Notes/Commercial Description:
We use smoked and peated malts to create an intricate malt foundation. Our method of dry hopping with vanilla beans and oak chips pushes the depth of this stout’s flavor spectrum even further.

Oak Barrel Stout pours a black color, with a small dark tan head. There are chocolate, and vanilla odors, with a hint of coffee. The taste is nice and full. Good blend of chocolate and vanilla, with hints of coffee, on a smokey malty, slightly bitter backbone. The flavors aren't overpowering, and blend nicely. Nice creamy consistency, great taste, easy to drink. Overall a fantastic stout, complex flavors, but put together perfectly.

12 oz bottle. Opaque black in my large Ommegang tulip. Finger and a half of fine khaki head quickly diminishes to a surface covering. Not much lacing really.

Sweet on the nose. Caramel, hints of oak and bourbon, dark roasted malt, vanilla.

The taste is also quite sweet, but it's not cloying. Vanilla and caramel on the front, with the roasted malt bitterness following. Warm, oak notes come out after that, on a velvety smooth finish with a hint of warm alcohol.

I'm impressed, but it might be a little too sweet for my liking.

Poured a pure black colour with a thin tan head.

The smell was of malts and tabacco smoke, maybe the smokey smell is from the oak.

The taste was of coffee, malts with some bitter hops.

The mouthfeel was OK but kind of on the thin side.

Overall it was a decent stout if unremarkable.

Bottle dated 11-18-11. Poured into A Harpoon 100 barrel series glass at 58 degrees.

A. Very black body,no light shines through. Giant 3 finger tan head, dissipates fairly quickly down to a cap. Some lacing on the glass.

S. Robust oaky tones accompanied with strong vanilla notes, followed with milk chocolate and a hint of coffee. Also a prominant smokeyness present.

T. Just as the smell indicates, Lots of oak and vanilla. The smoke and roast balences out the sweet vanilla. Nicely integrated.

M. Feel is spot on for an American stout. Medium feel with a good amount of carbonation. Leaves a sweet roasted aftertaste.

Overall this is a well done American stout that is readily available. I will say that 1 is enough for me in a sitting. Pick one up if you see it.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Dark brown/black with three-finger, tan, creamy, foamy head that lasted a few minutes. Good lacing.

S: Oak, roasted chocolate and coffee. Mild.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness. Oak and vanilla exactly as advertised. Not sure I like it though. Vanilla carries through in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation and ridiculously smooth. I mean, this is smooth. Slightly warm too, which is nice.

O: This beer looks great and is so smooth, but the nose and taste are just above average in my opinion. Maybe I'm just not a fan of the vanilla. Still, good overall.

Ba Review #101
Served On: 01/05/2012
Glassware: Duvel Glass
Labeled ABV: -
Date/ Code: 10/19/2011

Scored this one at Frisco's in Frederick, MD. Thought it would be a great beer to enjoy on a cold winter night such as this.

Look: Poured a pitch black color with no light passing through. Head was 1-finger of a creamy tan froth. The Duvel glass really seemed to showcase the deep richness of this beer's color and aroma.

Smell: There were notes of sweet vanilla and charred oak. Also strong black coffee in the background.

Taste: The beer had a lighter creaminess to the mouth feel - not quite as full as I was expecting. Upfront was vanilla with a brief semisweet chocolate note. Middle was mainly of earthy roasted malts. Finish was a nice coffee bitterness. I did notice the complexity becoming slightly weaker towards the end as the beer warmed.

A little thin for the style - which was disappointing to me. Overall it was a very complex and satisfying stout.
