A very nice brew for my first review of the year. Found a sixpack of this at Jungle Jim's International Market in Cincinnati. The Virginia border is just two miles from my house, and it's distressing that I can't find Old Dominion's excellent brews without driving at least three hours. This one pours a deep brown and opaque body, with two fingers of tightknit, tan head. Dramatic sheet and patch lacing is left behind. Excellent looking stout.
Aroma has vanilla, milk chocolate, mild coffee, and notes of oak wood.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a medium body and just enough carbonation to mingle the complexity of flavors.
Taste is much like the aroma, with creamy vanilla and chocolate. Some toasted walnuts are noted, and there are coffee notes but little bitterness. I don't pick up any notes of bourbon, and there are only some mild notes of dark fruits such as figs and raisins. Still, this is one of the tastiest American stouts I've sampled. Insanely drinkable at 5.2%. Highly recommended.

12 oz bottle poured into a Unibroue tulip. Bottling date edged off the side of the label. 0/17/? Beige head rests on a black body. Slick, clear lacing slides quickly down the glass. Aroma is dominated by coffee and malty sweetness. Taste is moderately sweet with coffee notes and roasted malt. I don't exactly pick up on the vanilla but it may be responsible for some of the residual sweetness, taste is more like a milk stout. Exceptionally easy to drink and delicious. My only complaint is naming a beer aged on oak chips "oak barrel stout". Just a touch misleading.

Dark brown to black with a nice creamy brown head with a lasting ring and spotty lace. Complex cocoa, vanilla, and oak aromas and flovors. Cocoa is big on the nose with a bit more vanilla in the flavor . Medium-full bodied with a smooth roasty and vanilla finish.

I prefer the bottled version better. The draft version at the OD Brewpub has too much bourbon character.

Have enjoyed a couple of these at Growler's Pub in Canton, a new pub opened by John Bates, former bartender at Racers Cafe.
It sits beside Guinness on the nitro tap, and is a special treat worth going donwtown for.
After the cascade of tiny bubbles finishes, you are left with a thick creamy head about an inch think, which is still partially there when the glass is empty. The mouthfeel provided by the nitro charge is as soft as cloud 9. The taste is all malt with pleasing notes of vanilla, oak, and toasty malt. It goes down so easily and the glass is finished before you realize. You are left with a finish of dark malt and some sweetness.
Highly recommended.

Poured into a Stone Impy Stout snifter. Impenetrable tar black with a massive rocky light brown head. The head settles down to a clean 1/4 inch after a little while.

The aroma is all about mocha hot chocolate roasted espresso beans. A really sweet appetizing smell, I just wanna jump right in.

A delicious stout! Creamy with an almost tart bitterness, rich chocolate flavors with a vanilla bean espresso taste. Thick and luscious, dampened only by the slightest hint of sourness in the finish, most surely because of the roasting. A lingering carbon finish.

Yeah, this hits the spot all the way. Goes down smooth as hot chocolate. I could probably chill with a few bottles by a roaring fire and discuss the merits of 1700 colonialism, puff a pipe, and be quite at peace with the world. Thanks to blitz134 for hooking me up with this awesome surprise!

My label is much different than the one pictured. But it appears to be this beer.

Thick-ass black body, you can spot some hues on the very edge if you look for it. Fluffy tan head, very sticky. Scent is a thick chocolate malt, a bit of roast. Mmm, nice blend. Deep dark malts dominate the brew, very nice touch of bitter hops. Full body, a bit wet but pretty thick. When i want a stout, thats what i want.

As they would say in chicago: "you can put it on the boaaard! YES!"

A- a dark dark brown almost black. I held a flashlight up to it and it just barely penetrates it. 1 finger head has a mocha color to it. carbonation bubbles trickle from the bottom and a little bit of sediment can be noticed.

S- got some chocolate malts with hints of the oak barrel coming through. it has a very sweet caramel smell to it when you get deeper into it mixed with a nice frothy coffee smell. Very complex. I even get some dark fruit smell in there as it warms up. Kinda reminds me of dark cherries.

T- It's hard to pick out the most up front flavor on this one. It is just as complex as the smell. smokey malts are probably the first thing I taste then the chocolate comes in and finally the caramel mocha coffee finish. The dark roast coffee flavor just sits on your tongue forever almost as a reminder to keep drinking.

M- medium body but very frothy. it just covers you palate. after you swallow it has that coffee effect on the tongue. A bit chalky. kinda gives you a dry feeling but it makes you salivate for more.

O- What a great beer. I am still developing a taste for stouts but this one is great. High marks for complex flavor and smells. Pick one up.

A - This beer is black as night, with a one and a half finger tan head.

S - Nutty oaky aroma, with hints of coffee and chocolate

T - Starts off slightly sour with a touch of hops, but then a nice strong maltiness kicks in with hints of bourbon and chocolate, and a smooth vanilla finish and a bit of sweetness.

M - Fairly heavy bodied with strong carbonation and a nice creamy texture

D - This is one of the few stouts I could probably drink all night because of its incredible rich and smooth taste. One of the better stouts I've had - highly recommended.

Had it on tap at Dulles airport in DC at the Old Dominion pub next to gate B14. Pours beautifully with a nice head. Slight sweetness with hints of vanilla and even a little chocolate. It is not overly bitter which makes it very easy to drink. It may be a little to sweet for some, but I am a big fan.

Pours a molasses color. No head or lace. Smell is smokey burnt wood and malt--exceptional. The taste is a little dry but its quite pleasant. It is also sweet upfront and finishes with a rich leatherry wood-like character. Maybe I can tell the Fall is coming because this beer seems to fit real well right now where it might not be as desireable in the middle of July. The mouthfeel is amazing--just like silk in your mouth. A little too much to have more than a couple of these but this beer is excellent. I like it a lot.

Presentation: A big, most impressive, 2L growler -- full with ceramic lock-top and metal handle. Available at the brewery only.

Appearance: Opaque, black with ruby dark brown hues around the edges. Beer foam is about two fingers in thickness, tightly carbonated and ultra creamy with a tan colour. Rests at a thin creamy lace that sticks.

Smell: Toffee, caramel, coffee, oak, vanilla and bourbon aromas.

Taste: A silky smooth beer in texture, with a full-body. Up-front the beer is acrid (black malts) with a crisp roasted/bitter quality. The sweetness that follows is well-balanced and complex as hell -- big chocolate, coffee and caramel flavours meld together to create a pleasing richness then vanilla, wood and massively distinct bourbon flavours follow and carry through to the end. As the beer warms, the bourbon qualities impart more flavours that come forward in the form of smooth alcohol fumes in feel, taste and smell. Grain tannin and more roasted flavours in the after-taste.

Notes: Fermenting Dominion Stout is set in charred oak barrels that have had bourbon stored in them for five long years. The beer is then stored for one week in the barrels, then transferred to kegs.

One of the more interesting, flavourful and complex stouts that I've had in ages. Just made the top of my stout list!

pours an almost opague black some lighted areas of ruby coloring.Thick creamy caramel colored heading.No lacing or legs at all and kind of flat looking.

Smell is heavily in favor of roasted malt followed by bitter sweet chocolate. Slightest of vanilla on the backend.

Taste of oakness hits you all at once at first. Followed by a very smooth dark chocolatey maltiness.Vanilla comes toward the end to add some creaminess and sweetness. Also there is a slight tasting of bitter hoppiness in the end.

Mouth is a little flat no real pop of retention. But it is ridiculously smooth and velvety in texture. Making this a little too smooth for school.

Easily drinkable and for sure a new handy beverage to have around the house.

German-style refillable growler filled at the brewpub.

First pint glass pours with a frothy 1/2" mocha head, which lasted faded pretty quick down to an uneven layer of bubbles, but laced beautifully. Opaque dark brown/black brew, with roasty dark grains and vanilla barrel filling the nose. Taste starts with sweet chocolatey coffee, mellows with vanilla notes, and closes with a slight vinous character. Mouthfeel and drinkability are very nice. Always a pleasure to have the chance to revisit this brew.

A deep dark brown nearing black liquid. No light penetrates any crevice of this one. Thick tan head with great retention, with sticky lacing.

Big vanilla, mocha, oak, black cherry, and roasty malt in the nose.

Rich creamy mouthfeel, about as close to a milkshake withough ice cream as you can get.

A coffee component comes into play in the taste. Like a latte, heavy cream, choclate covered cherry, good wood integration, and a finish of at least 45 seconds. Drinkable as hell if not a tad to sweet.

I was surprised to see this on the menu at Summits in Sandy Springs. Personally, I really love the oak/bourbon style of stouts. The aroma was very oaky, but not overpowering. Thhis was very easy to drink; very creamy with minimal carbonation. I hope that I can find some of this in a bottle. I could drink a lot of these on a cold winter day.

One of my favorite beers. Appearance? Like most Dry Stouts, but then the aromas of vanilla and rum, the creamy mouthfeel (nitro) and flavors of dry roast layered with vanilla, and that rummy sweet bourbon note befuddle my brain, and I become silent; secretly hating everyone else in the room that doesn't have one in front of them. The bottled and keg version for sale outside the brewery is purely criminal - no good.

This one pours from 12oz bottle(bottled 091907) a near pitch black with some reddish hues and a small tannish head of foam that recedes to a fine broken layer half way through the session but it has some good lacing.

The smell is of caramel malt, vanilla, chocolate, and bourbon. It's nice.

The taste has all sorts of flavours going on. Lots of vanilla and bourbon and wood with helpings of chocolate, roasted malt, a slight citrus bitterness in the background and it finishes witha nice hot cocoa bitter bite but..it's smooth as all hell and it doesn't hurt that it's only 5.2%abv; it makes it sessionable as hell. lol Man, is this son of a gun drinkable and velvety smooth. Great fullish mouthfeel and it's lightly carbonated. I like this one a lot!! Lots of flavour, easy to drink, smooth, this has it all going on. I'd get this one again, no problem.

This one pours a nice opaque black in the glass with nice a tan/brown head that has good retention. A perfect picture of a stout. The cocoa and coffee smells stand out the most in the aroma. Hints of vanilla and smokiness come through as well. The taste has a number of things going on with it mainly the roasted malts and chocolate followed by vanilla and espresso. This is a very tasty and ridiculously drinkable stout indeed. The mouthfeel is creamy and a bit thin, but this definatly lends to its drinkability. This is one beer I will keep a sixer of in the beer fridge as often as possible.

I asked friends in No. Va. to get a six of this for me back in April. Finally got my hands on it in November, so it was already nicely aged. Poured a drak murky burgundy under a purplish beige 1.5 finger head that settles fairly slowly, leaving nice lace rings. There's a good roasty nose with vanilla and chocolate notes. The mouth is quite prickly, yet syrupy thick. We've got marvellously smooth nut and chocolate flavors, with sweet caramel. The ever so slight hops presence breaks through the malt only late in the finish. Slightly dry aftertaste, but the lasting impression is mostly sweet. Recommend this as a very nice nightcap.

Found this beer for 10.99 a sixer at 3 Sons. Cheapest oak aged beer I ever found! Had this as my 3rd beer on a stout tasting night.

A - Pours a pitch black darkness with about an inch of head. Looks pretty rocking in

S - You get some chocolate, slight coffee, you can smell woody goodness, and then some malt. Doesn't smell too bad.

T - Man was I blown over with flavor! Starts off with a semi bittersweet coffee and then flows to oak barrel age wood (done very well to heighten the taste btw!) and then SWACK you get hit with a smooth vanilla bean taste that not only wraps it all up but leaves it with a sweet finish. COULD it get any better?

M - Surprisingly they got all this flavor and not a high ABV. Medium bodied and creamy.

D - Man where have you guys been all my life? I have been kicking around equally as cheap stouts and exposed to some that taste as good for double the price but I have no idea how they can just throw this at you with a 10.99 a sixer price tag! WILL be picking more up and WILL be having a few a sitting. In my opinion I fully agree with the bros "A" rating or greater all the way!

Poured a thick and creamy dark coco colored head. Aromas of peat, cream, coffee and roasted malts. Body isn't as thick as I'd expected, nice and solid though. Deep creamy chocolate malt flavor, a coffee bitterness, all cram into a smooth finish. Some layers of lace as the beer disappears. Seems a bit thinner than draft version, but a interesting quality brew.

7 months later, cellared in the closet (bottled March 25, 2004)
Head is sticky as hell leaving lace all over. Smells the same as before. Coffee flavor is more dry then bitter, otherwise super creamy chocolate malt, maybe a hint of whiskey/tobacco.

Thanks to Manekineko for the hook up on this amazing brew which I would otherwise only salivated over.

Appearance is pitch black with a teeny tiny cocoa head.

Aroma is dominated by bourbon and vanilla with some roasty undertones in the background. It could just be the vanilla but I also smell chocolate as well. So it is a quite dynamic vanilla aroma.

Tastes just awesome. Heavy roasted boldness with vanilla provided strong support and light bourbon notes to give it some zing. Initially it almost seems to have a tartness to it, but the finish is charred, sweet, and oily.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with some slight stinging on the tongue from carbonation.

Overall, quite drinkable and very interesting.

Into a snifter it pours a deep opaque black with a 2 finger khaki head that leaves a thin film for the remainder of the beer. Loose lacing dribbles down the glass. Smell is notes of coffee, raisins, and bittersweet dark chocolate. Taste is very smooth with an even balance of roasted malts that are not too overpowering. Very easy to drink. Very refreshing having an oak barrel stout that is not through the roof with a high ABV. Wonderful take on the classic stout style. Taste the oak a little bit, a tad more would be nice. Great brew though.

Dark brown bordering on black liquid. A rocky tannish head.

Coffee, vanilla, and chocolate in the nose.

Vanilla coffee taste. Just sweet enough to get you ready for the next sip.

Mouthfeel is silky.

A delicious brew that I will drink again. It could even be a session brew.

A- Pours a black body with reddish hues showing through the sides. About 2 fingers of a coffee colored head that doesn't show the best retention. Spotty lace.

S- Roasted malts. Bitter chocolate. Earthy acidicness from the oak. Also a slight hint of the vanilla.

T- Vanilla and eartiness up front. Very nice bittersweet chocolate come in a take hold. A little grainy alchohol comes through.

MF/D- Silky smooth on the tongue with its share of carbonation. Drinkability is amazing. Low ABV at 5.2% and great flavors for the style. It's by far the best of this style that I've ever had.
