Pours a dark almost black color, the only thing keeping me from mistaking this for a stout is the reddish brown tint around the edges and through the rest of the beer when held to light. Head was initially thick, a dark off-white color, and faded leaving a lace throughout the rest of the beer when drank. Sweet, toasty malt aromas hit the nose first, some alcohol is present as is raisin, chocolate, a hint of currant and a slightly vinuous smell.

Taste isn't quite what the scent would suggest, the alcohol is well masked, even when warm, and the sweet caramel, roasted malt flavors and bite are definitely up front, but they don't dominate. Its dry on the palate, with notes of currant and dark fruit.

Mouthfeel and drinkability are both good. I feel like this beer is barely hanging on to 4.0 ratings in all categories, I can't justify giving it a 3.5 in any individual category, but if asked to rate this beer overall on a 1-5 scale I'd give it about a 3.77 not a flat 4.0.

This was poured from the bottle into a special glass I got from attending an event a few years ago called "Hats Off to Home Brewers," hosted by Boulevard and Deschutes. I have been on hiatus for about nine months, and this is my emergence from hibernation.

Appearance - Looks like you would expect a porter to look in the color department: dark brown, almost black. Very little head is present, and consequently very little lacing is left on the glass. There is nothing of note about the bottle and/or packaging.

Smell - Again pretty par for the course, although the nose is a little subdued. Earthy, roasted and caramel malts with a mild coffee zip.

Taste - Nothing spectacular, but good. Follows the nose very closely, although there is the slight addition of a mild chocolate as well.

Mouthfeel - This is where the beer disappointed me mildly. I found it to be very thin, not with the volume or heartiness you would expect out of a porter. Finishes thin and uninspiring.

Overall - Not a bad beer, a decent beer to knock off of your list if you were on a "Beers of the World" quest or something of that nature. Otherwise, there's 20 other porters I would recommend before this one at the same price point.

A good lasting beige head tops a very dark beer. Lacing is pretty good.

Smells of chocolate and berries with a hint of milkiness. An inviting aroma.

The taste is of dark chocolate and roasted malt. Vinous notes are present as are suggestions of berries and a touch of sweet milk. The flavours are of medium intensity. I would have liked a more overwhelming strength of flavour but what I tasted was very pleasant.

For a 7% beer drinkability is high and it could be drunk like a 5 - 5% stout.

A very decent porter from Russia. Would make a good alternative to Guiness Foreign Extra which has a similar strength. This one has the possible benefit of sold in 500ml bottles.

My mark out of one hundred would be 80.

From bottle dated 07/04/13 - 07/04/14.

Aroma is sweet and earthy. Pours a deep ruby brown with a creamy head.thehead does not linger, there is no lacing of the glass. A bit of an oily film. The taste is alcoholic dark fruit cake. A lingering but not unpleasant aftertaste on the tounge. A bit bitey upon warming. Decent but uninspiring overall.
