Coolship Resurgam is a blend of both old and young unfruited spontaneous beer. The name comes from the motto of our fair city, Portland, Me. It means "I shall rise again". Coolship Resurgam won a Silver medal at the 2010 GABF.

C&C 375ml bottle. Thanks to Rob for bringing this one out. Poured into an unlabeled snifter glass, 8/25/2013.

Pours a light golden-amber body with 2cm of white foamy head with great retention. Not much lacing. Appearance here is up there with all the other great geuzes.

Smells very lemon zesty, acidic citrusy with a bit of oakiness. Some earthy funk somewhere in the nose as well. Very refreshing, effervescent nose. Like a natural air freshener.

Follows the nose except the acidity and funk comes out more here; the distinct citrus flavours are now in the background. That's probably the way it should be. Its quite mouth-puckeringly sour, but not overwhelmingly so like Sour in the Rye or Beatification is.

Very refreshing, medium bodied and very well carbonated. Its got a lot of fizzly pep on it. Easy to drink, its unfortunate that we split a 375ml bottle between 5 people, really.

A great American geuze. It certainly rivals the Belgian geuzes in terms of the complexity of the nose and flavour as well as the excellent carbonation and mouthfeel. Allagash sours are probably the closest you can get to the Belgian styles of sours in America, and this beer reflects that fact.

375ml bottle into a 3 Fonteinen wine-style glass.

A: Lightly hazed light amber body under two fingers of dense white foam. Terrific retention for the style. Gorgeous Geuze.

S: Wonderfully aromatic, with a terrific balance of fresh, citrusy acidity (lime in particular) and grassy, floral funk. Each sniff yields a new element, with oak, tangerine, and rose petals all making appearances as it warms. Truly outstanding.

T: Sharply sour, with lemony acidity alongside floral brett and some mineral-heavy funkiness. The sourness never leaves, and really overwhelms everything else on the finish. I love sourness more than most, and as much as I'm enjoying this beer I'm actually sorry that its intense acidity drowns out much of the amazing complexity apparent in the aroma.

M: Lively, softly carbonation in a fairly light body. Really refreshing.

O: Wow, this is an amazing beer. It's distinctly better than the genuinely excellent '10/'11 Tilquin from earlier today, and is absolutely the equal of just about every traditional Belgian Geuze. Proof that the right bugs reside in more places than just the Senne valley, and I hope a harbinger of more great American Lambics to come.

At first sniff, we’re brought back to when we had our first sip of lambic. this is a new world of beer, and allagash took a huge leap into spontaneously fermented brews; certainly tastes like it was worth their time, too. A blend of one-, two- and three-year-old batches, resurgam is the rustic showpiece of what allagash can craft over time. Absolutely delicious.

LOOK: Hazed golden orange

SMELL: Medicinal phenols, lemon zest, pear, floral, green peppercorn

TASTE: Tart, acidic, lemon juice, herbal, phenols, dry, earthy, musty grain, vegetal, wood, tangy rhubarb

Wow, this was delicious!!!Extremely cheesy, as if it has been aged for 10 yrs. ...Incredible balance between sour and funk. Probably the best American Geuze i have ever had... Very similar to belgian geuze...

Shared bottle.

Pours a not particularly appealing looking hazy amber.

Aroma: Mild funkiness for style. Less off-putting than some others.

Flavor: Fruity and complex taste starts sweet and sour but turns tart and bitter by the finish. Quite tart mid-taste.

375 mL bottle poured into a wine glass.

Pours exceptionally fizzy and spritzy, but the head is quick to dissipate. What remains is a filmy lace over the body. The body reminds me of a Helles beer, blonde and golden with a bit of a malted hue, but still displaying superb clarity. 5

The smell is like funky peach my brain says. My brain also tells me that this aroma reminds me of some the great 3F beers I've had before. There's some earthiness, tartness, tanginess, and even a saline-like smell. Something suggest pineapple too. I will say though, the flavors here don't quite pop; I have to search a bit. 4.25

More tart and less funky than the nose and the peach/pineapple flower shines. Also getting some crisp apple type of flavor and a lingering earthiness and floral yeast flavor that is a nice exit. 4.5

As I must always point out: NO VINEGAR! Love it when a wild doesn't have that quality. This has a slight acidity and tartness and a bit of yeasty, floral funk. It drinks quite refreshingly with a bubbly intro that leads to a dryer, crisper finish. 4.25

Great stuff. Maybe not as clean as my favorite from 3F but still pretty exceptional in the wild world.

Thin head (1 ½ fingers), quickly dissipating to a thin bubbly line (appropriate for the style). Beer is a saison-like golden straw or lemon color, extremely cloudy, and just barely translucent at all. Very, very bubbly.

Sharp Brett, lemon, and wheat through the nose. Nice barnyard funk, very rustic.

Extremely sharp flavor, although not overly tart, that envelopes a slightly cheesier funkiness on all sides. Some lemony tartness, wheat, and more Brett. Super, super tasty.

Extremely crisp mouthfeel: very, very lively. Tastes like a lighter beer, but really is a pretty hefty feel, about medium-full. Thick and cloying. Great balance.

This is a fantastic beer. It has just enough tartness to come across as a Gueze, although it could easily pass for a Brett Saison. I don’t know quite what to say; it’s a fantastic beer, and makes an easy intro to the world of Lambics, Guezes, sours, or wild ales. Extremely drinkable, especially for the style.

By way of DantheMan. 2015 vintage. 375ml corked and caged bottle into Hill Farmstead stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a foamy, 1.5 finger white head with good retention. Beer is a clear goldenrod that reveals ample carbonation. Lacing is stringy and patchy with good stick. For a gueuze, this is really good.

Nose is surprisingly subdued. Hints of tart lemon, yeast, hay and a bit of woodiness. Smells good but its barely there.

Opens tart lemon zest, hay, oak and peat. Some woodiness in the middle is mixed with a light hop bitterness. Citrus and lemony tartness throughout with a light fruity sweetness towards the end. Finish is a touch bitter with a clean, woody aftertaste. I'm pretty impressed by this.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and lively in the mouth and goes down soft. Finish rather clean with a puckering, dry aftertaste. Solid.

For an American interpretation of the style, this is very good... if a bit young. The funk is present as is the wood and hay presence. However, there's a bit of bitterness that is still detracting from the experience. Given enough time, this'll get better and better.

I wish the Allagash Coolship series was a little more attainable - props to them for bringing open-air spontaneous fermentation to the US. Not sure if this is a textbook gueuze but it does at least maintain the spirit of blending old and new. VERY oak-forward, deep layers of tart funk - cheese, must and tons of very active bugs.

375 mL bottle dated 7/27/2011. Poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Gusher after popping the cork, but it doesn't produce much head when I pour it. Strange. Hazy and wispy.

Smell - Actually smells like a gueuze should. Very strong lactic acidity. Lemon. Strong wheat. A little pepper and some light funk.

Taste - Strong acidic citrus flavors of lemon. Really lemony. A little herbal with some strong hay flavors. Low funk again and a big pepper finish. Very sour.

Mouthfeel - Nicely effervescent. Nice sourness without being overpowering. Low carbonation.

Overall - As good as any American sour I've had. Not as good as the best Belgian counterparts, but fantastic for an American brewery to produce something so authentic tasting.

Bottled 7/27/2011. Bottle split 3 ways.

Light amber/hazy straw. Quick white head dissipates with a frothy fizz.

Aroma varies around the table from "sour" to "sweet tart".

Funky, bit of the barn, bit of citrus rind.

Mouthfeel is perfect, light, well carbed, crisp finish.

Overall this is is close to perfect. Really missing something in the aroma, and the taste has such faint notes from the oak that you notice it more for its absence.

Delicious.

Green corked and caged 12.7 oz bottle. 2015 batch. Sampled on May 1, 2015.

The pour is a milky orange-yellow color with a short-lived white foamy head. It eventually dissolves and leaves some lacing in the glass.

The green bottle already made me suspicious but this was a fresher batch acquired at the brewery and in some respects skunkiness and sour can go hand in hand. No skunk but plenty of sour, tart, overripe fruit characters. A little rain-soaked wood.

Medium to above medium body. Smooth and thick texture.

The taste is sour and tart but its intensity does not make me pucker up like some wild ales or sours can. This is one of my least favorite styles but Allagash found a way to balance it out.

2015:
Hazy brassy gold, initial burst of foam that settles quickly. Decent clarity.

Aromas of cheesy funk when the bottle is first opened, minerally and citrusy as it sits in the glass. Pretty much a dead ringer for a lambic.

Firmly tart and tannic, lemon, apricot skins, dry oaky aftertaste. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Overall very nice, easily one of the closest interpretations of Belgian lambic in the U.S.
2013:
Less carbonation, not much foam. Acidic and lemony aroma.
Taste is much more acidic and sour than the '15. Tannic and very dry aftertaste, lingering oak is present. A bit more mellow in feel but more acidic. Pretty nice stuff, I'd give the '15 the edge for it's complexity.

Pours clear medium straw with lots of bubbles. No head or lacing to speak of.

Aroma features loads of lemon and apple. A distinct funk with a little bleu cheese and yogurt.

Bracingly sour. Lemon and apple up front. Yogurt sweetness creeps in and finishes with extreme oak and very dry.

Medium mouthfeel with high carbonation.

Enjoyable beer, but fails to live up the standards of the Belgian lambic makers. I enjoy sourness, but this one was a touch over the top.

Hazy straw colored body that pours nearly flat.

Good funk and oak character on the nose, smells fairly authentic and lambic-like. Really heavy on the brett with a gentle lemon flesh acidity, along milder with yogurt-like lactic notes. The plastic character I pick up in the other coolships is surprisingly absent here.

Very barrel heavy and tannic on the palate. Sourness is reserved, but it's at an enjoyable level to me. A lot of earthy funk, grapefruit rind, lemon. Tastes a bit sweet upon first sip, but that disappears as the strong tannins build up on the palate. The body is nice and sturdy, and the finish has a great lingering oak presence.

Really impressive overall. It doesn't touch some of the better gueuze blends from Belgium, and it's not on the same level as Beatification at this point, but it's better than almost any American attempt at the style.

Bottled 7/27/11, bought at Allagash.

Pours a straw yellow color, hardly any head, no lacing at all, second pour produces a thin fizzy white head that fades wicked fast, yeast floaties enter the glass and make it quite hazy when the first pour was very clear.

Smell hits strong with a huge sour funk, good citrus elements, bit of a barnyard funk in the nose.

Taste has a nice sour tartness that tickles the sides of the tongue, a funk starts to work its way in the flavor profile before the sourness regains its foothold in my mouth, moderately soft carbonation, slightly earthy undertones.

A: Pours a clear light straw-gold with a decent white head.

S: Pleasantly heavy brett kicks things off in the nose. Horsey, game, light cherry-like acetic note, a bit of mineral and sweet wheat.

T: The taste brings more brett, but it's not as dominant as in the nose. Pineapple, lemon and earthy mineral, light lacto acidity, apricot skin, dry oak, vanilla. It's got a bit of a hard water taste to it.

M: Light-bodied feel. The carbonation is more than slight but fades quickly.

O: This is really nice. Certainly my favorite American spontaneous blend so far, much far ahead of Beatification and Sour Reserve.

Golden pour; small white head. Looks authentic.

Quite a bit of dirty Hanssens-like funk. Almost straight barnyard, horse shit included. Other scents of pineapple, cantaloupe, and honey dew melon.

A leafy/green funk flavor. Definitely dirty/earthy. Lemon acidity and apple tartness. Wonderful american representation of a traditional beer. It isn't quite the same. This bottled release was earthier than what I've had before.

Notes from mid. 2012. Got a full De Ranke tasting glass of this one, during the finish of the first day of the Italian Beer Festival // 37.5 ml bottle bottled on 25/5/2011 // making it slightly over 1 yr old // pours a hazy golden with a sizable head for the style that has some nice lacing going on // aroma is instantly gauze, I didn’t know what to expect from a real American geuze, honestly & peraps nationalistically, I expected it to be ok but weaker than the best Belgian counterparts because I believed that the factory had to become saturated y the critters over a long period of time, man was I wrong, smell is delicious, strongly tart, I am getting lots of horse blanket here, brett, touch lambic yeast & hint of pungent citrus // strong farmhouse, barnyard, tartness going on here in the beginning, touch wood, citrus, strongly tart lemon peel, touch heavier in the finish coming into play, hint of wood, quite horse blanket heavy I a lovely way, going into definitely more acidic territory in the back than Belgian counterparts, the initial flavours get complimenting, resulting in a nice complexity with strong acidity & a dash of what is getting already quite close to vinegar, maybe dash of apple vinegar, not so much the fruit but a mellowness that encompasses the vinegar, just as with apple vinegar compared to regular one, heavily acidic, brief moment in the end of bitterness, quite interesting, makes me think a bit of a small instance of bitter herbal / farmhouse hops // touch dry & lightly fizzy, touch 3F style in that department, easy going, makes you want to drink more // outstanding, lots of interesting flavours & component, some touch newer to me, on part with the stuff that we make here which may not be that special anymore if the states are filled with this kind of stuff.

Allagash Coolship Resurgam 06/21/2012

A- Golden bodied pour to a tulip with a small white head that falls fairly quickly. Fairly hazy appearance as the head dies to absolutely nothing. Lacing is not going to happen.

S- Reminds me of 3F and Cantillon Gueuze in a way. Funky and sour nose reminds me of the most authentic Gueuze. Dusty, sour, oak, lemons and barnyard.

T- Again, it brings back memories of the best Gueuzes I have had. The sours are high but not puckering like Cantillon or Hanssens can be. Lemon zest, barnyard funk, mineral water, stone fruit, oak, white grapes, pear/apple, slight tannins, some acetic and horsey funk. Cheesy cheddar.

MF- Dried out light end body as any Gueuze should have, the consistency is pretty much spot on. Carbonation is at a fairly high level and with each sip it foams up quite a bit. Finishes with tart acid lingering on the palate.

I have to remind myself to get a few bottles next time. I was somewhat strapped for cash when I got this bottle but this is at least on-par with the great Gueuze I have had. Tons of flavor and complexity with a great sourness.

Served in an Allagash tumbler. Nose is pretty cheesy and funky. Light acidity. Mild skunk. Quite authentic. Super dry. One of the best American sours. Bit too skunky. This was extremely promising, and I really am looking forward to seeing what Allagash can do with this beer going into the future. I have very high hopes for what batches 10 and beyond could be...

Very light fizzy head fades instantly, hazy golden orange wheat yellow color.

Nose nice light lambic like tart soured malt and funk, light funk, hint of tart lemony, light bready malts and wild funk.

Taste sour, tart, sour malts, bready malts, nice sour lactic, light tart lemony, nice funk, wild horsehair funk, dry, light lemon tort. Finish is dry long tart finish, lemony, light funk, etc.

Mouth is med To lighter bodied, light carb.

Overall amazing, tasty, nice sour and tart flavors, nice funk and bready malts.

Vintage: 5/25/2011. Not sure where I got this bottle from, but somehow I have it.

Poured into a Coolship glass, surprising clarity, Champagne-like bubbles feeding a cap of foamy white head that started at about an inch and sank to a thin layer; minor dots of lacing on the glass. Got cloudy as some of the bottom-dwelling yeast made its way into the glass in the second half of the pour. Fruity aroma, citrus and stone fruits, light acid, grassy funk, candi sugar. In the taste, candied grapefruit, wet grass, earth, oak, mild moldy horseblanket, light acidic tartness, and some bready yeast. Maybe a little less tart and a little more sweet than your typical, authentic, Belgian gueuze, but it worked well nonetheless. Drinking very good for 3 years old. Light-medium body, easy drinkability, with a crisp mouthfeel. Nice overall.
