A big Meh on this one.

Pours black with a late developing off white thick head. The aroma is a little malty but thin. The flavor is roasted with cinnamon and oak, with a liquorish burn. The finish is spicy and oaky, but thin. Deep caramel with some cream. The mouthfeel is creamy but tapers off too quickly.

(Sure looked like a nitro pour, not 100% sure).

Appearance: what can you say about a stout? The beer is black, the head is tan and sticks around a while.

Aroma: dominated by oaky sweetness... rum or bourbon? Definitely one or the other.

Taste: again overwhelmed by oak and sugar, now I'm willing to commit to calling it rum. In fact now that it occurred to me, I'm having trouble tasting anything but rum. Sure there's some roast flavor somewhere in there, but it's taking a back seat to the oak flavor for sure.

Mouthfeel: Definitely full-bodied and creamy like a nitro stout should be. tha'ts nice at least.

Overall, it was hard to score this stout because the middle scores imply "average," which this wasn't. But the rummy oak flavor kind of clobbered everything else, and I couldn't really give it many more points on that account.

Poured aggressively, only a brief 1-finger head, reduces to almost nothing, almost no lacing, caramel head and black in color. Aroma of smoked malt, no oak and vanilla as stated on the bottle....although I haven't gotten to tasting yet. More aroma of chocolate and dark malts. Taste of a little smoke, chocolate, roasted malts, no oak, and only slight vanilla when breathing out while tasting. Even at 5.2% ABV, the alcohol is noticeable....aaand that sucks. I would only recommend this beer as a dark beer option for a get-together or party or something. Otherwise, I would not seek out this beer.

Very dark brown, almost black, with a medium-sized, khaki, frothy head with moderate retention. Smells of deep roasted malts. Chocolate, vanilla peat, wood and some light dark fruits. Taste-wise, wow the peat you right up front! Thick malts with vanilla and bitter chocolate. The hops are very subdued, just a little bit of bitterness on the finish, a bit lacking on the balance that the label brags about. It has a full body, lightly-syrupy-turning lightly-dry texture, and low carbonation. Interesting, but the smokey peat aroma and flavor are overdone and distracting.

Had this forever ago (just a tick), finally trying it again for a full review. Thanks to Jeff for the bottle. Like most stouts, deep-brown and black are the only colors to be found throughout the body; it's topped off with a thin tan skin - too weak to be called a "head", even after a fair aggressive pour. Carbonation issues, I wonder? I would expect a much frothier foam than this, especially at only 6.1% ABV.

Although the aroma isn't exactly off-putting or offensive in really any way, it's just kind of bland and mundane. It's carbon copied from the generic, basic "stout" profile and adds only a slight hint of oak. Dry cocoa beans, lightly sweet cream, tons of dry oak, and a touch of vanilla. I'll admit, the slight vanilla addition is nice, but everything is just so underwhelming and weak, that it's kind of hard for me to vibe on this.

A little more java and coffee beanery shows up on the palate, something that is certainly a welcomed accompaniment. Malts provide a light roast and a mild onset of cocoa in the periphery. Oak dryness plagues the background; much to my dismay, the vanilla is even more faint in the flavor than it was in the aroma. Just a dollop and nothing more; I feel it could benefit from a larger vanilla presence.

More roast and dry oak clog the aftertaste; the beer finishes in an uninspiring way and kind of leaves me wanting something more. The carbonation feels surprisingly lively, despite the egregious head formation from the start. Slick, oily and sharp mouth feel, although the body is much too thin for my liking, and especially for the style.

So apparently this beer used smoked and peated malts? I got pretty much no hint of smoke or meatiness here, unless you count the touch of oak throughout, but I'm sure that can be attributed to fermenting with oak chips. Overall, a basic and timid stout; kind of boring and uneventful, and while it's not "bad" by any means, it wasn't really enjoyable or tasty or different enough for me to seek out again.

The appearance inspired hope - dark brown to blackish, true to style.
The nose offered hints of vanilla it seemed, pleasing for sure.
Taste was a bit average, almost a let down compared to the appearance and smell. The hint of vanilla and oak did not distinguish itself.
Mouthfeel was akin to the taste - thin. I'd have scored it lower, but there was an upturn in the finish as i noted some taste at the end.
Drinkability for me on this one is tarnished by the thin mouthfeel, I'd not want more than one of these as there isn't enough in it to make it more than a starter effort.

The brew is dark brown, almost black, a high tan head, medium lacing and curtains.

Smelling of sweet chocolate, dates and figs.

More chocolate, milk chocolate on chocolate bread, oak chips, some lemon peel.

Medium carbonation, a bit flat, medium body.

Wonder if the oak really improved this one.

The Dominion Oak Barrel Stout, fermented with vanilla beans and oak chips, pours from the longneck bottle a nice deep, dark black with a small tan head that falls to a ring around the glass. Aromas of big vanilla upfront alongside a roasty, somewhat lactic chocolate. Some bitter coffee works into the mix and I can get hints of the oak as I inhale as well. However, it all seems to collide on the way to my nose.

First sip brings a dark roasted malt upfront with hints of cocoa and mellow coffee tones. The blast of vanilla flavor isn't far behind and works its way across the length of the palate. I get a bit of sour lactic twang halfway through each sip. Subtle woodiness is there but it's more of an afterthought in the brew. The vanilla gets to be a bit overwhelming for me.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a spritzy carbonation. It's a little thinner than I'd like for a stout, but still manages to carry itself well. Unfortunately, this really doesn't stand up against true barrel aged stouts. It's a bit muddled and somewhere along the line the flavors just don't do it for me. Check it out for yourself, as your mileage may vary.

Alright I had some high hopes for this one, but it did not really pan out as I had hoped. Pour was uneventful, thick black oil like, with no real head. Decent lacing throughout. Smell was very full, lots of oak, and bourbon aromas, and the vanilla is unmistakable, in fact pretty much over powering. First impression was not pleasant, it was vanilla overload for me, nad what the vanilla didn't kill the oak took care of later. Not enough carbonation left it feeling utterly flat and uneventful. Really had a rough time getting all of this down as the vanilla and oak were just overdone and killing it for me. Overall nah, I am good. I normally like oak aged beers, but this was overdone for sure and just not that pleasant

Gifted to me by shivtim, who liked this so much on tap that he brought me a bottle back from D.C. Pours very dark brown with a thin little head which is more of a thin little ring of bubbles than anything. Kind of unexciting-looking, esp. considering the name. Odor is strongly of chocolate with hints of vanilla and bourbon. Also some toasty notes. The vanilla odor worries me and for the first time i notice that this is aged with vanilla beans. Taste is heavy on the vanilla up front, with a transition to a toasty roated malt and chocolate. Alcohol is present in a slumbering bourbon quality and the vanilla is a beany ice-cream vanilla rather than a a fake "vanilla flavoring" one. Still, like a lot of vanilla-tinged beers, its very freaking distracting and i wish it wasn't there so i could just concentrate on the "bourbon" and "stout" parts of the beer. Also a little watery for the style, but well balanced. Not my favorite beer in the world, but im sure its better on tap. Thanks Paul.

Not bad. Poured nearly black with dark red around the very edges. Sandy coloured foamy head faded away in less than 15 seconds. Looked fairly average for the style.
Smell was quite lovely consisting of sweet coffee, English toffee, sawn old wood, and a hint of vanilla. Smells absolutely delicious!
Sadly, I found almost none of this in the flavour. Rather, an average stout with some dry roasted malty notes up front and throughout, nearly bereft of hop bitterness. The taste of a thousand other stouts, basically.
Mouthfeel was surprisingly thin for the style. You could do much worse, but I had such high expectations for this being a stout and having had oak chips and vanilla beans "marinating" in it. I'll definitely drink the other five, but I won't be rushing out to spen another $7,99 on another six.

A: Decent black color but after pouring vigorously no head to speak of.

S: Hints of vanilla and oak. Maybe some dark fruit

T: Im getting a decent amount of vanilla, just enough i would say. Thats about it unfortunately

M: Thin to medium, not smooth at all

D: By no means complex , still not bad if your looking for a easy drinker. Good price point for what you get i think. Not my favorite but wouldnt turn one down if offered, i left wanting a little more.

Pours a solid black color with a tan head. Aromas of subtle oak and vanilla are in the air. In the taste, chocolate and somewhat like mocha. An aftertaste that is a bit dry and leaves a coffee presence in the mouth. A lighter body than most stouts. A nice flavorful stout, I enjoyed the coffee/mocha/ vanilla flavor for dessert.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a snifter.

A: Really dark, still-looking, with little bubbling and no capping. A rich brown. Aeration gives a very temporary coffee-colored head.

S: Oak, vanilla, light coffee are all present. Slight roasty aromas linger about without asserting themselves overmuch.

T: Hershey's Dark Chocolate and vanilla extract. Oaky flavors are not as present as I expected. Roastiness reigns around the middle, as much as anything can dominate in this very mild beer. Coffee/espresso visits briefly, then leaves. Interesting flavors, but light, and not in an oak-aged way. Given that it was only oak chips that were used rather than aging in a oak barrel, I wonder if the lightness and mellowness is supposed to convey a faux-aged sensibility.

M: Mild, almost weak or watery. Does not have stout presence at all; feels like flat cola, if anything. Really a disappointment from a local brewery.

D: One of the only stouts I could describe as light and refreshing. You could easily drink this in summer--in fact, better than in winter. Not so much stout, as slightly husky.
