Notes/Commercial Description:
McGovern's Oatmeal Stout is a very dark, full-bodied stout with a smooth, moderate bitterness and roasted malt character. Integral parts of this stout include its subtle chocolate and caramel flavors. Hops also provide a subtle aroma and flavor without overpowering McGovern's overall balance. The milky, caramel colored head has small, tight, foamy bubbles that slowly cascade into the dark. aromatic liquid thanks to its oatmeal heritage.

Oatmeal also gives McGovern's a richer, full bodied quality with-out the bitter, burnt after-tasty often associated with stouts and other dark beers. This makes for a smoother drinking experience, especially for those who plan to enjoy more than one. Bartender Important - When pouring McGovern's Oatmeal Stout on draft, use any tap faucet with regular bar gas for best results. A traditional restrictor faucet cannot be used.

I know my scores are kind of all over the place, but let me explain...

Poured into a standard pint. Pours a thick looking black, but wait... Holy head, Batman! Half the bottle on a relatively moderate (slower than average, but not slow) pour and the glass is half foam. The beer was warmed for about 10 minutes, but is not, by any means, warm. The pour took a lot longer than I thought. This was the first strike on this beer. The liquid looks fantastic and the head is a nice dark tan color, but the size of the head is too much.

Smell is a nice roasted scent. Nothing overwhelming. Perhaps a little burnt coffee in there as well. It's definitely a good smell.

Taste is awesome. Lots of roasted malts. I noticed something familiar, but couldn't put my finger on it until going through some of the previous reviews... it's toffee. As the beer warms and gets towards the end of the glass, the toffee disappears and turns into a slight chocolate malt flavor, though the roasted malts stay dominant.

Mouthfeel takes a hit because of the extra carbonation. Though it's not overwhelming, it's a little too much. It also takes a hit because while it looks thick, it feels a bit thinner than it should be.

This is one very drinkable stout and a great stout at that. I would definitely recommend this one to anyone looking for a good stout and could easily spend the night drinking these.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip.

Appearance: Pours a deep black with a one-finger tan head that dissipates quickly. Minimal lacing. Looks really dark and full bodied.

Aroma: Smells of black coffee, dark chocolate, oatmeal, and roasted malt. Some hop bitterness, too.

Taste: The coffee flavor is really forward. The oatmeal is definitely there - it kind of tastes like an extra-smooth coffee stout. Tasty stuff. Lots of flavor. Some nice bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Super smooth, as an oatmeal stout should be. Very full bodied stout. I'd call it a sipper.

Overall: This is a big, sturdy stout to enjoy on its own or with a good meal. Definitely a good pick-up for fans of coffee stouts and oatmeal stouts.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle notched September 2014. Sampled on March 8, 2014.

The pour is very dark brown to about black with some mahogany hues around the edge of the glass. Long lasting tan head.

Aroma of dark biscuit malts, cooked oatmeal and a little bit of smoke.

The body is thinner but it is essentially still creamy and smooth.

The taste also brings out the dark malt and oatmeal character with a mild dry bitterness to finish. It is a pretty decent beer from Maine.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. 2/17

Pours dark brown with a little tan foam on top. and a bit fizzy. Rich roasted oaty nose. Taste is a hearty wall of oats, coffee grittiness, then suddenly a smooth finish. Mild bitter. Good close. A little milky, but not in a sweet stout kind of way.

Best before April 2014.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams nonick.

a: Opaque black with a finger thick tan head which dissipated quickly to thin even surface foam and a few small patches of lacing.

s: Chocolatey dark malt.

t: Heavy smoky dark malt up front, cigar ash aftertste. :Later some bitter cold coffee notes appear.

m: Medium with good body.

o: A tasty stout, although the initial aroma belies the heavy smoky taste. Not terribly easy drinking due to the smoky taste and lingering tobacco ashy flavor. Might be good with a cigar though for that reason.

A: Pours a rich dark color completely blackened like very used motor oil. with little or no head.

S: Aroma is of coffee and toasted malts.

T: Taste is of coffee, licorice, and molasses. Hints of sweet malts, and burnt toast.

M: Mouthfeel is silky and smooth lightly carbed with a slightly metallic taste.

O: Overall this is a great oatmeal stout from New England area Maine for sure and they know cold weather and hot coffee this is a great substitute for that. I would think about this one for breakfast, very yummy.
