FV 13 marks our first venture into the world of foudre beers. Foudres are giant oak tanks used for aging (this one holds 2700 gallons.) FV 13 is a blend of wild yeast and bacteria, a base beer with lots of malt character, and about four years of patience.

A - Golden color, small head. On par with good beers of the style.

S - Awesome smell. Nice and tart. Some apple and pear.

T - Serious letdown. Doesn't live up to the smell whatsoever. Tart, some generic fruit, but nothing pronounced or special. Flavors are muddled.

M - Gets points for having no alcohol presence whatsoever. At this abv, that's a nice plus.

O - Another letdown from Allagash. They don't do anything special in my opinion. When I smelled this I was very impressed and hoping they finally pulled one off, but I was wrong. I'd drink it, but I probably wouldn't buy it.

Pours a light brown mahogany in color w. a 1/2 finger white head that quickly dissipates to an outer ring of foam that left light lacing. Aromas of acidity, oak, cherry skins, leather, and a touch of wet dog (funk). The flavor was of sour acidity up front, followed by cherry and cherry skins mixed w/ pinot noir, and a finish of oak/leather w/ light wet sock (funk). Medium bodied w/ spot on carbonation. Extremely easy to drink w/ well hidden ABV as most sours have.

Overall, a solid well-crafted brew that I would drink again w/o hesitation, but slightly misclassified. This is a Flanders Red w/ subtle to moderate Oude Bruin characteristics not an American Wild, and this is not a negative.

Bottle from Binny's Lakeview. Served in a Darkness tulip at Sean's place.

A - Nick thick tan foam settles to a thin cap, thin collar, and a few splotches of lace. Hazy amber-copper body.

S - Acetic, spicy oak, some tart peach, light raspberry, as well as some mild lactic sourness. Nice fruitiness considering there isn't any fruit in here.

T - A decent malt heft reveals the listed 8.9%, but otherwise the alcohol is well-concealed. More acetic, cherry vinegar, still fruity but not as much stone fruit. Some mildly dirty, medicinal brett in the finish.

M - Dry, tannic, oaky, with moderate carbonation. Medium-bodied, with light alcohol warmth by the end of my 6oz pour.

D - The heavy oak character gives this a more American spin, and it's not quite as sweet as something like Rodenbach. I enjoyed this, and it's nice to see that the quality has been maintained, or even increased, as Allagash expands their wild program. Would happily drink this again.

375ml corked and caged bottle served in my Allagash chalice at 55 degrees. Pours a dull copper with just the slightest haze. Head is 3/4's of an inch, bright white and rocky. As it dissipates into a soapy slick, delicate, textured, concentric bands of lacing are revealed. Copious tiny bubbles are present effervescing in solution and also adhering to the walls of the glass. What a great nose on this beer - tannic, tart, some vinegary notes, all reminiscent of a flanders red or oud bruin. I also get a suggestion of cherry Sucrets. Taste follows nose; however, there's a slightly medicinal quality to the flavor profile and some vanilla notes come out as the beer warms. Mouthfeel is light-medium. Carbonation is minimal, but the acidity gives quite a bit of character. There's also a trace of creaminess to the texture and the finish is quite dry. Overall, more of a Flanders Red/Oud Bruin in style than what I have come to associate with an American Wild. Enjoyable, but for the price point, I'd go with a Rodenbach Grand Cru.

375ml bottle, dated 11/29/2012; so about 1.25 years old. I can't remember who sent this to me; I think it was John G. So if that's you, thanks a lot! Poured into a Surly Darkness goblet today, 2/5/2014.

App- Medium-dark brown-amber body, clear with a 1 finger white head with decent retention and a little bit of lacing. Nothing particularly special.

Smell- Tart cherries, sweet dark toffee. Smells acidic, perhaps 4/10 acidity so not a true sour that induces heartburn from just the smell, but its fairly sour. A good whiff of that Allagash funk. But yeah, the cherry tartness comes out well here. A bit of oak wood comes out here too. Complex and interesting.

Flavour- Similar to the nose. Oak, toffee, vinegar, tart cherries, faint funk. The cherries are strong here. This drinks basically like a Flanders red. Fair acidity, 4/10.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied for a sour, great carbonation. Not difficult to drink but easy to sip on. Don't feel the ABV on this despite this being 8.90%!

Overall- Interesting oak-aged sour, but certainly nothing near the best beers that Allagash makes. I'm looking at you, Resurgam. I won't be looking for this one again, but I'm glad to have tried the first beer they made in their foeders. Allagash is the closest you can get to Belgium without going there.

Reviewed from notes.

A - Poured into a Kate the great tulip a hazy, honey hued brew with a thin one finger head that fades to leave a light, thin head.

S - Sour, creamy tart cherries and light malt vinegar and vinous barrel notes.

T - Similar to the nose here, this is an incredibly quafable sour with good vinuos and milky notes. More of those tart cherries, flashes of malt vinegar, and a touch of barrel.

M - Mouthfeel is a bit too light for me. Carbonation is good but would just like a bit more body.

O - Overall, a solid beer from Allagash. Not quite as good as their Coolship beers though, just not worth the price.

375 mL bottle poured into snifter glass on 22-Mar-13.

Aroma is very gueuze-like. Vinegary tartness with some plum / apple / peach combo, all grounded in oak barrel depth. Flavors have cherry and vanilla notes.

Medium to full carbo that gets really sprite as you swallow. Dry finish.

Reminds me a lot of Consecration without the red wine presence. It's almost got a touch of it though somehow.

A. Caramel color, small off-white head.

S. Lots of gamey brett, vinegar and green apple.

T. Moderate acetic and lactic sourness, lemon and sour apple, dry oak, light vanilla and toffee in the finish.

M. Light-bodied, tannic feel, moderate carbonation.

O: This is a pretty good aceto/brett-centered beer. The acidity is balanced by a decent amount of malt/tannic sweetness.

Served from bottle into Teku glass.

A - Nice amber color with light tan head that remains as the beer sits.

S - Very nice aroma with a little sweetness and fruity tartness as well as a bit of wood.

T - A blend of sweet and tart fruit flavor at the beginning that fades into a dry tartness. This blends with some oak presence. No alcohol flavor comes through. Some slight vinegar notes as it warms a bit.

M - Crisp and dry with a healthy dose of carbonation.

O - very enjoyable glad I picked up a bottle, good amount of sour in my opinion, not overwhelming.

Poured from the bottle into a goblet.

The beer pours a cloudy dark reddish amber color with a finger of fluffy off white head. The head sticks around quite nicely. The smell is quite sour and funky with a nice fruity sweet note to it. The taste isn't as intensely sour as I expected from the smell. I'm getting an herbal funk along with a mild oaky note. The taste has a touch of herbal sweetness to it along with a very tart finish. The carbonation is very smooth with small bubbles. The finish isn't as dry as I thought it would be.

Consumed 7/7/13

Appearance: Pours mostly clear, with a light haze - deep copper with some hints of orange and brown - big, creamy, light beige head - leaves some nice streaks of lacing

Smell: Sour, funky, with some sharp, ripe oak - acidic and lactic sourness - some tartness - an undercurrent of vinegar and some acetone - some fruitiness, like cherries and generic berry skin - loads of oak, very woody, with some wood funk

Taste: Sour, tart, oak, lots of complexity - sharp, acidic sourness, with some damp lactic sour, not exactly mouth-puckering, but definitely sour - average level of tartness - touches of vinegar and something that reminds me of Chap Stick - some nice fruitiness, reminiscent of cherries and raspberries - earthy and a bit musty - loads of oak, with some notable tannins - some caramel malts - alcohol is not really noticeable - starts off decent, achieves greatness when it warms up

Mouthfeel: Medium body, very smooth, nicely carbonated

Overall: A timely reminder that Allagash is pretty awesome

This is not the best sour I've ever had, but it's very, very good. It's very complex, with a wide array of sour, tart, fruity, oaky, and funky notes. I've certainly enjoyed sours from Allagash at fests, and I'm very thankful that I've now had time to sit down with a bottle. I hope they continue to develop their sour program.

Thanks to Steveadore for knocking another beer off my wants list this is a nice surprise extra!

375ml C&C bottle. bottled on 12/21/2012.

Loud pop as the cork comes out of the bottle.

poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: reddish brown bodied beer almost a copper colored beer. almost 3 full fingers of an off white head that drops down to a thin cap.

Smell: bold nose full of cherries and vanilla, wet and tannic oak, hint of sweet slighty fruity malts with vinous wine notes. Smells like bigger bolder flanders red. Incredable nose!

Taste: Big oak notes, really woody and lots of earthiness, then lots of caramel malts. Middle of the beer you get the lactic sour flavor with hints of tart cherries and a touch of vanilla. Also some vinous wine notes mix with a hint of fruity malt. Great balance of sweet and sour flavors. As this beer warms it gets a little bit medicinal; so I gotta ding this beer just a little bit for that.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low end of moderate carbonation levels. Not quite, but almost a semi-dry finish. Fairly clean sour beer, but its still a little bit sticky. Drinks like its 6%; well hidden ABV. Pretty smooth and subtle beer. Slightly creamy mouthfeel.

Overall: I really like this Allagash beer; its really solid. It does remind me of a Flander Red, but not as sweet as most from that beer style. I like the Coolship beers much more than this Allagash beer, but its definately not a slacker. It seems like Allagash's calling card is balance when it comes to sour beers. Allagash is a fantastic domestic sour brewer.

375ml with cork and cage. Bottled on 12/21/2012. Served in a Russian River stemmed glass. Cork removed with a loud pop.

Appearance: Dark amber/orange in color. 1 finger of an off white, cream colored head. Body is slightly hazy with lots of visible carbonation streaming throughout. Head stuck around through the whole glass and left some nice lacing.

Smell: Oak, lactic and acidic sourness, sour red grape, orange, peach/apricot, light barnyard funk, and a hint of vanilla.

Taste: Much less sour then the nose would indicate. The sourness is actually quite low. Lots of oak and vanilla barrel character, light lactic sourness, apricot, blood orange

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a soft creamy mouthfeel. Medium soft carbonation. Very light bitterness in the finish. Gentle alcohol warmth after it goes down, but the alcohol is hidden extremely well.

Overall: Interesting wild ale from Allagash. A stronger tatness/sourness could have really sent this one over the top for me, but its still an excellent beer thats worth seeking out.

375ml caged and corked bottle. Merci beaucoup to hoppypocket for sending this across the continent to me. Nice sepia-toned foeder depicted on the label.

This beer pours a rather murky, cloudy dark bruised apricot amber hue, with one finger of sludgy, tightly foamy off-white head, which leaves a few random swaths of settling whipped cream lace as it gradually fades to nil.

It smells of tart acetic acid fronted apple, cherry, and white grapes, moderate musty funk, edgy pale malt, vanilla and caramel-tinged wooden planks, a strange whiff of gritty candi sugar, dry earthy yeast, and an indistinct vinous booziness. The taste is more apple and white wine vinegar, lightly funky green yeast, softly wooden vanilla, caramel and alcohol notes, faint sour milk, a later surge of sour plums and black cherries, an obscured pale and caramel malt base, and musty, earthy hops.

The bubbles are generally supportive, and little more, the body a surprising medium weight, and equally smooth, the overarching tartness having little effect here, so much so, that a wee bit of airy creaminess seems capable of rearing its shy head. It finishes weirdly off-dry, the oak and malt sourced caramel still kickin' it unabashedly in the face of the lingering multifaceted sourness. Yo.

A pleasantly approachable barrel-aged wild ale, the wood apparently taking the edge off of the sour, tart, and funky essences (I say that without having tried any other offering from this brewery). Rather, the sweetness complements the sourness, et al, to the point of a semblance of balance. Tasty, complex stuff, this is.

A - pours an amber orange with a finger of light tan head, decent retention and very good lacing. Lots of chunky darker sediment at the bottom, perfect for movember

S - acidic sourness. Bubblegum and horseradish

T - 2012 vintage, less tart but still nicely sour and exactly as it smells with emphasis on lighter bubblegum flavors

M - medium bodied it less, mildly sticky on the tongue

Light fizzy head, hazy orange red color.

Nose had tart fruit, balaton cherry like fruit, light tart funk, sour malt, light malt vinegar, light vinous and barrel

Taste light sour, some malt, tart balaton cherry, cherry cough syrup, hint malt vinegar, light vinous and barrel sticky syrupy. It also has a little flemmy sticky feel as it finishes long and fairly sour, a little lactobacillus like sour funk.

Mouth is med to lighter bodied, decent carb.

Overall pretty nice sour, good sour funk, light fruit flavors from the wild yeast, just a bit of malt, etc. However, this isn't quite as good as the Coolship beers, and it's almost the same price, so hard to go for more of this despite being a good sour.

Presentation: 12.7 oz corked and caged bottle poured into my Russian River tulip glass. Bought this today at the brewery. Bottled on 10/28/2012.

Appearance: Light brown in color with a touch of amber. Pours a pretty minimal head but holds a nice, light beige lacing throughout.

Aroma: The wild yeast is definitely strong here. Red wine and sweet cherries provide some really nice fruity tones. A touch of caramel as well. There is a slight burn from the alcohol as well but it is not too strong at all.

Taste: Not overly tart upfront or at all. Some subtle tartness with red wine tones. Really nice balanced sweetness of cherries. Oak, caramel and a touch of vanilla as well. Really smooth and the alcohol is really nicely toned down.

Mouthfeel: Really nice lively carbonation and light bodied.

Overall, a really solid wild ale from Allagash. The balance of the red wine, oak, and sour tones is well done. The alcohol is really deftly handled as well and doesn't feel too boozy.

Celebrating my 500th review with a sour which is kind of a risk for me, but it's Allagash and they've never steered me wrong. Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass. Label says Date Bottled: 11/8/2012.

A- Pours a semi-hazy dark amber color with a 1/4 inch off-white head that doesn't retain long before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of surface foam. Drippy, sudsy lacing is not so resilient.

S- Good punch of lactic acid with lots of sweet dark fruits emanating such as cherry, plum, pear, granny smith apple and sour grape. Has a pretty classic Flanders style aroma.

T- Very sour and acidic as it burns the back of my throat. Soon, the palate acclimates and the fruitiness starts working its way in. Very fresh citric notes along with the dark fruits. Raspberry, cherry, apple and kumquat all come to mind. Drinkable and refreshing considering the ABV.

M- Dry with lots of pucker and a sharp acidic twang. Medium carbonation and a relatively hefty body for a wild ale.

O- Sours for me are like playing Russian Roulette (though I guess that's also how the brewer who's making it feels). I tend to like the sweeter ones more although, if it's too sour, I still won't like it. This one is pretty much right on the money: lots of fruit characteristics to balance out the medium-high level of sour and a feel that's not too harsh. Though my 500th review isn't a scorcher, it's a damn fine beer and that's good enough for me. Forever in debt to BlackBelt5112203 for this one.

A: Pours a clear ruby red. Big effervescent tan head. Head fades slowly, leaving behind moderate walls of lacing. Good retention.

S: Cherries and lots of them. Tart cherries and sweet cherries at the same time. Touch of leather?

T: Pretty tart cherries initially. Backed up by a sweet caramel-like malt though that really prevents this one from becoming too sour. Has a light vinegar twang throughout. Drying, tingly tart cherry cough syrup aftertaste with hints of leather.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: Really nice balance of tart and sweet flavors. Honestly might be the best wild ale I've ever had. Nice bright but well-integrated flavors. Sweet and sour. Delicious and well crafted.

A - Pours amber with a slight haze to it. The light khaki head dissipates quickly and there's not really any retention or lacing to speak of.

S - Mildly sweet vinegar, oak, mustiness and tartness.

T - Tart cherries, red wine qualities, vinegar, oak and light sweetness throughout.

M - Medium bodied/carbonation. Seems a bit too thick for the style.

O - A fine example here. Taste is always subjective, but this will do.

Bottled 12/2012. Poured into a teku. Delicious, sour, smooth. It might have been a tad more sour if I drank a few months ago, but I found this delicious anyway. Allagash continues to impress with their higher-end beers, with bold and complex flavors. It smells great and it drink just as satisfyingly. I didn't get the funk that others did--something I noticed with most old ales. Instead, I got an appealing sour and tart taste that is balanced by the right amount of heat. Can't wait to get my hands on this again next year.

A: Pours a hazy light orangish-copper with a thin white head which fades quickly to the rim leaving just a few spots.

N: Tannic and basalmic sting with vinous and cherry fruit notes.

T: Prickly sour and tart with some funk and tannins and a mixture of fruits including grapes and cherries.

M: Medium body and light carbonation. Oaky and tart finish.

O: Would like to have more. Enjoyed the barrel aging here.

S: lots of sour and funky notes dominate. Sour and tart cherries, must, oak, red wine, barnyard, and sweet Belgian yeast underneath.

T: similar to the aroma, thereis a wonderful mix of sour and tart fruit, acetic vinegar, musty and funky flavors, barnyard, oak and red wine, etc. There's a lot going on and if makes for a delightfully delicious beer.

M: medium-light body with lowish carbonation, this beer just avoids being watery.

O: a good sour overall. A little undercarbonated, but smells and tastes great.

375ml, dated 11/29/2012, poured into an Allagash Coolship tumbler.

The beer pours a rich caramel color, medium amber, with slight orange hue that is very clear, with a handful bubbles rising to the top of the glass. A thick, soapy, off white head rises out of the glass, nearly 2 fingers high that has very, very good retention and leaves some sticky lace behind. The aroma is of light funk, tart cherry, soft oak, brown sugar and rich malted grain. It's not an overly complex aroma, but very nicely balanced and surprisingly malty, but not over the top, the sweetness and tartness play nicely together. The flavors are very similar, rich grain, tart cherry with a nice amount oak that brings out some caramel and brown sugar with some soft and light funk at the end. The mouthfeel is nice, lots of carbonation, but it reads very smoothly, coats the mouth well and finishes softly with a creamy touch and lightly dry sensation.

Verdict: A very nice Wild Ale from Allagash. Yet another success in their line of sour and wild ales, and one of the more peculiar wild ales I've tried to date with the malt character. Definitely worth trying.
