Notes/Commercial Description:
Our interpretation of a traditional Belgian wheat beer. Brewed with a generous portion of wheat and spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel, this beer is fruity, refreshing and slightly cloudy in appearance.

Small bottle from 4-pack (TJs), fresh (<30 days) into a tasting glass (three pours).

Pours pale yellow, cloudy, just as expected from a Wit. Head a bit smaller than expected, moderate lacing, good retention.

Aroma of yeast and sweet citrus. Faint spice notes, not enough to differentiate. Nice flowery composition, but I expected a bit more complexity.

The classic Belgian yeast flavor strikes the first note, but this is followed by somewhat steely/briny taste of European mineral water with a hint of green banana (not unfavorably compared to Loire Valley Muscadet wine) that remains for the whole glass, but does not stay in the finish. Followed by a rise of candied orange peel and clove notes. Moderate sweetness, but light malty finish with a hint of coriander and mint. Complex and balanced over all, and refreshing on a hot day, but the mineral notes are a bit too strong for the style.

Mouthfeel somewhat uneven. Fairly light-bodied, similar to classic wits, but carbonation seems stronger than usual, with fairly large, popping bubble structure (that is, you taste bubbles on the tongue rather than pin-pricks). Not quite what I wanted. Alcohol mild enough not to be noticed, so good balance aside from carbonation.

Overall a very decent, well made beer that deviates from the style in important points. Good, but not the best Allaghash has to offer. Would be excellent with seafood, especially mild white-fleshed fish and mollusks (mussels, clams). A particular hit with oysters and snails. It would easily pass muster with a classic seafood platter in Brussels.

But this beer presents a dilemma. It's not distinctive enough to be "special" and too expensive to be "everyday". Hence the scores--they might have been a bit higher in isolation, but not when compared to other representatives of the style. I would prefer more yeast-forward variants and more subtle carbonation. But the mineral qualities make it particularly suitable for pairing with seafood (perhaps made with Maine lobster in mind).

I've been digging the Wits lately, and this was no exception:

A: Pours a cloudy straw color with a wonderful amount of a frothy white head.

S: Bready and fruity, a fair amount of spice to it, very very pleasant.

T: A little tart, citric and spicy. Coriander is rather noticeable, it's very very good for the style, a nice balance.

M: Pretty ideal mouthfeel, low to moderate carbonation.

D: Very drinkable, a great example of the style, probably the best I've had.

Review written from notes. Enjoyed it at Brick Store Pub in Decatur, GA.

A--Straw colored. The unfiltered nature leaves it with a golden haze. Small white head that dissipated quickly. There was no lacing on the glass.

S--Lemon, coriander, spice, orange peel. This has a very wonderful, sweet smell to it.

T--Watery lemon with a sweet orange aftertaste. The coriander is very pronounced.

M--Light body with a watery taste. The heavy carbonation from the beer is very pronounced.

O--A great example of the style, but a bit too much watery for my liking.

On Tap in a pint glass.

Appearance: Hazy golden color with a 1-inch head that settles fairly slowly. Leaves a solid web of fine lacing down the entire glass.

Smell: This beer smells of wheat and citrus, especially orange and a hint of lemon.

Taste: An absolute delight--the best tasting witbier I have had. Tastes of wheat, citrus, pine, and a hint of spice. The beer closes with a dry, super crisp finish. This would be the perfect choice if looking for a superbly refreshing beer on a warm day.

Mouthfeel: Extremely drinkable, well-carbonated, light-bodied, smooth and delicious.

Overall: An exceptional tasting witbier that deserves the high rating it has. Delicious beer that I plan to have whenever I can get access to it again.

Appearance: Cloudy lemon colored body with a soft, creamy white head that settled quickly. Speckled lace all the way down my glass.

Smell: Orange/lemon nose. Spicy, too. Wonderful yeasty/bready notes that fought past my allergies. Heck, this seems to be helping them.

Taste: More citrus, and the peppery, spicy flavors really shine through. Thirsty citrus-peel bitterness that draws my cheeks in and prepares me for the next sip. Creamy mouthfeel with a nice drying finish.

A - 12 oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass. pale straw in color. there is a murky fusion from when the last of the yeast was poured in. very tall head, about 3 fingers of pure white fluff. eventually dissolves to a thin rim around the top, which stays for the rest of the drink. there's also some really nice web like lacing.

S - wow, very strong aroma. a fresh mix of citrus, wheat, bitter hops, bready yeast and some spice. slightly sour.

T/M - starts off with some strong malts and citrus, the citrus is consistent from the the front to back. the back end is spicy and almost dry with a little hint of bitter hops. it finishes clean and refreshing, but also slightly watery. there's no alcohol presence which is expected at 5.2% ABV. the mouthfeel reminds me of pulp-less orange juice. light bodied with some minimal carbonation.

Overall this is a great representation of a traditional witbier. Very light, refreshing and easy to drink. I would like to enjoy this again on a warm day.
