Notes/Commercial Description:
We use smoked and peated malts to create an intricate malt foundation. Our method of dry hopping with vanilla beans and oak chips pushes the depth of this stout’s flavor spectrum even further.

The Oak Barrel Stout pours a very black beer that has a very thick, hearty and slow to settle head that lingers with a consistency of shaving cream. The lacing an thick as well and show properties that have raised my expectations.

The nose is more hops, a subtle tinge of pine and some vanilla, bread and nutmeg.

The flavor is powerful with a rich amount of hops that are immediately apparent and just short of overwhelming. Not as balanced as I was hoping for but not over kill either. This is quite the quaffable beer and a very enjoyable stout with strong notes of dark roast coffee , vanilla, caramel and tight bitter almost like a UK ESB. The oak flavors are so subtle I am not even sure if I can taste them. However they could be hiding in the other stronger flavors making them more rounded.

The mouthfeel is more watery than I expected for a dark stout which such a rich and thick head. But it is more than acceptable.

Overall a very enjoyable stout. I would love to have this one again.

12oz bottle (bottled 2/21/2012) into a snifter. Pours a dark brown w/ a thick frothy head, sticky lace.

Aroma: Faint bitter roasted malt, hint of vanilla

Taste: Not as roasty or dark as the nose. A little astringent, some oak.

Mouthfeel is thin, weak.

Overall, disappointing. More porter than stout.

A:
Excellent clarity with a deep ruby/garnet color and a medium tan head of fine bubbles that dissipates leaving just after a ring around the edge of the glass after about a minute.

S:
The aroma is a bit faint but what is there shows the oak and vanilla with aromas of vanilla, toffee and some carmel along with the roasted malt character an American stout. There is some diacetyl which is probably from the oak.

T:
Again the vanilla and oak are upfront with flavors of vanilla, toffee and cocoa initially. A pleasant moderate amount of coffee flavor in the middle and finish. There is a little sweetness in the beginning and middle while it eventually progresses to a moderately dry finish. Faint, nondescript hops flavors of citrus with a descent amount of bitterness thought out.

M:
The light to medium-light body is too thin for an American stout. The moderately high carbonation is appropriate and the bit of astringency probably results from the hops/malt bitternes and the oak aging.

O:
The oak and vanilla defiantly come through and are nicely balanced in a very solid beer but I'd like stronger aromas in the nose, more body and better head retention.

Bottles 1/23/12. Poured into chalice. Deep brown; almost black. Deep tan thin head. Gone quickly, but this rim remains. Smell is very mild...roasted malts with a hint of vanilla. Taste is of roasted malts and vanilla. A bit of oakey/wood hits the palate with a sweet milky taste. The more it warms up, the more vanilla comes out in the flavor. A bit bitter finish, but works well with the sweet vanilla. Overall, a really great stout, and as a fan of vanilla brews, this is as vanilla as I ever had.

Poured from a 355 ml bottle into a snifter glass to a jet black colour (shades of brown around the edge of the glass when held to the light) and with a smallish tan head.

On the nose roasted malts, a hint of vanilla, a little coffee but not getting any kind of oak or wood hit which I was expecting!

Flavour wise I get roasted malts, vanilla, a little mix of chocolate and coffee, but again no hint of the oak for me. Good flavours though so not a major detraction for me!

Mouthfeel was excellent, creamy smooth and very drinkable, medium in body and limited carbonation.

Overall a good stout, but just not getting the 'oak' that I Was expecting!

Poured an inky opaque with a nice tan head that laced well.

Seems a bit muted with a roast malt dominence.

Roasty coffee vanilla bean goodness. A hair washed out, but good non the less.

Seems a bit thin and a shade watery, that said I like it enough to buy this again.

I suggest playing The Black Crowes w/ Jimmy Page LOUDLY while consuming this.

12 oz. bottle poured into standard pint.

A - Pours an opaque dark brown color with a two finger head that lasts for a while. Leaves a nice sticky lacing.

S - Aromas are mild. Some coffee, skim milk, and roasted barley. I really don't get any of the vanilla and only the slightest amount of oak.

T - The flavor is toasty, and I start to pick up some sweet vanilla as it warms. The flavors, like the aroma, are subdued.

M - Good carbonation and a medium feel.

O - The aroma and flavors are not very powerful, but it isn't bad. I didn't know anything about this beer or brewery but I wasn't overwhelmed. The price was right, though, so I would rate the value as strong.
