I been here 4 times in 12 years. I mainly come for the seafood, which can be quite good. Its a nice night out to entertain folks, as they can try different style beers. For the beer geeks its very disappointing. I tried the mailbock which is quite decent, but nothing I would make a special trip for. It can be a fun place if they have any live music.

Service varies allot by when you come in and where you sit.

I have to rate this place low, because I think of all the local GB this is the worse. Go for the food, not the beer.

Some folks like their beer and that's great, and its on the beach.

Ok its not that bad but its just a restaurant really that happens to make a beer of two and not that well.

Visit again on August 20, 2010:
not much changed, had the seasonal bock, it sucked like most their beers, the strange stout was really bad this time, not Recommended. Food was decent.

We used to stop by Ragtime regularly for the food more than the beer, but about a year and a half ago the food quality fell off dramatically. This seems to have happened at all of the Gordon Biersch owned brewpubs in the area at about that time. At this point I wouldn't bother with the food, it is overpriced and mediocre, which is a shame because as I said it used to be quite good. The atmosphere is pretty standard for a beach restaurant, though it turns into a douchey pickup spot for sad middle aged people late night. The beer is ok, pretty average, outdated 90s brewpub stuff (a light, a stout, a pale ale, etc). There is the occasional seasonal. All are well made but uninspired. Much better beer at Greenroom or Engine 15, but people who don't know any better will like Ragtime's offerings.

I love the beer but the food is not impressive at all. There are only a couple good things on the menu, and many times I have received my food over cooked and in poor form. I even found a curly dark hair on my sandwich once. The restaurant is pretty dingy and needs a good deep cleaning and a remodel. The beers that are brewed on premises are wonderful! They have a pale ale that is very hoppy with a pretty high ABV!!! They always have a seasonal brew that changes. This place has a devoted group of frequenting customers that attend happy hour on a daily basis.
Overall, great beer, food needs huge improvement!

Atmosphere - As you walk in the bar area is to your left and the dinning room is to your right. Behind the is a glass wall dividing the bar from the brewery. Lots of wood throughout the place. Has a small town local restaurant feel for some reason.

Quality/Selection - They had six house beers on tap that where fairly average tame styles. Their Pale was probably the best thing they had on during my visit. Sad to say I don't think too many people are coming here for locally crafted beer.

Service - I sat at the bar during my visit and was served by the bartender. In this day in age of lowered standards I'll say he was average. I asked for some beer and he brought it to me and then asked if I wanted anything else to which I replied with yeah a menu. The menu never came so I finished my beer and left.

Ragtime has a good reputation and seems to be popular with the locals. I've been a couple times and while I don't hate the place, I'm not as impressed at a lot of other people.

It's not a bad place, it's actually well above average, but it's just not great like a lot of people have told me.

It's a well-updated place, not a little hole in the wall. The staff is friendly and there are nice views of the action around the building if you can get a window table.

The food is fair, not bad, not great, but a bit pricey. Same with the beer. I read over the beer selection several times before finally deciding what I wanted. It wasn't because the selection was huge, I just didn't see anything that I really wanted.

It's a place to go once, but my wife and I don't make a habit of it.

Located a mere two blocks from the beach, the main doorway opened on to the combo m.d.s. and logo item display case on the right with a bar at a left oblique and another bar running down the left wall. The main bar, however, was all of the way aft on the right and it was a marble topped square with the kitchen off to the left. There was bi-level restaurant seating (booths below, tables and chairs above) on the left, approaching the lav. Once again, my Gordon Biersch Passport Rewards card was accepted. Keep scoffing at my love of chain brewpubs, but I'm going to keep frequenting them. Friendly staff and I got to meet the brewer.

Beers: Dolphin's Breath Lager; Westbury Wheat; Red Brick Ale; A. (Alexander) Strange Stout.
Seasonals - Honey Bock; Bitter American Pale Ale.

I have been frequenting this establishment for several years in spite the fact that I live 1200 miles away from it. It is always our first stop on vacation every year. Their Red Brick Ale is my favorite beer in the world. I might add that it goes well with their blackened snapper. The rest of their ales are quite good as well. The atmosphere is very nice. Obviously a big hit with the locals. The brewmaster (Scott) is a hell of a nice guy, and is happy to talk beer with you. He was nice enough to give me a number of good tips as I have gotten into brewing at home over the last several years. If you find yourself in Jacksonville I would highly recommend taking Atlantic Blvd. east to second street, look left, go in grab a seat and prepare to enjoy!

Overall a great place to hang out. It's a combonation bar and resturant and one of the few that are equally as good.

The resturant is great, noew olreans style food, lots of seafood and it's right near the beach. The foos it not overpriced and most meals I have had there have been excellent for a local beer pub.

The bar has great beands playing there sometimes and the bar service is great and they have an outside beer garden. The weakness is the beer. It's adequate and not a total zero. Just needs improvement. The american pale ale is there top beer by far. and similar to a SN with a little more hop bite.

First and foremost, i love all brewpubs in Jacksonville Florida for the reason of availablity of great beer and excellent selection of food as well.

Ragtime is no exception. With that said it is the closest to the beach and has the most party-friendly atmosphere than Seven Bridges and A1A Ale Works. Nice wood plank look of the Ocean.
Service in top notch with highly entelligent staff to explain every detail of their establishment. Selection of wonderous selections of fresh seafood make it a plus. Crawfish baby yeah
Food is excellent with the craft beer that it is served with. Very reasonable.

Ragtime review;
This is a local favorite here in the Jacksonville Beaches / NE Florida area. They have good food, great service, great music, great atmosphere - and best of all great beer!!! They typically have a full bar, with 5-8 craft brews brewed in house directly from the serving tanks. I highly recommend anyone to visit this place if you are in the NE Florida area. It's in a great area of our beaches community so check it out. It has been there for decades, and it is ALWAYS consistent!

Ragtime is located in at the intersection of Neptune and Atlantic beach communities and the area is a great plac to walk around for people watching, shopping, bar hopping, nightlife.

This is a Gordon Biersch establishment, related to the Seven Bridges & A1A Aleworks that are located here.

A - very nice looking place with 3 bars and a nice restaurant with some exposed bricks. A place you can take a date and enjoy yourself. You can sit in different areas of the restaurant and it's like a totally different place.

Q - Clean establishment, nice tables.

S - I have heard various stories on the service, however the times that I have been here, the service was always good. Sometimes you may have a decent wait to be seated on a Fri or Sat night, but what do you expect?

S - The beer section is lacking, the food menu is good. They serve liquor as well. I think it's better than most places, but as for beer, it's either the bottle options or their own. Their Pale ale is pretty good though with a nice Hop bite.

F - The food is very good. Good seafood options and the seafood and pasta is very tasty.

A nice place to visit, especially if you are in the Beaches area. Enjoy.

First off a disclosure: This is a GB owned location.

Right on the beach in Jacksonville, this is a great location with fantastic food and great beer. the waitstaff is friendly and knowledgable.

If they have it, try the maibock. This is a fantastic beer. The others are good as well. I really liked the American Pale Ale, with a great NW hop character.

All is a little on the high side price wise, but not considerring you are on the beachfront.
The seafood is awesome. Great tuna, with fried spinach (try it!), and the salmon with BBQed oysters is great as well.

I had a few hours to kill one Saturday afternoon while in Jacksonville visiting family, so I headed toward the beach and wound up at the Ragtime Taproom. I had my sister-in-law with me and we both enjoyed tipping back a few micros in this casual beach town Brewpub / restaurant. We grabbed a couple of seats at the relatively small bar and ordered some wings and beers. I sampled the pale ale, the Mai Bock and the Irish Red, while my s-i-l enjoyed a mix of the Red and the Light. It was the first time I had come across a Brewpub that offered to mix their beers together to form different concoctions for different tastes. The beers were solid and the food was better than average. Parking is a bit of a pain, but I would definitely consider going back the next time I’m in the area.

I arrived late into town on a Saturday night after an 8-hour drive. Found this place and sat down for a much needed beer. I tried the sampler flight and there were some tasty offerings there. The maibock and the red ale were both very good, but the stout was excellent. It was like a scottish ale in smokiness, but had a bolder stout flavor - quite interesting.

The menu looked ok, but was late and the kitchen was closed.

The atmosphere was festive and it seemed like a place I could have enjoyed - which brings me to the service. I can't say much about the service here other than I was disappointed. It took a long time to get drinks from a bartender who seemed more interested in a lady on the other side. After last call, I asked the bartender if he could help me with some directions (Jacksonville is confusing and I needed help with some street names etc). He told me that it was after last call and he didn't have to talk with the customers anymore. I said that I only wanted some directions. He had a cigarette in his mouth and turned to walk toward the door and said F@#$ you! I had only had a beer and a sampler, so I wasn't drunk and was polite. Astonished, I left. I won't be returning, which is a shame.... because it did look to be a promising place.

I checked this place out on a Thursday night during a recent business trip. I sampled the Cajun Paella along with a few pints of their holiday porter. The Paella was excellent. It included crawfish, lobster, mussels, pork, tuna, shrimp all laid over a spicy bed of rice and served pipng hot. The porter had little nose, and a smooth and slighly spicy taste. I should have tried more, but I really enjoyed the porter, and kept telling myself I would try something different later. They actually have 3 total bars here. One right in front of the vats, one in the middle of the place (this seemed to be where people hung out and sipped mixed drinks), and one near the seating. There may be an additional bar outside, but it was raining and only smokers were venturing outside.

After the meal, me and a co-worker moved over to the 'main' bar. There was a local 3-piece which covered everything from Sublime to the Stones which started around 9 PM. I can't remember the name of the band, but they were very good and a crowd soon formed once they started playing.

This place has more of a local feel, than a tourist trap. The bartender was very knowledgable and answered all our questions. He told us their brewmaster was the best of the 3 locations, and that wasn't just his opinion. I will definitely stop back next time I am in Jacksonville.

I had just moved up to Jacksonville from Miami and was stoked to see that there were a few places to get a good beer. And I was quite suprised to find the Ragtime BrewPub out on Atlantic Beach, (not far from Jax Beach). The Atomsphere is a nice local pub feeling on the beach with friendly locals willing to tell you about the area and the beers they have on tap. The first beer I tried was the Double Bock which had just come out (Mid May) and was happy with the taste and how this hand crafted beer stood up to the other hand crafted beers I have tried in the past. But I have to say that the IPA is the best beer on tap that they run. So if your are looking for a good BrewPub to hit while in the area, this is worth the drive out to the beach for a good vibe and a great brew or two.

I have been back three times since my original review. I continue to get topnotch service from the bartender (Barry) so I’m raising my service score. The food also continues to be excel.

I wish they would offer a few more beer choices, but was pleasantly surprised to learn they now offer cask offerings at the bar in the music room.

Original Review of 6-16-06

***
I hosted a small diner party here and was very happy with this place.

They have two bars and a small music room. As others have noted, there is a bit of a rambling feel to this place. The decor reminded me a bit of something out of the late 1970s, kind of like the Regal Beagle on Threes Company. The music room has a fun atmosphere and the guitar player/singer was good.

The service was very good at the bar. Our bartender was a real pro. Our meal server was not bad, but not top notch, so the service rating is a combination of the two.

I liked their house beers. While not overly adventurous, they were solid. The pale ale had a nice bite and the Mai Bock was solid. They had 6 choices during my visit.

The food was very good. They offer lots of fresh grilled fish. Good sides and appetizers.

I would have no problem returning here. Plus, there are some other places to hit while you’re in the neighborhood.

Was in Jax for the GatorBowl/New Years Eve. Did downtown last year so we thought we'd hit the beash this time!
The beers were, just good, but not great. The Light Lager reminded me of a Becks a bit; the Irish Red was ok better than Killians for sure, the Red Brick Ale was rather bland, but the Stout was KILLER. Food was very good.I had their seared tuna and some of their kickass gumbo... more than I could eat and I eat a lot. I had no chance at dessert as I felt like the guy in the Meaning of Life... the one who blew up.

My wife and I visited in April 2004. They have an excellent young brewmaster who is really pushing the limits of what is allowed by this brewpub chain. He is using his seasonals to always have an IPA or pale ale on tap. The pale ale was on tap when we were there and was very good. The Red Brick Ale was also a good hoppy ale with a fairly strong alcohol content. We spoke to the brewmaster awhile and he explained that while his stout is always called A Strange Stout, he made a stronger stout under that name for St. Patrick's Day. He also makes different beers under the Westbury Wheat name. When we were there, it was an excellent hefeweizen. The beers here are all good and true to style. The brewpub is only 2 blocks from the ocean but is not set up for an ocean view. A rooftop patio would have a great view but the only outside seating involves a few tables in a dismal area in an alleyway. This is in a little "downtown" type are with a few bars and restaurants where Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach meet. We were at the St. Augustine brewpub from this chain last year and some of the same beer names were used but they were better beers at the Ragtime. This brewpub is worth a visit.
