Notes/Commercial Description:
Midnight Brett is chocolate brown in color, brewed with 2-Row, Midnight wheat, raw wheat and rye malt. It was hopped with a blend of Perle, Glacier and Simcoe hops. The beer was fermented with our house strain of Brettanomyces in stainless tanks. The finished beer has the aroma and flavor of fresh berries, sour cherries and a slight roasted character. The finish is pleasantly tart and fruity making this beer very drinkable.

Poured on tap into a tulip glass.

Super dark red body, hinting towards black. Foamy cap of mocha tan white, with a collar to match. Noticeable small carbonation.

Nose smells sweet fruit dominant. Welch's grape juice, mild little funk, good balance of sweetnees and funky character.

Sharp mild fruit sweetnees, good brett and funk mid palate almost with a nice woody roast character. Smooth wet feel, with moderate carbonation. Juicy quality slightly a bit, with grape and hints of dark red fruit, raspberries, cherry and so forth, mild pepper.

Real neat fun beer, like this sweet light fruit and brett mix.

Thanks to angrybabboon for sharing the bottle.

Appearance: Dark dark brown almost black. Head is a loose creamy khaki. Nice streaks of lacing. A bit bubbly on the pour.

Smell: Soft layers of Brett funk. A bit earthy with some damp musty elements. A touch tart with a mild almost lactic element. Sweet roasted malts. Hints of dark chocolate, coffee bean, and cocoa. Caramel malt sweetness. A touch medicinal with a phenolic element. Some bready sweetness.

Taste: Mildly roasted malt. A touch of chocolate malt coupled with cocoa and some coffee bean thrown in. Brett adds some soft funk with a mild tart edge. Some earthy and damp yeast. Super clean for Allagash thanks to the stainless steel. The missing oak is noticeable. A touch of lemon thrown in the back.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body with a moderate carbonation. A touch crisp with a clean, super clean for Allagash, finish.

Overall: Deep dusk.

Roasted and mildly bretty. Soft and mild for Allagash. The oak would have helped.

Split with Goblinmunkey7

Consumed 7/4/14

Appearance: Dark, dark brown - not exactly midnight black, but definitely rich - pours with a large, light tan head, retains a small cap, leaves some nice streaks and spots of lacing

Smell: Dark brown and chocolate malts with a nice amount of funk - brown and chocolate malts, with some roasted, lightly burnt malts - some funk, doesn't really scream Brett, but it's definitely in here - some musty, damp sourness, works well with the chocolate malts - some dark and stone fruits as well

Taste: Dark brown, caramel, and chocolate malts with some light sourness and funk - chocolate malts and some caramel grains - light malty sweetness - some light Brett notes with some wet funk - some stone fruit and dark berry skins - a bit leathery and phenolic

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nice carbonation, smooth, dry finish

Overall: Probably more refined than 2am Brett

This has some decent Brett funk with a nice base of chocolate and caramel. I don't think that the flavors really merge as well as they could, but this is definitely good. I have another bottle aging, and I'm curious what will happen in a few years.

look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: brown in color, 1/4 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: chocolate, dark fruits, and sour mix

Taste: dark and sweet milk chocolate, lots of balck cherries, light blueberry, and sour mix

Mouthfeel: sour with a slightly sweet start and a dry semi-bitter finish, moderate carbonation, light bodied

Drinkability: Really enjoyed the sour cherry and dark chocolate combination. Glad I was able to find this on draft. I would certainly pick this up again. One of my new favorite beers from a brewery that I like.

Poured from a caged/corked bottle dated Oct. 16, 2013 into my snifter.

A: Dark brown body, slightest brown/off-white head. Head is retained nicely throughout my entire time drinking. Lots of debris/particles in pour.

S: Some cherries/slight blueberry. Slightest vinegar notes. Little bit of lemony funk.

T: Not tart by any means. I'm picking up some berry (blueberry and cherry, probably more blueberry); some bitter coffee notes mid-taste, and I also get some barnyard funk on that end. slightest chocolate/mocha finish. If this thing was more tart, I think this would be amazing.

M: Medium to medium-full bodied. Kind of dry, despite the creamy and ever-present head. Don't really taste much booze, drinkable.

Overall: I think this thing would taste much better fresh. The funk from the bret made this beer taste dry to me for some reason; it seemed to have over powered the fruit presence . I probably shouldn't have let this age for so long. Also don't understand the high price for this beer. I give it a B+ overall.
