Notes/Commercial Description:
We use smoked and peated malts to create an intricate malt foundation. Our method of dry hopping with vanilla beans and oak chips pushes the depth of this stout’s flavor spectrum even further.

Thanks to THECPJ for this one.

A: 2+ finger head that displayed decent retention with an appearance somewhere between creamy and soapy. Some lacing was seen atop this black bodied brew.

S: Oak is evident, some vanilla, with hints of dark chocolate malts. Subtle yet pleasant.

T: Subtle like the smell, but less impressive. Oak and vanilla barely make a showing and do little to elevate the tasting.

M: Fairly dry and thin for the variety.

O: Meh.

Poured from a 12 oz. capped bottle (Bottled 01/03/12) into a pint glass.

A vigorous pour yields a 2-finger light mocha-colored head that dissipates after a couple minutes to a thick dusting and thick foam ring. The body is a dark, near-black brown with slight traces of crimson when held to light. Some great lacing can be seen coating the sides of the glass with each sip, but quickly falls back to the beer.

The nose is filled with dark, roasted malt aromas. Notes of dark chocolate, cacao, charred wood, vanilla, and caramel all come through. However, it is a little difficult to properly dissect the nose as it is rather weak.

The first sip offers flavors of chocolate milk, cocoa nibs, and burnt caramel with overlying flavors of smoke and wood. Swallowing the beer brings forth flavors of white chocolate, vanilla, and toffee. As these fade, the smoke and wood flavors come out once more and combine nicely with the other flavors. Flavors of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans linger near the back of the tongue between sips.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation, this beer is a delicious sipper that begs to be gulped. The body is full and thick, gliding over the tongue like milk without becoming overly coating or sticky. The carbonation is dialed in just right as it does not present itself much (allowing the flavors to really pop) while really assisting in the swallow.

A: Served a clear, black liquid with garnet highlights with a tan head that settles nicely to a creamy layer. Great lacing as it goes down.

S: Char, roasted and burnt barley, coffee with cream, faint oak and vanilla. Hops are faint and earthy.

T: Somewhat sweet, clean, roasted and burnt barley is rich but not over bittering. Some coffee with cream flavor, milk chocolate, vanilla, and light oak tannins. All are smooth and well balanced.

M: Full body but not thick, smooth carbonation with a somewhat sweet finish.

D: The drink ability is in the balance of this beer, it goes down more like a porter and has a solid mix of flavors. Very worthy stout!!

From notes .On tap. Black/brown pour, tan head with small amounts sticking to the glass. Barrel dominates the aromas with some roast malt and cocoa. Taste is a good blend of all of these. Vanilla oak blended with some chocolate and roast malt. Finish with a twinge of coffee and vanilla. A little thinner than one would like for a stout. Nothing mindblowing, but very good for a "regular" stout.

Oak Barrel Stout pours a black color, with a small dark tan head. There are chocolate, and vanilla odors, with a hint of coffee. The taste is nice and full. Good blend of chocolate and vanilla, with hints of coffee, on a smokey malty, slightly bitter backbone. The flavors aren't overpowering, and blend nicely. Nice creamy consistency, great taste, easy to drink. Overall a fantastic stout, complex flavors, but put together perfectly.

12 oz bottle. Opaque black in my large Ommegang tulip. Finger and a half of fine khaki head quickly diminishes to a surface covering. Not much lacing really.

Sweet on the nose. Caramel, hints of oak and bourbon, dark roasted malt, vanilla.

The taste is also quite sweet, but it's not cloying. Vanilla and caramel on the front, with the roasted malt bitterness following. Warm, oak notes come out after that, on a velvety smooth finish with a hint of warm alcohol.

I'm impressed, but it might be a little too sweet for my liking.

Poured a pure black colour with a thin tan head.

The smell was of malts and tabacco smoke, maybe the smokey smell is from the oak.

The taste was of coffee, malts with some bitter hops.

The mouthfeel was OK but kind of on the thin side.

Overall it was a decent stout if unremarkable.
