On tap at Pizzeria Paradiso.

Pours somewhat cloudy with tons of visible carbonation. Color is a pinkish-red with a bit of a copper hue to it. Think head of fizzy pink-tinged bubbles that go away fairly quickly, leaving a thin collar.

The nose has a light fruity presence. Red fruit, to be a bit more specific. As it is served, it is hard to pick out anything specifically. Some lactic character behind that along with a bit of earthy funk.

The flavor is quite nice. It starts out with a hefty hit of fresh, tart raspberries, following that up with some additional acidity. Lactic all the way with some from the fruit. Nothing acetic. Pretty good Brett character. Seems like Brett B and L, though Allagash claims to have a house Brett, so who knows.

Bottle is light with carbonation that is quite lively. Effervescent to say the least. Dry finish, with a moderate level of acidity hanging onto the palate for just a bit, yet it's not bracing to the point where I feel like I need to rest between sips.

Overall, this is really quite nice and I'm glad that I stopped in for it. The fruit and acidity are extremely well balanced and the beer itself is very drinkable. Highly recommended. Now I need to find a bottle of this. (1,225 characters)

This is it, the last one for this round of blind bif. This one is a smaller corked & caged bottle.

Pours an amber hue that glows when held up to the light. An aggressive pour yields a minimal head, that has a coral color. Whatever head there was fades quick, and leaves next to no lacing, spots, ring, etc... 3.75

Dare I say that this smells like an Italian hookers armpit? To say that its' funky is an understatement! I smell ripe cheese, and ripe cherries. Funks me right up the nose. Is this the horse-blanket smell that I have read about? Call me weird, but I kinda like it. 4.0

Wow is this a tasty mother? There is a lot more going on in the flavor department. Tart, and funky, with just enough sweetness to keep it balanced. I taste cranberry, Cherry Sucrets, lemon, green apple, balsamic vinegar, and an earthy funk.

It has a medium body, yet is effervescent. It dances on my tongue, and has a champagne like dryness. It really delivers the flavors well. 4.0

I must admit I was horrified with the first sniff, but this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. A sipper that is fun to savor. 4.0

My guess is an American Wild Ale by Allagash. And it is an Old HLT by Allagash.

All I can say is wow! What a great end to a great box.

375ml bottle into an Old Engine Oil snifter. Big thanks to Dan for sharing this one. A new Allagash sour is always cause for celebration.

A: Yeasty amber body with some off-white froth on top. Ok.

S: Deep, robust sourness, with a nice balance of tart cherry and lemony, grassy funk. Simple, and simply awesome.

T: Cherries are prominent without being dominant, with some funk and bitterness building on the finish. Some nice earthiness. Really good, but not quite as fresh and deep as the nose.

M: Medium body, full of creamy froth. A bit too airy, but good.

O: Excellent beer, plain and simple. It lacks the vivacious sourness of the Coolship brews (not to mention their depth of complexity), but it's worth seeking out in its own right.

Big white head, medium brown body, hazy.

Massively tart nose, maybe sour cherries.

Surprisingly light, some apple cider vinegar, and a trace of cherries. Very Cantillon-seque, but balanced. Not too sour.

Quite bright, which keeps it from being overwhelming.

I think I was expecting a thick, sweet oud bruin (maybe Kasteel Rouge but dialed back). This was more like a Cantillon twin! (386 characters)

On draft at the original Pony Bar.

Keg was acting up, so they filled pitchers and poured 8oz tasters from that. HLT was slightly flatter than normal because of this, but the added creaminess was worth it. Tart and funky with subtle cherries, though its funkiness overpowered the other flavors.

HLT is a more aggressively "American" wild ale compared to their other Coolship beers, which often shoot for the traditional gueuze style. It seems Allagash can do no wrong these days. (480 characters)

Been seeing this around town lately and finally ran into it at Barcade for their Philly Beer Week Allagash event 2012.

Old HLT pours out in the glass a brownish red color with some dark amber tints. A dismal amount of off white foam graces the top forever, retaining, yet not clinging to the walls. Smell is tart cherry scent with some type sweet spice and some faint caramel. Very earthy with minimal funk, cherry forward. Tastes great, HLT is not a sour forward beer, it's more of a fruit beer with a mild twang with a brown ale base I suppose. It reminds me of a less bugged up version of Supplication, which aint a bad thing. This is some mighty tasty stuff if your not looking to bug up your stomach. Cherry flavor, minimal caramel, light bugs, brown ale, ta da. Feel is on the lighter side with carb throughout the 10oz's, it does not dwindle. I could go for this again. The alcohol is not present at all, that could be a problem, i could drink a bunch of this. (968 characters)

@ Milltown

Served a clear amber color with a small white head. Tart, airy clean, cherry aroma - only a trace of dry funk. Very interesting having this right after FV-13. It's tart and fruity, but the absence of a wood element is striking at first. Clean, smooth cherry flavor on a simple malt base. Easy-going, extremely drinkable, glossy, and crisp. Not terribly wild or acidic or anything, just pretty refreshing, mellow, and neat. (434 characters)

Poured on tap at When Pigs Fly. This one pours a muddy amber brown with a small cap of beige foam.

The aroma has a nice oak and cherry aroma with hints of vanilla. Woody aroma with a nice funky sour edge. Tart cherries and courants on the pallet with a sweet middle finishing out tart. Hints of vanilla and oak.

Nice light body with a little bit of a tannic finish with soft carbonation. Overall great stuff here. One doesn't really miss with an Allagash sour. (463 characters)

At first I worry, then a sigh of relief, there is the carbonation. Quick, fleeting. Just awful retention and no lacing. Rudy, reddish brown and translucent. The aroma is so subdued, but what is there is brett and cherry pie crust like. I also detect some washed rined cheese on the nose...nice.
Cherry pie, faint / light lactic twinge and some brett like hay. The washed rined cheese shows up again here but more prominent. The flavor is soft and very pleasant. Phenols, bretty phenols on the end. Prickly carbonation, not thin, but light, lemonaid like. While the component parts of this beer are not amazing by themselves put together they create a wonderful beer. To often we look for big flavors instead of nuance. Truly enjoyable. (736 characters)

First had: on tap at Teresa's, Wayne, PA

Poured a reddish-copper color, hazy, with a puff of fizzy tan-red head that quickly sank to a persistent ringlet. Aroma of ripe cherries, lactic and acetic, sugary malts. Similar to the nose, nice taste of sugary malts and cherry pie, lactic with slight twinges of acetic acid, with a notable yeastiness in the background. Medium body, smooth and gently carbonated, a bit tart, and some alcohol warmth. A nice beer, and very good for the style. (486 characters)

375ml bottle received in a trade with hoppymcgee. Thanks Greg! Poured into an Allagash stemmed glass.

A - The cork escapes with a huge pop and wisps of carbon dioxide. Pours a cloudy ruby tinted amber body. Lots of yeasty sediment floats and churns its way throughout the body riding bubbles of carbonation. A finger of thick and fizzy white head that shows surprisingly good staying power.

S - Quite funky on the nose, dirt, mushrooms/fungus, moldy, sour cherries, musty damp basement, a bit nutty.

T - Lightly tart and sour with cherry fruitiness front and center. Nutty, woody, a bit buttery and creamy, earthy. Not much for funk in the flavor. Some mild malt backing things up.

M - Lightish to medium in body with a strong and fizzy carbonation. Nice tart cherry fruitiness complements. Alcohol presence is practically undetectable.

O - Overall another enjoyable wild ale from Allagash. Lots of good fruit presence, interesting wood flavors, mild funk with mid-level tartness. Well integrated and balanced flavor profile. Another winner. (1,046 characters)

A: the appearance is right red with brown highlights, short white head, nice lacing and good retention

S: ripe cherries, heavy dose of bret, notes of funk, some raspberry

T: light waves of tartness Paired with candied cherry, slightly tart, a little sweet at the end

Mf: carbonation is mellow, body is slightly syrupy

O: decent oude bruin, not quite as sour as would be expected from the nose. Nice flavors, worth a try. (453 characters)

Big thanks goes out to sincereNc for sharing this one at a recent tasting! Served from growler into a Boulevard tulip. Poured a ruby red-orange with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, cherry, sour, tart, and subtle funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, tart cherry, sour, and tart. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. Everything going on in this one was really quite well balanced and enjoyable. All of the right flavors and aromas were there for the style without being overwhelming to the point where you couldn’t drink this in large quantities. I could probably drink this one all night long given the opportunity. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance. A definite must try. (854 characters)

750ml bottle into 3F stemware. Bottled in 11/11. Thanks a ton SneezyAchew!

A: Pours a fizzy iced-tea color with golden highlights. Bone white head is thin and quickly disappeared into a faint collar. Carbonation is very active, and a stream of bubbles shot to the surface until the glass was drained.
S: I get dominant notes of cherry pit tannins, cherry skin, lemon zest, musty earth and a touch of sweaty socks and brett.
T: Buttery and lightly tart notes of cherry skins and red fruits mixed with earthy, musty brett. The base beer is greasy and malty, and I wish the flavors were a tad drier and crisper. Sourness is toned down but nice.
M: Bubbly active carbonation but not frothy, greasy and smooth mouthfeel, not harsh, with a medium body.
O: A solid wild ale. I like them a little dryer but I would have no trouble drinking this again. Very mild tartness mixes well with solid red fruit flavors. Thanks again, Mike. (928 characters)

served from caged and corked bottle into a tulip.
appearance is a nice caramel rose type color that poured with a 2 inch head that dissipated quickly with little to no lacing throughout the glass.

the nose is slightly tart fermented cherries and vanilla with a touch of light vinegar.

the taste is heavy cherries and lightly acidic and tart but considerably mellow and easily quaffable. no hint of the ABV at all and no vinegar in the taste. it finishes nice and dry and clean with little aftertaste. drinks like a dry rose wine in a way with carbonation.

overall this is an easy drinker and not overly complex but does the cherries justice and allows them to come through nicely and shine throughout the beer. (713 characters)

On tap at Dupont Paradisio for James Brown Night of the Funk

A: murky amber-rose-yellow gradient, low transparency and almost no head. looks like a solid block of sienna. even the edges are not transparent enough to show a shadow, despite the overall lightness of hue

S: tart funk, more brett L than C, cherries, wheat malts, oak, grassy barnyard, delicate florals, low carbonation makes it difficult to draw smells out. what does make it out is nice though

T: lactic and pedio tart, tannic, then cherries. unmalted wheat, grainy almost as if there were oats, then lots more sour. slight bit of sulfur and banana left on the tongue afterwards. as it warms, more pepper, spice, and floral notes come out. not as subtle as supplication, but a very comparable flavor profile overall.

M: light-medium body, tannic almost astringent mouthfeel that finishes dry and dusty, the least likeable part of the beer

O: quite nice overall, but as far as cherry/kriek wild ales go, schaerse and supplication are far tastier, imo. it could use more barnyard stinky funk and less of the grapepeel dry funk. glad to have tasted, but also glad not to know that i'd rather not seek out a bottle. (1,181 characters)

This beer poured out as a nice clear brown color with a thin cream colored head on it. The smell of the beer was funky, with lots of tart smelling aromas coming off of it. The taste of the beer had flavors of sour cherries with wooden barrel aging all mixed together. The mouthfeel was decent in my opinion, it was smooth but a little on the lighter watery side. Overall this beer reminded me a lot of a wine in most cases. Glad I had it though. (445 characters)

A: pours a clear orange with a finger of white head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S: lots of sour and tart notes here--cherries, lemons, and a touch of vinegar. There are some sweeter bubblegum notes underneath.

T: very sour on the tongue, with lemons and cherries dominating with light acetic flavors. There are slight funky notes as well with a dry, tart finish.

M: medium-light body with medium carbonation, this beer could use a little more carbonation.

O: a good soir overall. Tart and very sour, but still refreshing. (541 characters)

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours an amber color with good head retention and lacing. On the nose, there is considerable sour funk, coupled with some noticeable vinegar. There seems to be some underlying fruit as well (maybe some blackberry or cherry), but it's hard to pick up with the brett aroma. The flavor profile replicates the nose, with this beer delivering a pretty impressive gueuze/lambic taste experience. The sour funk isn't overdone however, and I am picking up some noticeable fruit as well. Mouthfeel is fairly light, and frankly I would not have guessed I was drinking a 7% abv. beer. The finish is long, with some light tannic and considerasble sour funk (to no great surprise).

A nice enough beer, but just not my cup of tea. (750 characters)

Pours a murky light brown with a mild reddish tint. Thin light tan head that fades to a thin collar and transient lace. Mild oaky aroma, with vanilla and tart cherry notes; a very mild oud bruin. Flavor has a residual sourness throughout, but sorely lacking from not being aged in oak. Not as fruity as the nose but tart cherries hit the front of the palate as it warms. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, and a dry finish. Easy drinking but more fruit or more... something would make this great. (514 characters)

Reviewing the Old HLT from Allagash Brewing Company out of Maine.

2012 vintage bottle from the 03/31/12 release. Served in a snifter glass and enjoyed on 05/06/12 while waiting in line for Great Taste of Madison tickets at the Steve's on University. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Sunset orange color. A layer of fizzy off-white head at pour settles to ring around glass. Very hazy appearance. There is a lot of sediment floating around in the glass, which ultimately settles into a chunk at the bottom of the snifter. Minimal lacing, poor retention. 3.5/5

Smell: Sour cherries, vinegar, pears and juicy granny smith apples. More vinegar as the beer warms. 4/5

Taste: Lots of tart cherry and sweet vinegar. Touch of red grape. There is a a bit of "earthy wheat" flavor too. Musty aftertaste. A touch of stainless steel sweetness. I like the upfront flavor, but the finish is not as good. Mild pucker, no funk. 3.75/5

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, high carbonation. Fizzy, almost soda-like, mouthfeel. Finishes dry and a little sweet. 4/5

Overall: A solid non-funky "tart lemonade"-like sour, but nothing too unique or complex. Very drinkable and hidden ABV. This kind of tastes like a jolly rancher.

Recommendation: Worth drinking, but not worth going out of your way to find.

Pairings: Pound cake.

On-tap at Bad Apple. Served in a tulip.

A - A big white foam settles to a partial cap, thick collar, and fingers of lacing. Hazed dark orange body.

S - Lots of cherry and graham cracker and vanilla malt character - you can tell this was originally a brown ale. Lactic sourness and light cherry vinegar flavors emerge as the beer warms up.

T - Taste has a bit less complexity to it, with more overt lactic acidity that's a tad harsh as this approaches room temperature. Still, the main flavor components are sugary malt and sweet cherry.

M - Smooth, medium body, a hint of alcohol warmth, medium-low carbonation, and mild tartness and acidity.

D - You can really tell this was aged in stainless rather than oak - there's none of the tannic dryness I associated with barrel-aged sours. This is still very heavy on the base brown ale and cherry, with only mild wild character (particularly in the nose). I imagine this should improve over time, so perhaps I should look into snagging a bottle. (995 characters)

This beer pours a hazy amber with a thin head. The nose is a very subtle acetone with an almost syrupy, fruity undertone. The taste isn't much different with modest sourness and a sweet cherry aftertaste. Very sweet for a sour, but not cloying. There is also a nice burn on the back end. Overall it was a bit of a let down, but still tasty. (340 characters)

10 ounce pour - $6.00 at Leon’s Full Service in Decatur, Georgia as part of their Allagash Takeover event.

Appearance: Hazed, amber-esque body with a smallish, ivory-hued head fed by little streams of bubbles.

Smell: A moderate aroma of tartish whole cherries forward of the faintly sweet-scented, toasty malts and thin wafts of phenols.

Taste: Tastes of, well, cherries, as one might imagine. Some toasted bread and muddled caramel maltiness. Lightly sweet, lightly spicy. Brightly tart and with modest lactic touches popping up here and there. Drying, well-carbonated finish with lingering tart cherries accents.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: Old HLT is a likable cherry brew. I was going to liken it to a more lively carbonated Quelque Chose, but, it's been nearly eight long years since I last had it, and, with all the many brain cells I've outright killed since then, perhaps I should leave the comparison alone. (955 characters)

Just back from Novare Res. This is a brown ale aged on local tart cherries for 10 months. Description said this was the only keg in existence and was just a preview of what this beer will be. 8oz pour into an Allagash 25cl glass

A: Murky cherry red color that leaves a small fluffy white head. No lacing left on the glass

S: Faint aroma of cherries, sweet fruit and some yeast. Later on I picked up some spice and a hint of raspberries. Maybe the faintest hint of funk going on here. Nothing that sticks out

T: Fairly similar to the nose. Not overly tart, but leaves a bitterness on the tip of the tongue

M: Medium bodied with good carbonation. Very dry finish

D: I enjoyed this beer, but it was lacking some flavor. Nothing really jumped out at me, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the brewers have hinted this needs more time to ferment. Glad I could be one of the first to try this (899 characters)
