Served in a 22-ounce mug. Dark chestnut colored with a dark beige dimpled head that sinks quickly but leaves a thin cap atop.

Aroma of oak and smoke, plus cocoa and a bit of brown sugar riding beneath.

Flavors of cocoa, molasses, and smokey charred bark. Definitely noticeable oak flavors throughout the gulp. Dark chocolate lingers.

Mouthfeel is tangy and tannic, puckering the cheeks slightly. The oak barreling seems to impart a certain flavor and dry mouthfeel that is just shy of detracting from the experience.

Pretty drinkable, but could be more complex and rely on the oak less.

Served up on tap, came cascading. Beautiful. It's deep ruby brown, with a giant foamy tan head that settles into place. The nose is sweet toasted malts and creamy coffee. Taste is smoky malts with hints of earthy fruits and sweet white vanilla frosting on the end. Mouthfeel is good and full. Drinkability is up there. Great brew.

A - Nice coffee black look with a soft tan head.

S - Coffee, chocolate, vanilla. Not the strongest aromas that I've ever experienced.

T - Again, the coffee, chocholate and vanilla stand out. I was a bit let down by the lack of oakiness. It is there, but not as strong as I was anticipating.

M - Soft and smooth. Lightly carbonated.

D - I can do a bunch of these. The flavors meld together well and one doesn't overpower the other. The lighter ABV allows you to have a few. Could use a bit more oak flavor but I'd still go for this one again.

Poured a mostly opaque black with some brown showing aroune the edges. No head and no lacing. The smell is mostly lightly scented with vanilla and a touch of grain. The flavor is very smooth and light with some light roastiness and detectable vanilla, but not a lot more going on. Very, very smooth mouthfeel- you could just suck this down like a glass of milk. Not the most interesting stout in the world, but refreshing for the style.

On tap at Mad Mex-Monroeville
A: Very dark, opqaue brown that displays mahogany and ruby-ish colors when held to light. Small head that shrinks quickly and remains as a semi-sticky ring, milk chocolate in color. Some decent lacing, but nothing to right home about.
S: Faint at times, but when a good whiff is had it displays scents of caramel, slight oak, a roasted, almost charred vanilla bean smell, and some well rounded bourbon scents. A sweet smelling brew that has a charred oak back bone.
T: Delicious and complex. Very little carbonation and sweet flavors of caramel, oak and roasted malts up front with sweet vanilla and bourbon flavors ending the sip. The bourbon flavors are not harsh, but are on the sweet side pairing nicely with the definate vanilla. A nice off-set to the charred oaky flavors up front. A nice flavor profile.
MF: Chewy and medium.
Overall: A delicious brew that exhibits a complex flavor profile. Nicely done carbonation. If the appearance were a little better this one would be tops. The flavor is top notch nonetheless. Definately worth a try and at the ABV, a few can be had.

Has the good fortune of trying this one at the brewpub in Virginia.

Glass is filled with a not quite opaque, deep, deep black liquid, with garnet around the edges. Deep khaki colored head doesn't stand extremely tall, but what little is here lasts a good while.

The aroma is understated wood. In fact, this smells exactly like ... wait for it ... a stout from a wood barrel. Go figure. There are toasty, spicy, almost cedary overtones to this. There's a little sweetness to the smell as well. I thought I had detected diacetyl on one sniff, but if it was there it ran away, as I could never find it again. Just the smell of a good English style sweet stout.

The taste is also quite woody, perhaps more so than any other wood aged beer I've tried. It's almost spicy from the wood, in fact. Even the aftertaste seems more akin to a pepper beer than to a wood aged one. There's little else to give away that this is a stout other than a very mild roastiness at the very end of the aftertaste, once the pepper flavors have died down. This isn't terribly complex, between the spicy wood and barely perceptable roast malt flavors, but it is good for the sweet stout style.

The body is thin, more like a porter than a stout, really. It isn't bad, but it could be more substantial.

This was interesting, to say the least. The beer really picked up the wood flavors, almost to the point of overkill. Again, it isn't a bad beer by any means. But it's not something I'd want to order over and over, either. Good for what it is, and worth at least a shot.

It came to me a fundamentally lightless black, velvety and dense, with a finger of light brown head that lingered at the edges for some time. Beads of lacing lay strewn across the inside of the glass.

The aroma was not as hefty as anticipated, but there was enough to denote roasted, burnt malt, coffee, black cherry, some smoky oak, and dark berries. On the fade, there's a mellow measure of vanilla.

Upon sipping, the flavor was also a touch thin at first, but it promptly sorted itself to bring charred malt to the fore, followed by a smoked whiskey wood combo along with some dark coffee bitterness and earthy cherry presence. A mild hop character emerged, softly floral and capably bitter on the downside. The finish was some residual roasted malt bite along with lingering hops bitterness, fading soon to a dry memory. After a brief scare, the flavor filled out to a full, down-to-earth bit of comfort.

Just short of medium bodied, it has a creamy feel on the palate that gives a nice counter to the earthy bitterness that rides in.

While not especially assertive, at least initially, it is still a very enjoyable, classy stout. The smokiness is kept tame but capable, and that's a pleasing touch in my mind. As it rounds out, the flavor is full and crisp in its way. The manageable ABV and rather refreshing nature make this nicely drinkable, with multiple indulgences virtually guaranteed. I'm glad I got the chance to try, and now I'm looking forward to my next opportunity.

A deep dark brown nearing black liquid. No light penetrates any crevice of this one. Thick tan head with great retention, with sticky lacing.

Big vanilla, mocha, oak, black cherry, and roasty malt in the nose.

Rich creamy mouthfeel, about as close to a milkshake withough ice cream as you can get.

A coffee component comes into play in the taste. Like a latte, heavy cream, choclate covered cherry, good wood integration, and a finish of at least 45 seconds. Drinkable as hell if not a tad to sweet.

Poured a dark brown with a thin head.
Smelt of smoky malt and molasses
Tasted smoky and oaky with hints of bitter grape seeds. It finished with a lacquer after taste.
The mouth feel was smooth and bubbly
I felt this was an ok blended stout. Not the best and certainly not the worst.

This beer came a phenomenally dark brown with a collar of thin, head.

Smelled like and smoky, much like a porter, with a slight bit of blueberries.

Tasted of very dry and clean with currants, red grapes and blueberries. This then picks up some dark chocolate and finishes with an awesome smoky, oaky blend that lingers long into the finish.

The mouth feel is light and extremely carbonated.

This a very light and easy beer for the style with a just a fantastic smoke/oak blend.

Wow, where the hell have I been? Under a rock evidently.
Picked this out of many brews on tap at Mad Mex in Pittsburgh. Poured a wonderful obsideon with a little light getting through. Thick foamy tean head.
I recenetly posted a rating where I compare an aroma to a chocolate malt. Where heres yet another. Are American microbreweries starting to impliment this taste variety? If they are its been too long coming. Damn this was a good aroma. Chocolate and cream, mild caramel and sweet malts, mild hops, alcohol. Not much coffee.
The taste was much of the same, with a great complexity and balance between sweet and bitter tastes, chocolate and sweet cream. The motufeel was very good as well, a sweetness and creamy smoothness balanced by alcohol and mild bitterness. Wonderful and wonderfully drinkable too. Hats off to Old Dominion.

A pretty solid Irish Stout. Pours dark as night with a thin head that dissipated quickly. The nose gives off vanilla, roasted malt, and a hint of coffee. Tasted solid, but not spectacular. Leaves a little to be desired in the mouth, almost slightly undercarbonated even for the style.

Overall a very drinkable Stout with some interesting flavors that make this a worthwhile try.

I was surprised to see this on the menu at Summits in Sandy Springs. Personally, I really love the oak/bourbon style of stouts. The aroma was very oaky, but not overpowering. Thhis was very easy to drink; very creamy with minimal carbonation. I hope that I can find some of this in a bottle. I could drink a lot of these on a cold winter day.

This is a good beer in bottled form, but exceptional on-tap.
Appeared an opaque, viscous black color with a soft, tan colored head that didn't remain but left behind some nice lacing. Aromas of wood, alcohol, vanilla, and roasted sugar seemed to come out very nicely. The taste was just an explosion of sweetness with a roasted/smoky character upfront and a honey & vanilla finish. The flavors of this beer on-tap are much more prominent and aggressive than in the bottled verison which is much much more subtle and gentle. The dominating flavors work very well together and generate a lingering sweetness that feels more like root beer or an ice cream float than a stout. I felt my tongue coated after every sip with an almost bready/chewy texture. So rich and so smooth I could have this all day, though eventually the sweetness might rot my teeth.

La Cave Du Vin in Cleveland had this on tap this week. I tried a small glass.

Looked like a run-of-the-mill stout (dark brown-to-black color, thin beige head, etc). But the flavors were a little more original. The biggest surprise to me was the vanilla bean flavor. I think this could have been improved by being made less thin and watery though.

Not bad, but not great. Just different.

On draught at St. James Tavern. This beer is a deep dark brown/black with a ruby halo and a thick beige head. Thick lacing as well. Great aroma of roasted coffee/mocha, chocolate and malt. Creamy body with a nice amount of coffee, vanilla and chocolate malt in the flavor, a tad more enjoyable than the bottled version. The finish is velvety smooth and has a smokey character along with some hops. Overall this is a pretty good Stout, easy to drink and very tasty.

dark in color, basically black with a nice 1 inch creamy off white/tan head that showed decent retention.
smell was roasty malts with hints of chocolate and caramel.
taste was sweet malt and caramel with hints of bitter chocolate
the mouthfeel was quite silky yet light in body. alomst too light to me.
all in all a very nice stout.

Served by circa.1750's bar maid at Shield's Tavern Williamsburg, Va. brewed in nearby Hampton Roads Va St. George Brewery. Very very dark color its head quickly becomming a light brown halo at edge of glass with a little matrix of lace. Complex aroma of roasted malts vanilla, chocolate and oaky Bourbon barrel. Tasted malt and burned barley (coffee?) A Bitter oak tannin finish that my son disliked but I found interesting. Some of this strong finish was off set by its heavy mouth feel. Nice body. At 5% ABV it would take several pints to turn you into a "Gigglenna" You will have a great time with this Stout.

Pours black with just a ring of light brown for the head. Leaves scattered lacing. The aroma is oaky, malty, and bourbony. I get hints of vanilla as well. Very nice aroma. The flavor is malty and chocolatey with the oaky, bourbon flavors coming out in the back. It has a smooth creaminess throughout. This is a top notch brew shared by StuBob.

DOBS pours an opaque black with no light shining through whatsoever. the pour i got had no head either. i suspect the bartender was at fault. a coffee roastiness quickly appears, in aroma and tasting. but then the chocolate kicks in. the beer actually tastes like someone has squirted hershey's chocolate syrup in it; reminded me of young's double chocolate stout. i enjoyed this, but my tastebuds would get a warped idea of what beer tastes like if i drank DOBS too much. at only 5.2% however, anyone who was very fond of the beer could put a few down without falling off their bar stool.

This is simply the best Stout I have ever put in my mouth! The head was nice and thick, and lasted the whole drink. The color was a beautiful dark black, just the way I like's 'em. The smell was awesome! It had abunch of things going on at once. First had a smell of butterscotch, then was vanilla, then malty with a tinge of alcohol. The taste was similar, but was more on the butterscotch/vanilla malt taste, with a slight hint of the hops. The drinkability on this one is way over a 5. It's a dark and heavy beer, but at the same time, it's not too filling, so you can put back quite a few of them.

Apperance: Served on-tap this beer is a deep brown with slight hints of red, meaning that it is somewhat lighter in color than say, a Guinness. Unfortuantely, my first came without a head, but my second had a nice 1/2" of fizzy tan that quickly subsided to thin lace.

Smell: Nothing too crazy here. A nice solid roasted malt smell dominates with some light cherry and vanilla scents.

Taste: A very good stout, all in all. This is very smooth and has nice light chocolate and espresso tastes that initally spring foth and then subside to allow an oaky, vanilla, cream soda finish to creep in and linger. You can tell this has been aged in oak, as there is a very wooden taste in the end, but it is in no way overpowering and perhaps even a little understated. The vanilla taste gets to be a bit much after a couple of these, but the nicely rounded character isn't really affected in a way that would deter me from buying this again. Just a nice solid stout.

Mouthfeel: Soft and approachable, this has very low carbonation even for a stout and a somewhat thin body. Very easily drank.

Drinkability: This is good. The beer is immensely drinkable, and the taste is so smooth it's like swallowing a silk hankerchief. The light mouthfeel make this an ideal session stout and the ABV is low enough to put them away easily. If this were as available as Guinness, I'd make the switch for my new fallback stout. AS a beer it's not earth shattering, but it is good.

This masterpiece pours nearly black with a tan bubbly head that lasts the entire pint. All kinds of subtle scents to pick up - deep earthy cocoa, roasted malt, honey, oak, & of course - vanilla. This stout tastes ridiculously good. Perfect blend of rich & fantastic chocolate malts with millions of complexities from delicate vanilla to roasted oak with hints of bourbon & subtle tobacco in between. This brew is full-bodied with a silky smooth milk-like feel. The finish is earthy with a perfect touch of bourbon. Simply spectacular.

came out of the tap thick and black, with a tan head that managed to leave the thinnest layer on top of the beer the whole time. deep roasted barley aroma mixed with charred oak and vanilla. soft carbonation makes for a very smooth and sturdy body. very complex flavors of milk chocolate, espresso, and a campfire smokiness are evident...unique to say the least. finishes with a touch of herbal hopiness and lingering burnt flavor.

quite a unique and complex stout, this one impressed me. my first beer from old dominion, i'll be seeking others out for sure.

From a growler, Dominion Oak Barrel Stout pours with minimal dark brown foam into a pint glass. The foam is rather coarse and sticks to the sides of the glass. Based on appearance alone, this looks to be a bold brew.

Bourbon (with its characteristic sensation of alcohol) and coffee dominate the nose. Bringing the aroma through to the mouth heightens the alcohol’s presence.

Like the nose, the first sip is almost all bourbon and coffee. Roasted malts come to play as the beer warms. As the beer warms toward the finish, this stout tastes more like a liquor/beer mixture than a pure beer. It’s unusual but pleasing.

This is a very fine beer. While I have difficulty treating it like a pure stout (it tastes more like an imperial stout, and given the aging process it would be better classified as a hybrid), I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try something quite unique.
