Midnight Brett is chocolate brown in color, brewed with 2-Row, Midnight wheat, raw wheat and rye malt. It was hopped with a blend of Perle, Glacier and Simcoe hops. The beer was fermented with our house strain of Brettanomyces in stainless tanks. The finished beer has the aroma and flavor of fresh berries, sour cherries and a slight roasted character. The finish is pleasantly tart and fruity making this beer very drinkable.

A nice-looking beer. In a teku glass the beer was a dark brown, nearly black, color. The tan head was a bit sticky and lasted to the end of the glass.

Sweet fruit and sour cherry aroma. Some roasted malt.

Nice taste. Berries, sour cherries. A little bit of chocolate and a little bit of funk.

It's alternately sweet and sour. A beer to savor.

Appearance: brown in color, 1/4 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: chocolate, dark fruits, and sour mix

Taste: dark and sweet milk chocolate, lots of balck cherries, light blueberry, and sour mix

Mouthfeel: sour with a slightly sweet start and a dry semi-bitter finish, moderate carbonation, light bodied

Drinkability: Really enjoyed the sour cherry and dark chocolate combination. Glad I was able to find this on draft. I would certainly pick this up again. One of my new favorite beers from a brewery that I like.

Super carbonated pour: three finger creamy tan and bubbly head. Brew is extremely dark, solid black but thin-appearing. Lacing is good. A lot of yeast stays behind in the bottle.

You can smell tartness and funkiness as soon as you pop the cork, and it only intensifies as you pour. The Brett comes across as a hay or barn funk lemon sharpness. Darker fruit is present behind, with soft cherries, red grapes, and prunes. Sweet and tart. Not subtle, but complex and balanced.

Flavor is delicate in all respects, and follows the nose in different degrees. Rye and wheat also make their presence known, mostly on the back end. Cherries and prunes are balanced against light funk with an impression of mild aged cheddar. A bit of wood comes through. Beer has some bitterness, but if the hops are represented in the flavor profile, it's only in a dry, grassy sense.

Medium to medium-light body, with a nice lingering effect, and a cleansing dryness on the back end. Almost no sting, but it doesn't come across the slightest bit flat.

This is an impressively complex and tasty wild ale. If anything, I expected more tartness, especially from the aroma. This is really a wonderful beer, and I wish there were more of it to go around.

375ml corked and caged bottle into Hill Farmstead stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a frothy 1.5 finger brown-gray head with good retention. Beer is coke colored. Lacing is thick and layered with great stick. An awesome looking beer.

Nose is a slightly sweet ash, chocolate, cocoa, sweet red fruit and a mild roast. A bit of woodiness too. Nice and subtle but very well balanced.

Opens chocolate, cocoa and roasted malt. Sweet and slightly tart red fruit in the middle mixed with smoked malt, more chocolate and coca cola. Ends slightly coarse and tart with a roasty, sweet aftertaste. Pretty good.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and lively in the mouth and goes down frothy and foamy. Finishes messy with a filmy, sticky aftertaste. Pretty nice.

I'm not usually a big fan of dark sours but this is surprisingly enjoyable. The slight Brett presence works well with the sweet and roasty flavors present in the base. Worth a try!

Killer- thanks to Suzanne at the blind tiger! Pours a dark mahogany color with two fingers of head, good retention, barely any lacing.

Smells awesome- lots of Brett funk, not too sour, a little chocolate.

Tastes awesome too- same kinda thing going on. Malt up front, followed quickly by Brett funk, then a lingering funk mixed with roasted malt and chocolate.

Medium bodied full carbonation. This is a keeper. Get it if you can!

Appearance - Brown body. Big tan head. Lots of surface wisps and a thick collar.

Smell - Very bretty. Lots of toasted malts. Chocolate. A little bit of sour dark fruits.

Taste - More sour dark fruits. Toasted wheat and nutty malts. Earthy bretty bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium high carbonation. Medium body. Not really sour.

Overall - Decent beer that has some very tasty moments. The flavors tend to clash a little bit, though.

Had during Brewvival 2013! Served from tap into a Brewvival sampler shaker. Poured a massively dark brown (almost black) with a minimal tan head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark fruit, wood, and funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, big funk, dark fruit, wood, earth, and subtle dark chocolate. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. I will come out and say it right out of the gate. I’m not the biggest fan of soured/funked stouts, etc. However I do mind giving them a try. This one was one I’m glad that I gave a shot. The funk on this one was definitely the dominate factor going on here with some of the notes from the base brew taking a backseat. The brett didn’t really add any balance to the brew which is what hurt my flavor score on this one slightly, but it was still a brew that I’m glad I got the chance to try and wouldn’t mind doing so in the future again.

Poured from 500 ml bottle into snifter.

A: Pours a purple tinted deep brown with generous 3 finger creamy white head that lasts a good while and leaves several chunks of lacing.

S: Tart cherries, plums, and a bit of brett funk. There is a lingering note that almost a reads smoky to me.

T: Nice tart dark fruits up front. Cherry, plum, and raisins. Just a faint touch of roasted malts and unsweetened cocoa powder.

M: Medium body and nicely carbonated. Finish is just a touch sour, but very well balanced.

O: Enjoyed this one quite a bit. Lots of fruity notes and not overly sour. Not something I want to drink everyday, but a very nice departure from the norm.

Served in a small tasting goblet, quick review from notes.

Brownish black color with a mahogany highlight around the edges. Tan foam with lasting coverage and a little spotty lace.

Mellow Brett presence in the aroma, and mild roast malt.

Taste has a mellow tartness to it, dark woody malt, dry lingering mst aftertaste of musty Brett yeast. Medium bodied, fairly drinkable. Overall it was nice to try, but not something I'd revisit personally.

Poured from a 375 mL bottle into a BA goblet. Moderate hand. Date bottled: Oct. 16, 2013.

A: Very dark red-brown. Essentially black viewed straight-on. 1/2 finger of off-white head. Ok retention. Light lacing.

S: Equal parts earthy funk and lactic/citric acid sourness. Darker notes of roasted malt. Trace cacao. Dark fruit, cherry. Minimal acetic acid. Licorice.

T: Roasted malt intermingled with musty brett and a relatively light tartness. Dry finish. No significant alcohol presence. Lightly metallic in the aftertaste, but overpowered by a tasty combination of dark fruit, smoky malt and lingering tang.

M: High carbonation with moderate-light body. Bit prickly early on, but smooths out nicely as it goes.

O: Very nice, well-integrated brett elements coupled with roasted malt makes for an interesting and rather delicious brew. Glad I picked up a second one to get a bit of age on!

Poured on tap into a tulip glass.

Super dark red body, hinting towards black. Foamy cap of mocha tan white, with a collar to match. Noticeable small carbonation.

Nose smells sweet fruit dominant. Welch's grape juice, mild little funk, good balance of sweetnees and funky character.

Sharp mild fruit sweetnees, good brett and funk mid palate almost with a nice woody roast character. Smooth wet feel, with moderate carbonation. Juicy quality slightly a bit, with grape and hints of dark red fruit, raspberries, cherry and so forth, mild pepper.

Real neat fun beer, like this sweet light fruit and brett mix.

Pours a dark, deep black, with a half inch head, and not a whole lot of lacing.

Smells like dark malt, some chocolate, and juicy sour cherries.

The cherry flavor in this one is really unexpected, but really quite tasty. The roasted malt gives off a chocolate flavor that really brings to mind chocolate covered cherries. This is mildly sour- the dark malt tampers a lot of it.

This one has a deceivingly light body, with a low amount of carbonation, and a crisp tart mouthfeel. I expected it to be slightly creamy, given the look, but it's not, which is cool.

The first dark sour I've really liked, maybe I'll actually like sour stouts someday.

Very dark brown with a soft-looking, beige head. Smells different than I expected...Brett, tart, juicy berries, grapes, and leather. No roasted malt character to speak of. Flavors are similar with Brett, more dark fruits like blackberries, grapes, and plums, and some very light phenolics in the back. Fluffy, tart, medium body. Drinks lighter than its strength. Another tasty beverage from Allagash.

A: dark brown-black, essentially opaque body; two fingers of tan foam head left some lacing down the glass

S: roasted berry and dark earth, hints of brett funk slipping through

T: subdued currents of dark, tart black cherry, and smooth roasty but toasty grains - this beer drinks like a mellow IPA - the dark malts weave some voodoo magic on the palate - super-smooth integration of diverse malts and hops, tweaked with a subtle tart berry flavor; modest funky notes of brett's work in the beer round out the taste and tie all the elements together

M: full yet light-medium body, smooth and slippery, super easy to drink, soft and soothing

O: this was a fantastic drink, full of flavors and feels that will satisfy most BAs - part wild ale, dark ale, and pale ale, with a great malt bill including rye, wheat, and barley, and an assembly of complementary hops. I don't know what wild ale fans expect, but I thought this a beer particularly worthy of even non-wild ale fans' attention, as it was (IMO) a style-transcendent beer. Probably be too limited to get out there to everyone, so don't pass up on a bottle if you see it.

Appearance: Dark, dark brown - not exactly midnight black, but definitely rich - pours with a large, light tan head, retains a small cap, leaves some nice streaks and spots of lacing

Smell: Dark brown and chocolate malts with a nice amount of funk - brown and chocolate malts, with some roasted, lightly burnt malts - some funk, doesn't really scream Brett, but it's definitely in here - some musty, damp sourness, works well with the chocolate malts - some dark and stone fruits as well

Taste: Dark brown, caramel, and chocolate malts with some light sourness and funk - chocolate malts and some caramel grains - light malty sweetness - some light Brett notes with some wet funk - some stone fruit and dark berry skins - a bit leathery and phenolic

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nice carbonation, smooth, dry finish

Overall: Probably more refined than 2am Brett

This has some decent Brett funk with a nice base of chocolate and caramel. I don't think that the flavors really merge as well as they could, but this is definitely good. I have another bottle aging, and I'm curious what will happen in a few years.

On-tap at Alewife, Long Island City, NY

A: The beer is nearly black in color—dark red is visible near the bottom of the glass when it is held up to a light. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving lacing on the surface, a collar around the edge and lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of dark, sour cherries are present in the nose.
T: The taste is a little sour and has flavors of black cherries but there are also strong notes of dark malts. The sour cherry flavors linger through the finish.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a lot to moderate amount of carbonation. Faint bits of tartness are noticeable.
O: You wouldn't expect this to be a wild ale from its appearance, but it has a nice amount of sourness that's not overpowering and interesting contrasting flavors of dark malts.

Pours a dark brown color with a good sized light tan head, fades at a really slow rate which is quite surprising for a wild, although the color of the beer is also pretty unique for a wild ale,

Smell has a musty woody aroma which is odd since it's not barrel aged, only a slight hint of tartness on the nose, some fruity aromas mingle with a fairly roasted malt backing.

Taste is quite subdued based on that there's so much trying for attention, at first it's very roasted malt heavy, a subtle tartness tries to sneak in but leaves quickly, some fruitiness lingers around near the end but also leaves as quickly as it's found, carbonation is high with the body seeming a bit too thin.

The sour tartness just isn't strong enough, then again not all American Wild Ales are necessarily sours but for those looking for a sour ale will sorely be disappointed, so check your expectations.

The beer pours a fairly creamy and vigorous light tan head that does not dissipate quickly and appears to last quite a while. The beer itself is a dark black with hints of dark, ruby red that adds a nice shade to the black. The smell is very good and certainly worth writing about. The beer has a strong funk (tart) smell from the Brett in addition to hops, a bit of the roast, all of which to form a cherry smell when it warms up. Some of the raw wheat gets through and combines well with the Brett but easily gets lost if you are not looking for the wheat. The roasted character also comes out a bit to make the combined smell similar to berry. The hops do not seem to be very present if at all. The taste is a bit different from the smell but still similar in some respects. The funk is still the strongest flavor but is less sharp than it is in the smell. Rather, the funk (tartness) seems to mix with the other flavors and comes out a similar flavor to cherries. The light roast also makes an appearance and the hops are make an appearance in the aftertaste. The beer feels bubbly and smooth but not crisp, which makes it an easy but unique drink. Overall, a very good beer and one that I will get again if I can swallow the price tag.

Dark with minimal head that quickly fades. Smells like earth, tart berries, and a tiny bit of funk. Tastes of subtle blackberries, peach, and bandaid funk; very drinkable. Creamy mouthfeel. Overall not the best small bottle from allagash, but quite enjoyable.

Man, I had this on draft at an Allagash event last year and remember liking it quite a bit. I decided to try a bottle since the price was dropped to $6.99, and it just wasn't the same. It had a roasty, bitter character that was sort up unpleasant. The tartness was minimal and the beer just didn't seem as lively as it was fresh. I just don't feel like the roasty bitterness from the malts and slight tang from the brett worked very well together. It isn't terrible, bu this is the only miss I've had from Allagash's corked and caged wild series.

Smell has some mild funk an cherry smell. Taste is solid but lacking an sour or sweet qualities. Still outstanding though.

Third time having this brew. Finally opening my own bottle.

A- Poured to a few goblets with a black body but a thinner appearing body. Fizzy light tan head up to about a finger with a foamy texture. Retention is pretty good. Spotty lacing and some nice legs.

S- Fruity brett character with some signature cherry pie and barnyard funk along with a slight hint of band aid. Tiny amount of roast character but overall the aroma is surprisingly tame. Some citrus and stone fruit.

T- After a few sips the dry, dark roasted and toast grains open up to basically balance the Brett half and half. Yeast side of things provides cherry pie, stone fruit pith, lemon citrus and dry straw.

MF- Fairly light body but some thickness remains compared to other AWAs, a slight creamy silky texture. Carbonation at a moderate level providing some foamy, crispness.

Good Brett character without being overly funky or unbalanced. The dark malts provide nice flavors but overall the beer is fairly relaxed and just smooth.

A- Dark amber to black color.
S-Funky breadiness from the brett and smoked ham. Toffee if I really try.
T-Disappointingly mediocre. I almost feel like I'm drinking an amber beer that tastes like smoked ham and finishes with bread.

Appearance: pours an opaque medium black bodied beer. Large dirty off white head that is easily 3 fingers tall and is composed of creamy and dense bubbles. Heavy lacing is left on the side of the glass and the beer slowly drops down to a thin cap. Pretty long lasting head; good head retention for this beer. Really nice looking beer just like most of the other allagash beers.

Smell: light roast and hint of sweetness. Earthy, oaky, and funky. Fruity and leathery brett notes.

Taste: The beers starts off with a light tartness and an earthy oak barrel, hints of light roasty malt mix in there as well. Light funk combines with semisweet chocolates. Vinous and earthy flavors comtinue to unfold in this beer around mid drink. The funk starts to show itself more now. Earthy, musty rotten hay, and leathery funk flavors. Acetic flavors begin to build towards the end of the beer, building up from being tart to becoming slightly sour. A general fruitiness encompasses the beer and more chocolate flavor shows up as this beer warms up and opens up. Lots of complex flavors here, really nice. It seems like each sip has a different character about it. Allagash showing some serious finesse with barrel aging here.

Mouthfeel: light end of a medium bodied beer with carbonation that is at a moderate level. The carbonation is pretty creamy and not much for dry characteristics of this beer, but there is a slight dryness in the finish of the beer. Very drinkable beer. Drinks like it is a 5% abv sour beer, but surprisingly enough it clocks in at 7.3% abv.

Overall: This is a pretty nice beer by Allagash! Very different and interesting. I cant say that I would call this a soured stout, but it is defiantely a dark beer with brett. Perhaps it could be considered a combination of a black saison, a wild ale, and a mellow porter. As always... Allagash delivers an awesome looking beer, with nice complexity from the flavor profile, and a great mouthfeel to boot. Should I just move to Portland Maine to be closer to the source of so many great wild ales?
