Poured into 3 oz tasting glasses at the Southern Maine Beer Drinkers Club August meeting, as a gift from Rob Tod and Jason Perkins.

A: slightly hazy, with the hue of fresh raspberries. very reminiscent of a rose petal.

S: fresh raspberries and barnyard, almost like standing half way between the raspberry patch and the horse stables on a hot summer day.

T: taking a sip of this beer is like picking a fresh raspberry, popping it in your mouth, and squishing it between your tongue and the roof of your mouth until the fruit dissolves. as the raspberry fades, the complexity of the wild yeasts comes into play.

M: stays beautifully in the mouth with a fruitiness and crispness, hangs on the tongue as the flavors unfold.

D: extremely drinkable. with every sip, my mouth began to salivate as a sign that my brain wanted more! i feel very lucky to have experienced this beer. i can only hope this is a sign of things to come from Rob and Jason.

This beer is my favorite american wild ale. It combines the complexity of a lambic-style sour with a fruited sour. The beer pours a perfect deep pink hue in the glass with a bit of foamy white head. The smell is quite tart with a bit of funk. You can smell fields but you can't distinctly pick up the raspberry on the nose. The taste is harmonious with a smooth pucking tartness that is well rounded. It tastes like a not quite ripe fresh picked raspberry. It's a beautiful beer. The mouthfeel is so smooth and properly carbed that it really elevates the base. This one and RR Beatification are at another level for american wild ales to me.

Did a 2/3/14 tour of the Allagash Brewery and was treated to a Coolship Red at the end - split a bottle 3 ways and was delighted with it. My first observation was the overall appearance - limited head but a beautiful clear ruby red color. Smell was distinctly fresh raspberries. Taste was great - not too sour or tarty, just enough funk to taste. Mouthfeel was what was expected - light to medium. My overall opinion is that this is a very drinkable and enjoyable beer for anytime - winter, summer, beach, mountains, etc. It's not over the top in any direction - which is what makes it right. Hope they bottle this one for broader distribution as I would definitely buy it again - in fact, they should create a mixed 4 pack with one of each variation - raspberry, cherry, Resurgam, etc. Thank you Allagash for this!

Coolship red pours a hazy pinkish-red into the glass with a tiny creamy head on top. The foam leaves some spots of lace on the glass between each sip.

The aroma is very funky. Cream cheese, tart cherries, oak, vanilla, raspberries, green apples. It's a very complex aroma.

Each sip of this medium bodied beer is dry and smooth with mild carbonation. The flavor is every bit complex as the aroma. Tart fruity flavors of raspberries blend nicely with oak, vanilla and hay/wheat. It finishes tart and dry with lingering raspberry flavor.

Definitely a sipper. Different flavors come through on each sip. Complex and drinkable, but maybe not for the sour beer newbie.

375 ml cork and caged bottle poured into a Bruery tulip.
5.7% ABV, Date bottled: 2/6/2012

Many thanks to Rochefort10NH for this bottle I never knew I wanted until it showed up at my door! :)

A - It's without surprise that Coolship Red pours, well, red. Bright red in fact, it's topped by a pastel pink head which, again without surprise, disappears almost instantly as the effervescent hissing subsides; a pretty good indicator that this beer will have quite a bit of acidity to it.

S - Coolship Red packs a wallop of freshly crushed raspberries which do their part to try and compete with the wild, funky aroma of this spontaneous beer. Barnyard horse blanket and damp straw emerge with a sharp acidic bite to the finish which bites at the sinuses with sourness for an exceptional aroma. Earthy oak finishes out, barely shining through the funky aroma.

T - An epic battle continues to rage between the bushel of fresh crushed raspberries and yeast funk that plays out to the flavor of every lambic-lover. Damp straw and wet rocks persistently push to the forefront of Coolship Red's flavor leaving some of the grittier spontaneous funk behind like horse blanket and goatiness.

M - Somebody turned the Sour Power knob to 11, cause this beer is ridiculous! The intense blend of tart raspberries and sour, biting acidic fermentation and earthy tannic oak combines for an aggressive feel that's elevated further by prickly carbonation and a light, crisp body. Give this a light swish in your mouth if you're looking for that lock-jaw intensity!

O - With ease that seems to come almost naturally, Allagash's Coolship Red rivals some of the classic Belgian lambics in straight up barrel aged funk and full, unadulterated fruit flavor. This is by far the best American-made lambic I've ever had and one of the sours out there, period.
