not a big fan of porters in general, but a huge allagash fan so gave it a shot. smell and flavor were dominated by smoke and peat, small traces of chocolate in the flavor as it warmed but no real or discernible taste of the blood orange - though it was a little oaty, or creamy in the mouthfeel. rather disappointed by this one.

750ml bottle poured into a 25cl Allagash Cervoise.

The beer pours a nice jet black color, only the faintest touches of cola brown when struck by the light. A soft, but taut and fizzy, caramel colored head rises from the beer, about 2 fingers high, quite lively and has good retention and leaves a good amount of soapy lace behind. The aroma is of bitterly roasted grain, bittersweet chocolate, a bit of creamy milkiness with some soft coffee bean that brings out a bit of fruitiness, undoubtedly the blood orange, but for it being the main adjunct it's quite subdued and easy to miss. The flavors are in line, strong roasted quality, almost chalky and ashy, soft grain, a bit of the same milkiness is apparent as well, a touch of coffee that mingles with the milkiness as if it were creamer. The finish is more rewarding, soft chocolate and delicate citrus, very much like a chocolate covered orange lingers very well, but is a bit understated with the harsher roasted flavors that dominate this beer. The mouthfeel is nice, very soft, creamy yet lively, coats the mouth quite well and finishes with ease.

Verdict: A pretty solid robust porter, although the blood orange component is a bit of a tricky one. The chocolate covered orange flavor is certainly the intended target, but it's just not the front runner like in a beer such as Night Stalker or Daybreak. I enjoyed drinking this beer and had no issues finishing the 750ml bottle over the course of an afternoon/evening, but for the price, this was a big miss. I'll likely just stick to Belgian and Wild Ales from Allagash from now on.
