Fluxus '09 was brewed in the style of the traditional Saison. For our twist, we added sweet potatoes, black pepper and a generous amount of hops. Sweet potatoes not only enhance its pale orange appearance, they contribute significant body. Centennial hops produce a bold grapefruit aroma, which is followed by a mild, honeysuckle sweetness. The intensity of both the pepper and hops are felt throughout, leaving a lingering warmth on the tongue. Papya, citrus and pepper dominate the flavor profile.

750mL bottle that I picked up from who knows where about 2 years ago...been holding onto it for the right occasion. That turned out to be homemade sweet potato fries. Who'd have thought? Poured into a tulip.

Crisp and clear amber in color, and lively carbonation are evident. The cork nearly pushes itself out of the bottle. The head is coarse, fine, and disappears quickly. Streamers remain, and they look pretty as they fizz through the botdy of the beer.

The aroma and flavor are very similar. Initial impressions are of bready yeast, white pepper, clove, and a balance with the black pepper that was added to the brew. Hints of sweetness and brown sugar. There is a very mild flavor of sweet potato that comes together way better than I expected it to. Very well rounded, the finish is dry and leaves a hint of brown sugar, light molasses, and again, the spice. Lacking some fruity esters, lacking any funk, which I suppose it didn't need, but Allagash does great stuff with their brett strain, so I was hoping.

Spritzy and light on the palate, Allagash continues to impress with their Belgian offerings. Another well-balanced ale that manages to be both unique and delicious.

How served: 750ml corked and caged bottle poured into a De Dolle Brouwers Oebier glass.

Tasted on: March 2, 2013

Notes: This is from batch #1. This beer is no longer brewed. This Ale is Brewed with Sweet Potatoes & Black Pepper

A: The cork came out of the bottle with a nice “pop”. The beer poured a mostly clear light golden color with a few floaters. The head was white and about 2 fingers high which left a thin sticky lacing on the glass.

N: The nose was very floral, herbal and peppery. There were also hints of honey and an earthy funkiness.

T: The 1st thing that hits me as I tasted this beer is the ground pepper and the spices from the yeast. Mid way through I picked up some sweetness from the malts, brown sugar and a mild orangey flavor which mixed with the pepper, spices and earth flavors as well as a very faint pumpin pie (guess the punpkin pie was from the sweet potato). This beer finishes on the dry side with a very refreshing finishes which lingers on the tongue.

M: This beer had a medium crisp body with a nice carbonation level.

O: Overall I did this was a very delicious beer and very true to the Saison style, hopeful someday Allagash will make this one again.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 2009 batch 2. Pours lightly cloudy golden orange color with a nice 2-3 finger fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big pear, apple, sweet potato, pepper, clove, grape, earth, caramel, herbal, and yeast spices. Fantastic aromas with huge complexity and great balance; does not feel overly sweet at all. Taste of pear, grape, sweet potato, biscuit, brown sugar, pepper, herbal, earth, clove, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of pear, grape, biscuit, brown sugar, pepper, caramel, herbal, earth, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Great flavor balance and complexity; no cloying flavors at all, slightly dry on the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a lightly slick and quite crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic saison style! Very high complexity with great balance; and very crisp and smooth sip on. Highly enjoyable stuff!

Served in a Duvel tulip glass.

A discounted bottle means I'm finally biting. This stuff pours a hazy auburn-gold topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises sweet biscuit, light honey, Belgian yeast, light green apple, clove, a pinch of nutmeg, and a smattering of light hay throughout the background. The taste brings in more of the same, with an earthier character all around, and a touch of added sweetness throughout. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a pretty nice saison, though I'm not sure the sweet potato really shined through as much as it could have. Of course, this could be from the couple years of age...
