity. The aroma is sweet and fruity, with an earthy, almost spicy phenolic yeast element. The taste borders on tart with notes of citrus, green grape, honey, lavender, and white pepper. Finishes clean and even, semi dry. This is a very drinkable ale, hard to do a review on because it was gone so quick.

Sour Brett aromas immediately greet the nose when you open this wild yeast sweetheart followed by light malt aromas and spicy hops.
It pours hazy straw to gold under a ferocious, fluffy, very finely bubbled persistent 3" foam cap. the cap slowly drops to a thick, lumpy mass.
Pale malt flavors with a touch of sweet balance the moderate lemony tartness dry out and recede into a medium hop bitterness on the finish. Hints of peach and other light fruits lurk behind the lemony tartness.
The intensely fine Brettanomyces driven carbonation gives the body an airy, moussey fee. Very refreshing and very drinkable. l

Poured from the monsterous cork and cage into an Allagash chalice.

A: A hazy pale golden hue, nice 3 finger head that drops to a 6mm disk. Lacing is spotty with hint of legs. Tight bubbles.

S: Yeast and malt are dominant. Classic yeast profile with sweet and breadiness and gentle spiciness balanced by a citrus note in the profile.

T: Amazing apricot and citrus notes and a slight metallic musty note combined with white pepper.

M: Creamy on the uptake, smoothness and then drops into a slightly sharp metallic and sour note, then finishes with a slightly malt-dry finish. Metallic and sourness hangs around forever.

O: Very good bretted notes brings a slight gentle sourness that perfectly complements the brew. Carbo is spot on too, lending to that creamy initial hit.

2014 bottle. Hazy, light-amber appearance. Plenty of foam but it's not out of control. Good head retention and lacing characteristics. Aroma is excellent -- Brett really worked some magic. Very ripe stone fruit upfront, like apricot. Very floral hop aroma, the dry hopping showing through. Funk is restrained -- a bit of leather and old, musty paper.

Mostly dry flavor profile with fruit characteristics. Some honeyed sweetness mid-palate that fades toward the finish. Ripe white grape, peach, and/or apricot. A bit bland and musty on the finish. Very fine, frothy carbonation that's quite soft.

A very interesting Belgian ale, similar to Matilda from Goose Island. Can't really recommend over the latter due to the price premium, but it's got a killer aroma and great flavor.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a Chimay goblet.

A: Golden amber body, hazy, some carbonation. Fizzy head builds fast, recedes faster. Bubbly ring at glass edge, with a layer in the center of the surface.

S: Funky, grassy scent. Notes of citrus and spice.

T: Starts mild and sweet. Quickly gives over to the funk of the brett. Bubblegum, straw, orange, mildly spiced. Seems to be a hint of dark fruit, but no more.

M: Silky, light to medium mouthfeel. Tingly carbonation. No booziness at all.

O: Really interesting beer. Has hints of farmhouse, but also hints of standard Belgian ale. The farmhouse characters are the dominant, with the brett aromas and flavors clear and forward. Interesting. If you like farmhouse, this is for you.

On-tap at a beer dinner.

Appearance - very clear golden color, as thick a head as the glass would hold - two fingers. Fell to a nice ring around the glass.

Aroma - a lot in this beer. Bread and yeast hit right away. Spiciness and citrus notes drift in - not overly powerful, but very pleasant. Some earthiness/funk comes in as well but not overwhelming. A bit floral as well.

Taste - this beer morphed on every sip. The malt and yeast character were pretty constant but everything else changed with each taste. A little sour, a little fruity (apricot), a bit of citrus, some spice with pepper noticeable on the finish. A bit of a metallic taste that was not unpleasant.

Mouthfeel - almost creamy/chalky with a dry finish. The little metallic twang hung around a bit, but not unpleasant.

Overall, felt this beer is very flavorful, but I found the flavors to be ephemeral - nothing lasted long and it seemed to change. There's nothing definitive in the flavor - there's a lot of different components that almost seem to conflict, but the flavors change. Very interesting and thought-provoking brew.

Brassy in color with an off-white head and thin lacing left behind. Has an obvious brett nose with a little spice mixed in. Tastes of orange peel, white grape, a bit of grain and hint of salt at the end. Medium in body with well-hidden alcohol. Well-balanced and flavorful all the way through.

This beer is between gold and straw in color, with a haze similar to a hefeweizen. The aroma is a tropical fruit and peppery spice. There is a passion fruit flavor with a subtle brett flavor of old socks (but old socks that taste good). I have definitely had several beers where the brett is a little overpowering, but this beer had a nice blend of fruity notes from the yeast and sweetness from the malt that works well with the brett. I really enjoyed it because all the flavors work really well together.

The beer pours a very strong and foamy clean white head. The head lasts a while and the lacing on the glass form a perfect ring around the inside of the glass. The beer itself is a clear yellowish copper. The beer smell is fairly complex with a hint of tartiness. The smell has bits of a bread smell from the malts. The tarty Brett smell is there as well and is slightly obscured by the white wine smell as well as the hops. The hops are fairly close to a slightly grassy smell and orangey smell. The white grapes smell makes it difficult to properly distinguish. The beer taste is different from the smell. The beer taste is primarily hops mixed with the Brett. The malts make an appearance as a backbone for the taste and balances out the hops and Brett. In addition to the hops, the beer also has a white wine taste to it with hints of citrus orange. The feels is fairly clean and goes down similar to water. The finish is fairly dry. Overall, a pretty good beer and one that I might get again.

Great silly mouthfeel on this beer. However, the taste with its bold yeast strains is just a little too funky for me. It does start to mellow as it warms, but it's still a little wild for my liking. Which is a bit of a shame since I really like Allagash a lot. I may try this again since it did seem to almost grow on me as time went on. Still an excellent brewery that I want to continue exploring new beers with.

Pushing more and more into the world of wine, the dry ales of Allagash force an incredible level of dryness, fruitiness and acidity that's description reads much more vinous than beer-like.

The ale pours with a sparkling light gold as it streams with expressive carbonation. Easily mistaken for champagne, its bright clarity pops with its slightly fizzy, slightly frothy effervescence. Its light and fluffy head is loosely knit and quickly succumbs to its acidity and its dry malt body. With little lace on the glass- the ale looks more like chardonnay than Belgian ale.

Its vibrant aroma is bountiful with tart white grape, apple, lime and a cork-like mustiness. Mild earthen tones of grass, leaf and dried citrus peels extend into a mild white pepper note. Its acidic character tickles the nose heading into that first sip.

Its cidery taste is dry and acute with green apple, white grapes, limes and grapefruit. Its short-lived bready sweetness is like water crackers that dissolve on the front of the tongue. Its acidic middle palate introduces those tart and under-ripened fruits and berries until the hoppy finish leads to mild spicy bitterness that trails with lemongrass and hay.

The ale bounces off the tongue with ease as its strong bubbles accents its dryness and forces a quick and assured finish, much sooner than the mouth prefers. This causes much of its exploration of taste to occur in aftertaste rather than its initial taste. As the ale evaporates off the palate, it finishes quick, clean and acidic; and with slight herbal astringency and mild powdery wood texture.

Forget champagne. For those special celebrations, reach for Confluence Ale instead. Its added earthen complexity makes for a greater culinary experience without sacrificing the bubbles, body or bounce.

A: A hazy yellow color, with a slight transparency but barely there, a nice frothy white head at the top that leaves a little bit of lacing around the glass.

S: Spice and citrus are very present up front, a little hint of brown sugar and bready nose as well.

T: A good tasting beer, hit with the bread and yeast right away, that washes away with a sweetness and bitterness from the fresh hops.

M: Light bodied, good amount of carbonation, dry finish.

O: Overall a good well balanced beer from Allagash, very relaxing brew, subtle with good flavors and a dry unique finish.

Appearance: Pours a clear straw hue with an eggshell head that took its time leaving. Lacing coats the glass. Nice legs.

Aroma: Wonderful for the brett lovers among us. Complex yet light, bready and floral. Just enough barnyard funk to make you curious, like spotting the white rabbit darting down its hole.

Flavor: Follows the nose, and now that I know it's barrel aged it makes perfect sense. The brett adds a nice sour finish that is smoothed by the aging process. Try it. Try it now.

Mouthfeel: Silky indeed. Medium-bodied. Gorgeous.

Overall: This might be in my top five desert-island beers. In fact, I'd like to curl up with a sixtel of this on an abandoned beach somewhere for a week or three. Tell drunken stories and whatnot.

Confluence June 2013 poured into a pint glass.
A: Best part is the pillowy white bead with rising bubbles. Golden clear color
S: Barnyard funk in the first smell with citrus (orange/citrus) backing it up
Taste/Mouthfeel: upfront funk leads into some slightly tart citrus notes and dry finish. A touch watery which hurts it

Overall a very tasty beer that could have a touch less funk and a bit more complexity

I have just begun to explore the crazy world, i.e., the brett world. I have not had too much experience with the wild yeast, but have been trying to get my hand on as many brett beers as I can. Without further ado:

Appearance: Golden, dark straw, orange-yellow sublimity -- the beer looks absolutely wonderful. It has a finger and half of a foamy, white head that dissipates while you drink, but very, very slowly - turning into the romantic drapery we call, "lacing."

Smell: A good amount of tartness, smells like this is mostly dominated by the Brett - exciting! The other aromas are citrus spiciness, slight amount of booze and that distinctive aroma that is conjured by the dry hopping. The dry hopping smells nice - like the most arid desert in the world met an oasis of happy hop plants. It even -smells- dry.

Taste: It's a solid brew. The brett comes out only mildly in the taste - a very subtle tartness. The other flavors are spiciness, some citrus notes, somewhat sweet but this beer is really dominated by the dry hopping. The brett seems to be overpowered by the dry hopping and the rest of the beer really follows the hops' lead. You get a tinge of sourness at the start of the palette and the rest is really dry hops.

Mouthfeel: Not even halfway through this beer and it feels as though I need more glasses of water than anything. It dries your mouth OUT. It reminds me of the super dry characteristic of how red wines finish but the beginning of the palette feels like a white wine. It starts with a good carbonated kick -- the bubbles really start the palette off nicely.

Overall: I think this beer would be much better with age. The brett is completely overpowered by the dry hops. It makes a beer that you -need- to finish because you paid $21.75 for it and by no means is it bad or off-tasting, so you enjoy to continually sip it. However, you also recognize that for the prestige that Allagash has and the craftsmanship of a dry hopped, brett beer that you think this should be more complex... and that's why this should be aged. Let the dry hops subside, let the brett increase in complexity, let it sit and wait... and age.

TL;DR: the smell is fantastic, the taste is confused, the mouthfeel is super, super, super dry. overall, the beer needs to age to be worth your cash.

Nice fruity Brett in the nose as well as some nice hop character. Def best fresh or with a couple years on it. Let the dry hops die out a little and the Brett take over more and increase complexity. Pours nice with a decent head. Interludes dry hopped cousin if you will.

Pours a hazy, golden color. Very much like a Belgian ale, with a clean, white, three-finger head. Smells like a dubbel almost - has that fruity, Belgian smell to it. Taste is like a mixture of 25% sour and 75% dubbel. There's a tiny, tiny hint of sour. But the beer is very light, has a very nice lacing on the glass as you drink it down. Very reminiscent of a dubbel, with the fruit taste. Very enjoyable beer - will definitely have again.
