Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. has a pretty dark copper color with a 1 inch head. Smell is fruity, yeast, malts. Taste is fruits up front, light sweetness, malty, easy drinking for the abv. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is an enjoyable beer.

(3.55) A: Milky beige covering, mostly lasting, rests atop a darken,dense sweet ice tea colored body. Slow rising carbonation when backlighted is gentle on the rise.

(3.55) S: Candy orange and cola, sun brewed tea and toasted malt are first impressions. Mid-level strength with earthy dry tea and fresh herbal hops. There are moments of fresh green stemmy scents as well.

(3.65) T: Flavor was sweet malt and tea, Earthy cola, spicy dry herbal notes with hints of cinnamon. Things finish off with a lightly dry toasted malt sweetness and spicy hop warmth.

(3.6) M: Mouthful was light on the tip of the tonuge, feeling much fuller around the edges and cheeks. Some silty residual maltiness provides texture.

(3.6) O: Nice drinkability, sweet malt and earthy tea and spicing adds complexity while a silty residual malting adds texture and depth.

12 ounce bottle into chalice, bottled on 3/7/2014. Pours lightly hazy deep orange/copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, plum, pear, apple, banana, clove, candi sugar, toast, biscuit, herbal, light bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good complexity and solid balance of big fruity/earthy/spicy yeast and light-moderate dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of raisin, plum, pear, apple, banana, clove, bubblegum, candi sugar, toast, biscuit, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, pear, apple, banana, clove, candi sugar, toast, biscuit, bubblegum, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Good complexity and solid balance of fruity/earthy/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt notes; with a big yeast flavor presence over malt, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this was a very solid dubbel style. Good complexity and solid balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt notes; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. The yeast definitely dominated the flavors and it needed more malt presence; but it was nicely enjoyable.

An extremely mediocre to less than mediocre Abbey style dubbel.

This beer is far too light in body and color to compare to the finer representations of the style. It pours a transparent brown with a thin, unimpressive head (poured by an Old Dominion employee at a beer festival) into a weizen glass.

Taste profile is slightly sweet, but not caramelly, and there are no defining fruit or malt notes to speak of. The flavor is almost all candy sugar with a sour quality that fails to capture the depth of the style. There simply isn't enough roasted malt character or richness for a dubbel.

Mouthfeel is carbonated and bubbly - not smooth as I would want. This beer would benefit from aging or aerating or nitro.

Overall: it falls in the style and is neither ss deep or, alternatively, as refreshing as I could want.
