Notes/Commercial Description:
We use smoked and peated malts to create an intricate malt foundation. Our method of dry hopping with vanilla beans and oak chips pushes the depth of this stout’s flavor spectrum even further.

2010 bottle

Initially head is short lived, leaves collar. Nice alcohol legs.

Oaky nose, some vanilla but mostly smells of a tree!

Pretty complex stout here. Vanilla dominates but doesn't overpower. Some oak, "nuttiness".

Mouthfeel is a little thin, kind of distracting. Lower end of spectrum of carbonation due to age I'm guessing.

Slightly oxidized but tasty none the less. Loved the vanilla aspect of this one, pleasant surprise. Thanks mikeyv35.

Laughably lame description of this on the bottle. Anyways...

A. Surprise, it pours black. Very black. With a half finger of light brown head. Lacing is pretty good and head is pretty tightly beaded. Looks really good.

S. Not much. Some mild vanilla and the tiniest hint of chocolate.

T. Some thin vanilla and chocolate. Lots of graininess. A weak sweetness is the dominant note. Seriously, Dominion?

M. Pretty highly carbed for style. Pretty flabby overall.

O. Singularly underwhelming in almost every way. This beer is thin, mostly flavorless, and is way too watery for a robust stout aged with vanilla and oak chips. I wasn't expecting much from Dominion, but I've definitely had better. Woof.

Label says dry hopped with vanilla but all I taste is smokey beer that is as dark as a Guiness. It has a boring label that's cream in color with a brown botlle. If you are into a smokey sharp stout this is a great beer for you. This is smokey whiskey and water.

The Oak Barrel Stout pours a very black beer that has a very thick, hearty and slow to settle head that lingers with a consistency of shaving cream. The lacing an thick as well and show properties that have raised my expectations.

The nose is more hops, a subtle tinge of pine and some vanilla, bread and nutmeg.

The flavor is powerful with a rich amount of hops that are immediately apparent and just short of overwhelming. Not as balanced as I was hoping for but not over kill either. This is quite the quaffable beer and a very enjoyable stout with strong notes of dark roast coffee , vanilla, caramel and tight bitter almost like a UK ESB. The oak flavors are so subtle I am not even sure if I can taste them. However they could be hiding in the other stronger flavors making them more rounded.

The mouthfeel is more watery than I expected for a dark stout which such a rich and thick head. But it is more than acceptable.

Overall a very enjoyable stout. I would love to have this one again.

12oz bottle (bottled 2/21/2012) into a snifter. Pours a dark brown w/ a thick frothy head, sticky lace.

Aroma: Faint bitter roasted malt, hint of vanilla

Taste: Not as roasty or dark as the nose. A little astringent, some oak.

Mouthfeel is thin, weak.

Overall, disappointing. More porter than stout.

A:
Excellent clarity with a deep ruby/garnet color and a medium tan head of fine bubbles that dissipates leaving just after a ring around the edge of the glass after about a minute.

S:
The aroma is a bit faint but what is there shows the oak and vanilla with aromas of vanilla, toffee and some carmel along with the roasted malt character an American stout. There is some diacetyl which is probably from the oak.

T:
Again the vanilla and oak are upfront with flavors of vanilla, toffee and cocoa initially. A pleasant moderate amount of coffee flavor in the middle and finish. There is a little sweetness in the beginning and middle while it eventually progresses to a moderately dry finish. Faint, nondescript hops flavors of citrus with a descent amount of bitterness thought out.

M:
The light to medium-light body is too thin for an American stout. The moderately high carbonation is appropriate and the bit of astringency probably results from the hops/malt bitternes and the oak aging.

O:
The oak and vanilla defiantly come through and are nicely balanced in a very solid beer but I'd like stronger aromas in the nose, more body and better head retention.
