Allagash Confluence Ale is created with a mixed fermentation; utilizing our house primary Belgian style yeast in combination with our proprietary Brettanomyces strain. The two yeast strains work in tandem creating a marriage between spice and fruit flavors that ultimately leave a lingering silky mouth feel. Confluence is brewed with a blend of both imported pilsner and domestic pale malts as well as a portion of caramel malt, resulting in a complex malty profile. Tettnang and East Kent Golding hops are added in the brew process to balance the intricate malty profile while adding a sweet and spicy citrus aroma. After fermentation, Confluence undergoes a lengthy aging process in stainless steel tanks to enhance the flavors. Prior to bottling, it is dry hopped with a Glacier hops, providing a pleasant balance of aromas.

On-tap 6/22/10 at Rose Alley Ale House in New Bedford, MA, served in a small tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a short white head that fades slowly and leaves a very thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of tart fruit, caramelized malts, Belgian yeast and some spice.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty malt character and a strong Belgian yeast backbone. Then there are mildly sweet flavors of tart fruit and caramel than come in. The hops presence is very mild but the beer still has a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium-to-heavy body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Very tasty, goes down very easily, slightly filling, good kick, good representation of style, it's a little heavier than most that I've had in the style but there's enough complexity and flavor to make worth drinking for a long time.

Had on tap @ Armsby Abbey.

A: Pasty white fizzy 1.5 finger head that fades slowly over a very hazy golden wheat colored beer.

N: Lots o Belgian wit aromas, with citrus, coriander, spices, lemon zest, some barnyard funk, biscuit, and more Belgian malts, and all with a little sour fruit.

T: More Barnyard funk to start, some yeasty flavors, but not too heavy for a wild. Pretty dry with more Belgian and biscuity malt flavors. Slight lemongrass and citrus with a little hoppy bitterness. A dry fluffy wit beer taste mostly with some added wild funk.

M: Medium but slightly watery with lots of carbonation (bottle condition has better carbonation though)

F: very dry and gets quite a bit of bitterness from some spicy hops that seem to really shine through on the finish. More lingering dry earthy barnyard funk, spicy with a little warming booze.

I had this on tap at Max's. Poured into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a clear golden straw color with a two finger fluffy white head. Leaves a layer of head with some nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: Mildly sweet crisp malt with hints of citrus, mainly lemon. Quite perfume like.

Taste: Mildly sweet crisp malt with hints of herbs and lemon. There is a very slight hint of soap, but it doesn't ruin things. The finish has a Belgian like herbal quality to it.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with prickly carbonation. The finish is dry.

Overall: This was quite different. I really enjoyed the lemon notes. Good balance and very crisp.

The ideal brettanomyces beer for my taste. Still enough malt after the bacteria got started on it. Nice meaty taste of umame. Sharp but not sour. Long, fragrant nose of grain. Cloudy amber. Woody and brambly flavors. Like a wild Saison.

Definitely well made beer. A great sourish fruitiness with a dry malt flavor and an edge of bitterness. I would recommend this as a good start in exploring beers beyond the usual styles.

I don't remember when or where I first had this brew, but this review will apply to a recent tasting at TJ's in Paoli, PA.

Poured into a tulip glass a clear golden yellow. A fluff of white head was visible at the tap, but my glass was filled to the brim, so there was really no room for a head of any kind. Light aroma, grassy, flowery, with tones of light fruits: pear, peach, white grapes. The taste follows the smell, with a light fruitiness--pear, peach, white grapes, apple skin--not too thick or overbearing, grassy with a touch of funk, and hints of spicy yeast. Light mouthfeel, pretty dry in the finish, and quite drinkable overall, but not overly flavorful, and I do like my wild ale to be loaded with flavor. But this is still a nice selection, and lesser on the sour side for those who don't like sour beers.

Served in a tulip. I'm big into wilds and sours these days, this one is not as sour as you might expect or hope if you are like me. It was still an OK beer, maybe a Belgian pale ale sort of beer with a slight sour edge.

Beer is yellow and hazy. Forms a thin white head that breaks and gravitates toward the glass but fails to leave any lacing on the walls. Carbonation is moderate to low.

Beer's aroma is quite citric and some lactic sour notes. Very nice sour aroma.

The beer itself is not so sour. There is an odd citrus bitterness to it and some zest, only slightly citric based sourness and almost no lactic notes. Finishes cleanly...not my favorite sour but its OK as far as a beer goes.

From 09/20/12 notes. Pick this up at the Whole Foods on Bowery in NYC a few days ago, poured from a 750ml bottle into my Bell's tulip.

a - Pours a hazy bright yellow color with one finger of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident. Looks pretty good.

s - Smells of citrus hops, Brett, oranges, oak, lemon, earthy notes, light funk, and some apples and fruity malts. Very nice and lots of brett which I like.

t - Tastes of brett, oranges, fruity malts, lemon, citrus hops, hay, earthy notes, and bready malts. Taste has more lemon and citrus than the nose. Again, very nice.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation, pretty easy to drink. Pretty smooth mouthfeel.

o - Overall a very nice beer and another solid wild from Allagash. Not a sour beer at all, but some light funk and a ton of oranges and brett. Very easy to drink and something I would certainly recommend if you like brett. I will certainly be having it again.

Cage-corked 750 ml bottle. Bottled in January 2009. Poured into wide-mouth glass.

As I was twisting off the cage wiring, the cork shot out with a loud pop. Be careful opening this one! The foam went up the neck and some leaked out, but fortunately it stopped short of being a "gusher".

Pours a bright golden with a large pillowy, creamy head that slowly descends to a lasting cover. Lacing sticks. This is one good looking brew!

The smell is very funky and musty - barnyard and grassy notes. Sweettart candy is there. I love the smell of this one!

The taste is milder than the aroma. It has some funk and white grape notes, with a bitter hop touch. Alcohol is well-hidden/incorporated. Finishes dry.

It has an effervescent, creamy and smooth light body.

This drinks very easily - a nice funkyish brew.

June 2012 vintage. 7.40%. 750 ml brown glass bottle with hood and wire cap over a cork acquired at Wally's Wine in Westwood, California for $24.99 (ouch!) and served into a Uinta pilsner glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are quite high; I love Allagash. That said, Odyssey was a disappointment, and I'm usually underwhelmed by brett based beers that are supposedly excellent. Plus, this beer's price really gives it big shoes to fill.

Served straight from the refrigerator and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Poured slowly per the label's instructions. No carbonation issues are expected.

A: Pours a four finger beige colour head of pleasant rolling foam, nice thickness, some cream, and great retention for the high ABV. Body colour is a murky pale yellow; nontransparent but non-opaque. No yeast particles are visible, but then I did pour slowly and this is the top of a 750. No bubble show. There's nothing unique or particularly special about it, but it looks generally appealing.

Sm: Lemongrass accompanied by pleasant lemon citrus twang. Grassy and lightly fruity - bright fruit. Somewhat tropical but not from hops per se; I even get some mango or perhaps pineapple. A gorgeous brettanomyces aroma; probably the best I've ever experienced. Some yeast with little Belgian or biscuit character at all. Some lavender and middling insubstantial spicing. It's definitely alive. Soft and fragrant, yet understated and subtle. Angelic and light. I'm quite excited to try it, but I'm not sensing a whole lot of depth or complexity here. I think based the aroma its subtlety will be its strength. A mild strength aroma.

T: Wow. Light subtle hopping complements the clean build of the foundation, adding masterfully light strokes of well-layered citrus and touches of lemongrass all over it. Very nicely balanced, with a clean bright pale malt foundation. Pineapple, mango, and other bright fruits come through but always in little fleeting touches. Not at all artificial. Lightly tart - ever so subtle and hardly noticeable until you identify it. Delightfully bretty, without being too biscuity or yeasty. It's very refreshing and enjoyable. I've never experienced bretts so well used. It has just enough body. No alcohol is detectable; I'd probably guess this was 6% if you asked me blind. Pear, lavender, spices, light phenols for the pretentious-minded, and incredibly subtly executed lemon notes throughout. This is not the crappy lemon you find in many beers in this style; it works well here and is reserved. A fascinating beer in the style, but as predicted it does impress with subtlety rather than complexity. Very well put together. Bravo, Allagash.

Mf: Silky smooth with some seeping coarseness in the second act to coax out the flavour. Perfect dryness for the style, suiting the flavours obscenely well. Clean, refreshing, and light. Seems tailored to its specific flavours. It gets more wet and smooth on the finish for a refreshing effect. Ludicrously good.

Dr: Extremely drinkable. Refreshing at its high ABV - which you'd never notice. One of the few pricey brett beers that's really impressed me. That said, it is rather pricey for its quality. Yes, it's very good. But it isn't great. I'm pleased with it having had it once, but I don't know that I'd try it again from the bottle. Probably on draught. I could quaff this all night, and I'm looking forward to finishing the bottle. Nice to see a brett beer with a little tartness. Another success from Allagash. I just wish it was about half its price.

A great candidate for pairing with simple couscous, a light simple salad, or plain unsalted pretzels.

Probably a decent candidate for aging.

Serve cold.

Drank back in June to celebrate the Mavericks winning the NBA title. The bottle is labeled February 2010.

The beer pours a golden color with a large white head. The aroma is very nice. I get a lot of leathery brett notes, as well as some light funk and Belgian yeast. There is also a nice fruit component of lemons and apricots.

The flavor is very dry. I get a lot of brett and leather, with some orange mixed in. The Belgian yeast comes through nicely, as do some pepper and coriander notes. There is some light funk and some light tartness.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A very careful pour yields a billowing, off-white colored head that starts out a glass filling four-fingers in height, plus adds an additional, almost two-fingers of structurally sound height above the rim of my 25cl tulip glass. The head only slowly recedes, forming nice structural formations as it does so as well as leaving nice lacing patterns on the sides of my glass. Nice aromas of ripe pear, floral melon and apple are noticed as I visually inspect this beer. The beer is a hazy, pale amber color that shows an orange-gold hue when held up to the light. A nice, slightly grassy, cracker-like grain aromatic quickly yields to a firm, but not dominating, funky Brettanomyces note that provides notes of light phenols, a musty blanket note, plus a touch of muskiness. The fruit character is the most recognizable character in the nose though, with nice notes of Meyer Lemon, orange zest, and a touch of honeysuckle joining the afore-mentioned ripe fruit notes. There is an earthy yeastiness to the aroma that melds nicely with the fresh grain notes.

Nice and effervescent as it hits my tongue, the beer is a bit drier than the expressive, up front fruit aromatics might have suggested. This is very light bodied, but still has a hint of body and viscousness to it especially in the finish where it manages to just stick to the palate. Slightly tart and tasting of ripe green apples, some floral melon qualities as well as some notes of ripe pear. These notes morph into a orange-zest like citrus note towards the finish that tends to linger for a bit on the palate. Musty Brettanomyces notes add a certain woody white pepper note, a touch of phenolic soaked cotton ball flavors, some spiciness that is similar to oak. There is some more structure in the finish from a nice hop bitterness that is noticeable, but not domineering. There is perhaps just a hint of malt sweetness to this beer, much of the time I think I am imagining it because of the floral fruit notes found here, but there does seem to be a touch of something that boosts the malt character just a hint. Other malt notes of unsalted saltine crackers, a touch of grassiness and a nice crushed pale malt note.

This beer remains stubbornly effervescent until the end of the bottle; this works quite well with this quaffable-beyond-its-alcohol beer. I like the balance in the flavor between the spicy fermentation notes, the fruit, the pale malt and the fresh hop character that this brew has. At times the zesty hop character really comes through quite well; this must have been quite a bit more hoppy when freshly released. It is eminently quaffable with just enough Brettanomyces influence to keep my interest piqued throughout. Definitely a wonderful effort and I like that the Allagash house Brett strain has run rough-shod over the rest of the beer (though that can be nice at times too). I wish I had a couple more bottles of this to age.

Since I didn't want to pony up a Jackson for a bottle, I was happy to see it on-tap at Beachwood,

A: Pours a cloudy yellow with a puffy looking white head, good lace.

S: White pepper, Brett is clearly evident, a yeasty smell as opposed to a bacterial one as most wilds tend to have.

T: Belgian fermented malt, lemon rind, with heavy white pepper and a ton of Brett which I greatly enjoyed. Bitter yeast flavours. Has a sourness which is real light on the finish.

M: Very dry, light acidity, medium-bodied, a very smooth beer.

D: This was very different than most wild ales you come across, it reminded me of a mix of Orval and Interlude in some ways. This beer is still heavily Belgian-influenced with a hint of America.

A: Pours a hazy golden yellow with a two finger tall fluffy white head. Great head retention and great lacing on this beer.

S: Light to moderate aromas of sourness, lemon, and vanilla.

T: Flavors of wheat upfront followed by sourness and some black pepper. Very well balanced.

M: Light bodied with a light amount of carbonation and a very dry finish.

O: Very approachable and very drinkable - this would be a great introductory beer for someone that had no prior experience with brett. Very sessionable and a regular beer for me (I think I have consumed like four 750 ml bottles in the last six months)

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in January 2009 (pushing 4 years old). Cork blew off as soon as I untwisted the cork, no beer was lost to gushing. Pours hazy golden amber color with a nice 2-3 finger fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of huge tart apple, lemon zest, orange, pear, strawberry, hay, grass, barnyard funk, earth, herbal, pepper, and yeast spiciness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity. Taste of lemon, pear, apple, orange zest, hay, grass, earth, herbal, pepper, funk, and light yeast spiciness. Light earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruit, citrus, grass, hay, pepper, funk, earth, and yeast spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Great balance and complexity of flavors; zero cloying flavors on the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a lightly creamy and very crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with nearly zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Belgian strong pale with brett added! Awesome flavor complexity and balance; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. An incredibly enjoyable offering.
