Notes/Commercial Description:
Midnight Brett is chocolate brown in color, brewed with 2-Row, Midnight wheat, raw wheat and rye malt. It was hopped with a blend of Perle, Glacier and Simcoe hops. The beer was fermented with our house strain of Brettanomyces in stainless tanks. The finished beer has the aroma and flavor of fresh berries, sour cherries and a slight roasted character. The finish is pleasantly tart and fruity making this beer very drinkable.

375ml C&C bottle poured into an Allagash stemmed glass.

A - Pours a dark brown/near blackish color with a thick, several finger cap of grayish tan foam that is super dense and shows neverending staying power. After the shape holding cap of foam finally dissipates a bit, tons of thick foamy lacing is left on the glass.

S - Mildly tart and sour up front, loads of fruity berry aromas, sour cherries, mildly earthy funk, a bit of sweet tarts.

T - Nice hop bitterness that wasn't evident in the aroma gives the first impression on the tongue. Tartness is extremely mild...almost disappears. Earthy, medicinally bitter brett character kicks in nicely, traces of phenolics, light roast, fairly dry overall.

M - Fairly light in body, thin but not watery with a mild carbonation that edges on the foamy side. Phenolic, faintly tart, earthy, medicinal...

O - Interesting, a bit different, but just ok overall. Not one of my favorite Allagash offerings - I guess they all can't be winners, but they have a pretty good track record with me. This one is fine, but I won't run out to grab the stragglers left on the shelves either.

Thanks to angrybabboon for sharing the bottle.

Appearance: Dark dark brown almost black. Head is a loose creamy khaki. Nice streaks of lacing. A bit bubbly on the pour.

Smell: Soft layers of Brett funk. A bit earthy with some damp musty elements. A touch tart with a mild almost lactic element. Sweet roasted malts. Hints of dark chocolate, coffee bean, and cocoa. Caramel malt sweetness. A touch medicinal with a phenolic element. Some bready sweetness.

Taste: Mildly roasted malt. A touch of chocolate malt coupled with cocoa and some coffee bean thrown in. Brett adds some soft funk with a mild tart edge. Some earthy and damp yeast. Super clean for Allagash thanks to the stainless steel. The missing oak is noticeable. A touch of lemon thrown in the back.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body with a moderate carbonation. A touch crisp with a clean, super clean for Allagash, finish.

Overall: Deep dusk.

Roasted and mildly bretty. Soft and mild for Allagash. The oak would have helped.

Split with Goblinmunkey7

Consumed 7/4/14

Appearance: Dark, dark brown - not exactly midnight black, but definitely rich - pours with a large, light tan head, retains a small cap, leaves some nice streaks and spots of lacing

Smell: Dark brown and chocolate malts with a nice amount of funk - brown and chocolate malts, with some roasted, lightly burnt malts - some funk, doesn't really scream Brett, but it's definitely in here - some musty, damp sourness, works well with the chocolate malts - some dark and stone fruits as well

Taste: Dark brown, caramel, and chocolate malts with some light sourness and funk - chocolate malts and some caramel grains - light malty sweetness - some light Brett notes with some wet funk - some stone fruit and dark berry skins - a bit leathery and phenolic

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nice carbonation, smooth, dry finish

Overall: Probably more refined than 2am Brett

This has some decent Brett funk with a nice base of chocolate and caramel. I don't think that the flavors really merge as well as they could, but this is definitely good. I have another bottle aging, and I'm curious what will happen in a few years.

look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: brown in color, 1/4 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: chocolate, dark fruits, and sour mix

Taste: dark and sweet milk chocolate, lots of balck cherries, light blueberry, and sour mix

Mouthfeel: sour with a slightly sweet start and a dry semi-bitter finish, moderate carbonation, light bodied

Drinkability: Really enjoyed the sour cherry and dark chocolate combination. Glad I was able to find this on draft. I would certainly pick this up again. One of my new favorite beers from a brewery that I like.
