On tap at the gasharoo

Noted as brewed in 2008 with pumpkin and pumpkin seeds but no spice. Aged in chardonnay barrels

It is a deep amber red color with a generous head that remains.

The aroma is very potent. I could smell it when the bar tender put it down. Sour black cherries with a sweetness from the malt very nice

Very nice the sour taste is upfront.with the ca4rbonation. There is an earthiness that comes through and reveals the oak taste. The sour melds into a slight chardonnay wine taste with a crisp finish. Very nice

Single bottle from a recent tasting, courtesy of daryk77 - thanks man! The date was on the bottle, I just didn't happen to write it down.

Poured into a snifter. Light pumpkin hazy orange, with an eddy of white head that wraps the beer in a thin ring. Some retention on this.

Nose is an unmistakable sour ale, with good funk, musk, lactic acid, citrus. There is a mild sweetness lingering in the back, but I doubt I would have recognized this as pumpkin if I hadn't read it on the bottle.

This is a great sour ale to be sure, but where's the pumpkin? The sour base is quality - puckery sour, loads of lactic and funky goodness - but that sweet pumpkin counter just wasn't there.

For a brew that pushed the pumpkin content so, I was quite let down by this lacking. I guess I had something more specific in mind that just wasn't there. Perhaps what I got was precisely what the seeds and oak were going to add to this brew. If that is the case, then, the combination didn't really add anything to the complexion for me. Not a bad beer at all, just not what I was looking for.

On cask at NotF poured into a sampling glass. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a very small white head thy fades fast. Nose is a bit of that pumpkin flavor but it's not over the top, it's mellow.

Taste does have some pumpkin sweetness to it but it's not super strong. It's got a nice funky bite to it but it's really mellowed by the pumpkin. Mouthfeel is light and slightly sweet, with a creamy finish, very unique.

Review from notes. Thanks to Jay and Paul for bringing it to Evo.

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden/brown color with a very small tan head with little lacing.

S: Reminds me of pumpkin seeds actually, some pumpkin spice, with cinnamon and nutmeg, a little bit of molasses, and a little bit of funk.

T: More pumpkin, not as much spice as the aroma, but definitely there. A little bit of barnyard funk, and slightly sour. Very earthy.

M: Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. In terms of sour/tartness, on the lower side.

O: A nice wild ale, not overly sour, but I think that works well with the flavors in this beer, the pumpkin and spices.

Corked and caged 375ml bottle poured into a Cantillon tulip. Shared by schen9303.

Pour yields a .5 finger creamy off-white head with decent retention. Beer is a semi-clear orange-bronze. Lacing is stringy and with good cling. Good looking beer.

Nose is exceedingly tart. Pumpkin is noticeable but is not spicy or sweet but rather creamy and spritzy. Some roasted pumpkin seeds are noticeable also. A bit strange but really good.

Opens tart cobweb, lemon, wet wood, and roasted pumpkin seeds. Brett, spice, and the slightest bit of residual sweetness in the back. Reminds me of a gueuze. Almost a total lack of fruit character, just sour. Finishes lemon tart with the same, lingering sour aftertaste. Surprisingly good.

Light bodied with moderate to low carbonation. Smooth and silky in the mouth and goes down warm with a touch of spice at the end. Finish is accented and dry with a lingering, filmy aftertaste. Nice.

To be honest, I'm really surprised by how good this one is. The description as a pumpkin sour really threw me off but this one turned out very well. Balanced tartness with a great, smooth mouthfeel and a nose that's exactly what I'm expecting. Eager to see how time will treat this one.

Had during Brewvival 2012! Served from tap into a Brewvival sampler imperial pint. Poured red-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, funk, earth, tart, sour, and cherry. The flavor was of sweet malt, funk, earth, tart, sour, and fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with heavy carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. If I am honest, this one fell a little short of what I was hoping it would be. While really good, it just felt like the flavors were a little diluted to me. Didn't kill the beer at all, but definitely held it back from the full experience. I actually enjoyed the Mattina Rossa more. Still a solid brew from Allagash that I suggest any fan of the sours tries at least once.

A big thanks to caguiar for this beer. Shared with fellow BA’s in line at the FFF Anniversary Party.

Appearance – A hazy semi-brown/orange color with about an inch of tan head that dissipates at a moderate pace leaving slight lacing.

Smell – Pumpkin spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon mixed with actual pumpkin. Slight oak and barnyard funk; brett and wet hay.

Taste – More pumpkin flavor than I was expecting, and also less tart. The pumpkin flavor is somewhat muted though (you can taste it – just not really pick out specific flavors/spices or what not). The funk is also subdued. There is more of an earthy barnyard quality than funk and tartness.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, lower carbonation.

Overall – A bit disappointed to be honest. I don’t know why but I was hoping this would be somewhat similar to Ichabod 2009. Very easy to drink, just odd that all the flavors were “muted” in a sense. Very curious to see what age will do to my other bottle.
