2009 Vintage. Poured into Tulip glass. No ABV on label.

Pours with a white head with good retention to the bottom of glass (25+ min). Sporadic, light lacing.

Golden in color with good clarity.

Prominent aromas of Bourbon and alcohol. Followed by fig?, dark fruits, leather and malt. Aromas blend very nicely with warming.

Taste follows smell with bourbon up front but not overpowering, if you like bourbon and beer, blends great. Followed by malt, fig, prune and a mild leather aftertaste with a sweet finish. Hides the alcohol very well. Again, as the beer warms the flavors seem to blend into a near perfect harmony.

Mouthfeel is good overall but the beer is a bit sweet with a slight coating feeling at end.

A great example of what loving aging of beer can do. I purchased this beer fresh, and really enjoyed it. The aged version is outstanding, nothing over the top, just a beautiful blend of flavors in a well crafted beer.

Some generous friend had brought this bottle to my house to share and sample, and we didn't get to it at the time. With a bottling date of 11/17/06, I imagine they had been saving this for an occasion, so I feel a little bad about cracking it open myself. Not bad enough to keep me from doing it, though.

Pours from the bottle with a murky, opaque, milk-chocolate brown color that is spotted by little bits of floating sediment. There is effectively no head whatsoever other than a thin ring that was generated by a vigorous pour. The aroma is quite mellow but pleasant, with the a combination of sweet whiskey, vanilla, and wood contributed from the barrel-aging dominating anything else. The flavor is again surprisingly mellow, especially for an 11.4% alcohol beer (must be all that age), but it certainly presents defined characteristics of caramel malts, bourbon, oak, and vanilla again. For as sweet as it tastes and how much carbonation it has lost over time, it's not terribly syrupy. Rather, it has a solid medium body that allows the flavors to linger appropriately. Overall, if I had to do it over again, I would have tasted this beer a few years ago, but I was glad to try it even if it is over-aged.

12-oz bottle served to goblet. Acquired as an extra from raveskdr back in September. The date on the bottle's smudged, but I think it is 4-2009 (perhaps 4-2007).

A: tawny brown, with darker caramel highlights. initial pour yields good amount of carb, considering the age, with 2 fingers of off white head. the head dissipates immediately however.

S: malts (caramel), dark fruit melded well with oaky vanilla. mild ethanol, peanut brittle

T: very boozy at first, but as this opens up to the air (and my palate acclimates), it is sticky sweet. little brown sugar w touch of dark fruit. the aftertaste's all sticky caramel, very pleasant

M: touch thin, but there's some sticky icky

i've drank more impressive bourbon-barrel barleywines, but this went down quick. was very happy not to get oxidation notes

Pours light cloudy brown with a small off white head fading immediately. No lacing or retention.

Lots of vanilla and bourbon on the nose. Booze forward although sweet caramel is present as well.

Sweet caramel up front. Vanilla is strong throughout and a strong bourbon presence is still there even after some aging although it has rounded out into a smoother flavor.

Light to medium mouthfeel with adequate carbonation. Booze contributes a lot to the flavor, but not really a lot of alcohol burn.

Not sure exactly how old this was ('08 maybe), but it's still pretty solid. A notch below some other commonly available versions of the style, but still something I liked.

Served in my Founders snifter.

Lightly murky plum-colored body. Thin tan head. Rather weak retention and very little lacing.
Smells pretty boozy... Loads of sweet malts; caramel primarily, and tons of vanilla. The flavor is quite boozy-- rather a bit too much so. The beer goes from overly sweet to high booziness with a big warmth filling my throat and chest. Feels rather syrupy. The booziness seemed to decrease as the beer warmed up-- which I found odd, but welcome.

Overall-- this isn't unpleasant at all, but perhaps I've had too many world class barrel aged barleywines... It feels like I would just take this one for granted.
Good beer, totally worth a try! I could see lots of people making this a regular purchase.

Dominion found several palates of this in their warehouse and decided to sell it late last year. Wish I had bought more than a case. 2009 vintage poured into my Bruery sniflip.

A - Light murky brown with great carbonation after all this time. Not only that, but these stupid things are screw tops. What stupidity. But it kept its carbonation fantastically.

S - First smell is a really amazing bourbon vanilla. From there you get some of the sweetness from the malt and slight nuttiness.

T - Nice carmelly malts right off the bat. The smooth vanilla from the barrel rounds out the back end of the beer. There is a slight sour twang on the back end as well, but has never been in any of the other 8 or so bottles I have had.

M - For an 11%+ beer, there is such little alcohol. The mouth is slightly light for a monster barrel aged barleywine, but it makes it very drinkable.

O - This is a really great beer. This was the last batch before AB came in and completely dicked Dominion up. They still haven't recovered. Not even close. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to get some of the original stuff at an amazing price, aged perfectly in the Dominion warehouse. Glad they decided to release it to the public. Kudos. I had a bottle of this from 2005 and it had fallen off, so I do need to make sure that I get through mine in the next 18 months.

Poured from '05 12oz bottle into snifter.

A:Thin, white bubbly head that disipated quickly. Cloudy, golden brown color.

S: Strong, malty, liquory aroma with a hint of oak barrels

T: Light, sweet, malty taste, that finishes with a slight hot liquor burn. Some barrel tastes towards the end of the sip.

M: Medium to full bodied feel. Well-carbonated despite the age and alcohol content.

O: A very good barrel-aged barley wine. I would have preferred to have it when it was a bit younger, but received this one as an extra in a trade.

Pours a light brown mahoghany in color w/ a skim coat white head that leaves minimal lacing. Aromas of oak, caramel/toffee, dark fruits, and a touch of bourbon. The taste starts off w/ massive oak up front, leading into caramel/toffeed, and finished w/ mild bourbon and an off putting flavor. I never thought I would say this, but the basement mustiness mixed with the bourbon and thinness of this brew, mixes to make a finish that is offensive to me. Medium bodied and lush. I was struggling to finish half a glass.

Overall, I was very disappointed by this brew that I was looking forward to sampling. Just has an odd finish on the palate! Will not be revisiting this one.

12 oz bottle poured into snifter. bottled on what looks like 040207 (April 2, 2007) even though i was told this was an '08...anywho on to the review:

A: pretty hazy/murky body that makes for an opaque brew. color is mahogany hued. head consists of a frothy rim of slightly off-white foam.

S: such a smooth vanilla. so smoooth. oak, toffee. brown sugar reduction. definitely getting some woody notes, but not really any booze (not sure if these were straight up virgin oak barrels or had something in them). raisins. great barleywine aromas complemented with the oak. well done.

T: not the upfront blast of sweetness i was expecting from this big barleywine. certainly sweet, but i was expecting more of a tangy sweet-plosion. im sure the time had something to do with mellowing that out. the middle gets a little scotchy. like an unsettling, unpleasant alcohol flavor that reminds me of the cheap shit. this is my only real complaint about the flavor.

M: carbonation is super mild as it should be. full body fo sho.

D: i feel like i got a fantastic bargin on this brew ($2.69/single bottle) considering the age as well as the flavor! most barleywines are around the price, throw oak in and tack a few more dollars on, throw oak and age tack on even more dollars. besides the deal i got, this is certainly a solid sipping brew that could probably sit around longer without spoilage. however, i dont see how the flavors could truly evolve that much more.

2008 vintage. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my Cigar City snifter.

a - Pours a hazy mahogany brown color with two inches of tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Head lasts for about a minute and leaves no lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of caramel malts, dark fruits, toffee, bready malts, molasses, oak, brown sugar, toasted malts, and light nuts. Lots of caramel and toffee and a little sweet, which is very nice.

t - Tastes of caramel malts, toffee, alcohol, sweet dark fruits, molasses, sugar, fruity malts, toasted malts, and bready malts. A little bit sweeter than the nose and some alcohol comes through here, but not bad for the ABV.

m - Medium to full body and low to moderate carbonation. Thick and smooth, and pretty creamy, with a touch of alcohol. Very, very nice for a barleywine.

o - Overall I thought this was a very good barleywine that has held up well over the last 3 years. Lots of caramel and toffee, and sweet but nothing too much. Also doesn't have too much alcohol in the taste which is nice. Would like to have again.

This was bottled on 11/17/06, more then 5 years old, wowza.
White half finger of head over a dark amber body, some haze going on.
The aroma plays the aged role in full, no alcohol at all, and little hops, both of which are normally in full force for an american barleywine. This makes the aroma simple and composed of dried bread, light faint citrus, and generous oak, it seem so far that the oak is staying around the longest.
The flavors are rounded out and grouped together, and have a slight oxidized note at this point but doesn't hurt this that much so far. There are caramel notes in here but they come across dryer then most barleywines after the years, and again light citrus from the little bit of hop presence hanging on, and the oak is strong on the palate. The alcohol is amazingly absent, i think a little more would be a positive addition for my personal palate, but i like em hot.

From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled on 17 November 2006

APPEARANCE: One finger, medium-thinner looking, light, off-white head with good retention. Murky burnt umber brown with medium carbonation. Head quickly recedes to a thin wisp and ring. Ring and splotchy, faint wisp remain but leave no real lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Definite caramel and toffee malt aromas with some light nuts and brown sugar. A good dose of oak barrel on this one, with oak, wood and nice vanilla undertones. A touch of booze in there rounds it out. Pretty good.

TASTE 8/10: Caramel malts, toffee and some earthy tones. Sweet brown sugar and some nuts as well. The oak barrel comes out at the swallow, with some nice oak and vanilla notes accompanying the malty sweet base. Some earthy hop bitterness lingers, but the aftertaste is mostly made of caramel and brown sugary sweetness and some nice oak and wood from the barrel. Flavorful stuff, and the booze is very well hidden.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Slightly prickly carbonation but smooth enough on the palate, but goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating on the palate. Only a touch of heat lingers on the palate.

OVERALL: Good beer and proves that barrel aged barleywines work fine for my palate. Though I’m not a huge fan of the style, the oak aging on this one was done really well and I quite enjoyed the bottle. The age has also done this one well I assume, as it is quite smooth and free of heat for the style. Would definitely drink again. Recommended. Thanks again Stakem.

Pours a cloudy brownish color with a small amount of tan head. Looks the part. Smells of faded hops, dark fruits and caramel - accompanied by oak barrel. The taste hits right upfront with big oak. The hops are largely faded, leaving only a bit drying the middle and the finish. This beer is surprisingly not all that sweet, with again, the predominant flavor of oak. I rarely say this, but I almost wish they would age a portion in oak and then blend it back down, as it is too pronounced for me. The tempered sweetness, bit of dryness off the barrel, smoothness and the hops really make this a drinkable 11.4% beer. The mouthfeel seems right on with lower carbonation and a medium / thick body. I do not have the original to compare this to, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was a totally different beer when fresh. My guess is that the hops balance the oak a bit more than now, because the level of sweetness doesn't. That said, if you are looking for an oak bomb, this is a good bet to make you happy. For me, this was good, but maybe not great.

Pours a slightly hazy copper amber with mostly no head. Bubbles hug the edge of the glass. The smell is fairly mild actually, some oak, malts, light caramel, andmaybe a little butterscotch. The taste has a profound alcohol presence, alot of sharp malt flavor, some caramel, and the oak was noticeably present as well. A little bit of dark fruits, more on the sweet side, arrive in the finish. Pretty nice beer.

I was a fan of the Millennium when it first came out, but I'll have to admit that I thought it could have been better. It was aggressive and I didn't feel it had enough malt girth and depth of character to match its clear alcohol content (found in both the aroma and the flavor). It changed over the years, but it always came back to roughly the same beer it always was.

This, however, is considerably different. The alcohol that I found before is toned down quite a bit (although transferred to something else), and it adds so much wood and vanilla character to it that it becomes a completely new beer - what was once lacking a bit of character and a touch off kilter is now more than fully complete!

The label states it's aged in oak barrels, and that's interesting. It's time consuming, a bit more difficult to do, and certainly more expensive than just tossing some oak spirals into a stainless steel tank. I appreciate that they've gone to the extra effort, unlike the Oak Barrel Stout, although I'm not actually sure it's really worth it in this case.

I used to buy a case of barleywine (Old Foghorn, Bigfoot, etc.) each year and put it away in the basement for the occasional nip as it aged. I haven't done that for many years now, but I think this one has inspired me to start up again!

Poured from the brown 12oz twist off into a large snifter able to hold the full bottle. Bottled on 11/17/06

The beer pours a hazy murky medium amber w/ a quick dropping beige cap even with a semi vigorous pour. The head collapses to a ring w/ minuscule beading and lace clings lackadaisically. The aroma is creamy and caramel drenched with lots of floral and sweet odors with a mild oak and slight scent of dried fruit with mild vinous scents and hints of plum and apricot with mild spice. The light alcohol ester enhances the aroma w/ mild vanilla odor. The feel of the ale is smooth as silk with mild heat and light toasted sweet texture w/ a mild carbonation level and bitterness is subtle with creaminess from malt and subtle oxidation w/ slight spice and residual sweetness.

The flavor of this is wonderful with vanilla and fruit w/ oak prominent and strong caramel presence with light sherry taste from the subtle aging. The hops add some spice or could be the alcohol with mellow pepper flavors and nutty wood element with hints of dark fruit like raisins and dates w/ mild pine in the flavor too. There is a light brown sugar flavor that is contributing a light molasses element and sweetness to the overall taste of this strong beer. I enjoy how the vanilla from the oak and sweet fruitiness blend so well and create a nice balanced complexity. I found this ale to be aged well, but not past its prime at all, a wonderful barleywine with finesse and the oak barrel provides a lot of complexity with a taste that is nothing like the 11.4% listed. I really enjoyed this 4+ yr bad boy so much, thanks again Adam!

Really enjoyed the regular version, so have been looking forward to this one with more than the usual lip-smacking.

Pours a dark, warm, almost woody red. Contrary to it's non-barrel-aged cousin, this displays no carbonation, no head. The smell, however, is spot-on. Dead-ringer bourbon, vanilla, with a good foundation of malts. Instantly reminds me of the '09 Central Waters Barrel Aged Barleywine, one of my all-time faves. That's a lot to live up to.

Until I smelled this, I assumed it was oak-aged vs. barrel-aged, so this was a surprise. Let's lay this to rest right away: I knew the CW BBBW '09, & this ain't no CW BBBW '09. The bourbon is ascendant, but the base beer seems to have suffered from its rough treatment. It's flat & bitter, & not in a good way, clashing oddly with what's initially a nice blast of bourbon. Oxidation creeps in; I have to wonder if the screw-off cap had something to do with it. Wet cardboard mocks the sweetness & vanilla, rendering it nearly undrinkable.

The base beer, which is so good, has been rendered undrinkable here. Since it never shipped, I have to blame the top. Too bad. The smell was terribly promising.

Appearance: dark gold almost red, no head to speak of

Smell: bourbon upfront followed by caramel

Taste: not surprisingly there is a strong bourbon taste. high ABV is not too well masked. also strong sweet tastes possibly cherries.

Mouthfeel: low carbonation, very smooth

Drinkability: surprisingly drinkable for such a high ABV, would get again for sure.

Pours a muddled/cloudy color with a tiny off white head. The head faded quickly, but left a nice lingering lacing.

A distinct aroma of bourbon is up front. As the aroma hits your nose, there are some other follow up aromas as well, these being some caramels, spices, and maybe even a hint of cherries.

Taste of bourbon, caramel, and spices up front. Its a great flavor with that bit of a warm alcohol feeling in the middle. It closes with a nice crisp, earthy flavor that makes you want to have more.

This is very heavy, solid beer that doesn't have a high carboniation. But it isn't flat either, its a great sipping beer. High ABV would knock some out after one bottle, but this is a great brew I would love to get my hands on again. I would like to try other years as well.

Bottled 11/17/06

Big thanks to Jettanbass9 for sending this one my way. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a snifter.

A- Pours a clear, dark amber / burgundy color. Produced a fingers width of off-white head. Dissipated pretty quickly.

S- Lots of malt candied sweetness. Notes of caramel and citrus type fruits in their as well. Very aromatic.

T- Falls short of the aroma and just never really came together. Upfront the candy sweetness and citrus flavors collide...there's almost a tart, sweet flavor underneath. In the second half, oak definitely comes into play with a slightly alcoholic finish. Just not as cohesive as one would hope and some of the flavors were just off.

M- Medium bodied with good carbonation. Left the palate on the dry side.

D- While this was nearing 12% abv, the alcohol was not that noticeable. A slight burn did develop in the chest throughout consumption.

Overall, a decent barleywine by Dominion. Would have liked to try this one fresh to compare.

Another 12'er I am pretty sure is from Vintage Cellars order a long while back... sharing this one with Brenda... mine is from my Delirium goblet..

1/2" head.. no real lace or cap.. the brew is darker than the previous bottle.. copper .. verging on lite brown... a bit hazy from a sloppy pour.

Nose shows bunches of caramel with some minor oak and maybe some vanilla.. a touch of cardboard...

Flavor shows more oxidation than I would have expected.. again.. tons of caramel... maybe butterscotch, but that could be some some oxidation playing with me.. oak plays much more in the palate.. so does some pretty prevalent vanilla as it warms.. white raisins?.. burps show there is still a bunch of oak.... tannic.. I swear there are some citrus hop elements there, but this seems like a completely different beer than the one I had an hour ago... Brenda says it tastes like tawny port.. I guess I can see where she's coming from.

This is another one that I've had my share of times over the years.. but I am really enjoying this more than I remember other bottles.. very interesting and very complex... remarkably drinkable.

Pours a cloudy turbid brown color with a tiny off white head and a sharp ring of lacing. It looks a little unappealing.

Scent of sweet bourbon, caramel, cherries, sugars, and some oxidation. This has held up pretty well, but the oxidation is a bit too noticeable.

Taste of bourbon, caramel, sugars, earth, and a hint of spice. I would prefer to have the regular product to compare to, but right now this is tasting very bourbon forward. I'm not sure how much longer this will hold up, but it tastes pretty damn good right now.

Mouthfeel is medium heavy bodied and has a very low carbonation, but not flat.

12 ounce brown bottle that appears as though it was air-brushed black as an extra measure to keep the light away from this beer. It pours a clear amber color with a thin lace of yellowish creamy tanned head that is quick to dissolve to just a thin line around the interior perimeter of the glass. Little bit of lace clinging to the glassware is the only evidence of my first sip.

Nose is a wonderful blend of sweetness that includes smoky oak, vanilla, malt and alcohol. It really is an appealing and enjoyable aroma.

The drinkability would not lead you to believe this is nearly 12% abv. Smooth and easy drinking, low carbonation and medium feel. Taste is minorly bitter upfront, with malty sweet caramel notes, oak, vanilla and a warming tingly finish. Lingering taste of hop bitterness blending with a fruit (almost like tart grapes) is left on the palate along with mild smokiness. The lingering bitterness makes you want to dive right in for another sip of the malty sweetness.

Really loving this beer. I have a few more to selectively share with friends and possibly sit on in the cellar for a little longer. Fantastic.

Here we are a year later. Let's see how this brew is holding up.

Poured into a snifter from a twist off, yes I said twist off capped 12oz bottle. The brew pours a would be clear amber color only I let some sludge from the bottom of the bottle find it's way into the glass. These dark particles hang in suspension all through the body and bubbles of carbonation rise constantly to the surface from imperfections in the glass. Initially there was a thin cap of white head which dissolved fairly fast. All that remains is a thin line of bubbles around the perimeter of the glass.

The nose of this brew includes a sweet scent of caramel malt along with mellow vanilla and some oakiness. There is a light whiskey influence that hangs out in the background but an overall strong alcohol scent still remains in this brew. This barley wine smells pretty much exactly like I remember and I love it.

The taste includes a nice punch of alcohol heat right up front that is reinforced by whiskey. It is slightly solvent and includes a modest amount of hopped bitterness. The malt tastes slightly nutty and has a wooden tastes that flows into the finish. This is significantly more earthy and bitter tasting than I remember. It has a light oxidized character that blends with a faint amount of vanilla sweetness through the body.

This brew is medium to full bodied with a modest level of carbonation. This offering has changed a bit since the last time I had this (or maybe my palate has matured over the last year.) So to keep current with what my opinion of this brew is, I have dropped my review score by .10 points as outlined above.

Poured a reddish, darkish brown tint, cant explain it but it was different. The vanilla was strong on the nose and carried through the taste and swallow. Just right. The bourbon was just strong enough to notice but not overpowering. Barley was strong, taste was bold and pretty chewy I thought. Tasted like a mix of fruit, flowers and raisins. Very good barleywine.
Just polished off an 06 and it was still very strong on the ABV. This beer could actually hold out for another two years! Very good.

A 12 oz bottle courtesy of, well, no one. I must have picked this up somewhere but I can't recall where. It was bottled on 17-Nov-06, making it almost 3 years old.

A: The barleywine has an amber brown hue, lightly golden but dark enough to leave only shadows on the other side of the glass. Not much head, but what rose up did lace.

S: A firm malt body shares centerstage with the oak barrel. Woody oak is a nice touch, adding a subtle sweetness to the barleywine. Not much hopwise.

T: Oak is prevalent upfront, adding a sweet vanilla and wood flavor to a barleywine that is thick and malty. The barleywine seems to have aged well, taking on a mellow body that isn't too malty or oaky. While neither flavor dominates, both work together in a cacophony of enjoyment. They provide a depth that brings out citrusy hops even after 3 years. The citrus explosion is unmistakeable, and its interaction with the oak is very pleasant.

M: All barleywines should taste this good. The malts and hops remain lively and the oak barrel adds depth to the taste.

D: Almost 12%? I'll be lucky to get through this bottle. Tomorrow morning may hurt.
