look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Presentation: 16.9 oz brown bottle with a foil wrap around the cap and neck, "best before" date on the back label. Thin film of sediment on the bottom of the bottle.

Appearance: Pale slightly hazy straw golden colour, decent little powdery white lace that clings here and there.

Smell: Very clean higher alcohols at play in the aroma with suggestions of distilled grain spirits. Mild flowery hop and some hay in the nose to show that there is some solid beer character there.

Taste: Crisp biting carbonation that runs towards coarse, the brazen spicy sweet alcohol attacks the palate with a distilled spirit like prickle. Malt sweetness is very pale with some cereal grain characteristics, grain and husk that flow like fresh cut hay. Hops dangle a medium bitterness that tags along for the ride with the strong armed alcohol. Alcohol is a touch fusel though mostly clean and is quick to warm the mouth, throat and body. Sweet finish that runs semi-clean.

Notes: Do they sell this one in 40’s down in their hood? Spot on for the American Malt Liquor Style though this is probably not what they were going for. Careful with this one meaning don’t make this one of your last beers of the night.

Labeled as an "Extra" Lager which must mean "Strong". 500 ml brown bottle.
Production date: 3-15-2014. Best before: 3-15-2015.

A: Pours a clear pale yellow with a one-inch thick white head which fades to a thin cap and leaves splotches of lace.

N: Corny, grainy, malty, yeasty, with some boozy notes.

T: Grainy and corn-like, sweet, yeasty, slightly metallic, slightly "off" - something odd.

M: Semi-moderate body and medium carbonation. Finishes with a sweet, syrupy corn-like malty and yeasty.

O: There is some crispness, but the higher ABV reduces the lightness of the lager style.

From the 25 fl. oz. bottle. It's old I think. Stamped: 290812-290813. Sampled on 7/11/14.

It pours your basic pale yellow with a fizzy white head, Good clarity. Busy carbonation.

Aroma: Not much excitement here, Russian malts, cardboard, cream, cardboard, but clean crisp hops.

The body is light to medium and somewhat on the smooth side.

Taste: Well, nothing thrilling here. Toasted biscuit malts. sweet caramel, some hop notes but generally pretty boring, Definitely not the kind of "strong ale" I prefer to drink. Although I do feel like listening to to Anya Muzafaroza "Music of the Rain" as I drink it.

Poured from a 51 oz plastic bottle (yes you read that correctly. Pours murky gold with thin white head. The nose is sweet and grainy with notes of musty grapes. The taste is sugary sweet with light grain and more sweetness. Mouthfeel is well carbed with thick body. Overall, this brew is an experience... Not necessarily good.

This is a case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. My scores do account for that.

I learned of Baltika #9 years ago at a bar, quickly embracing it's strong bready flavor and sweet, malty aroma. When Russians say a beer is strong, they aren't kidding. Don't bother with this brew if you like hops; nothing seeps through the extreme malty flavor.

Unfortunately, I've found nothing but skunked excuses for this beer in the occasional bottle I find on the shelf. After three or four tries, I've all but given up. Maybe it's just guaranteed to be fresher at a bar.
