Bottle from Giant. Flat, dull pour, faint aroma. almost non- existent. Hoping for so much more here, but no to be. Kind of plain, and underwhelming. Generic maltiness, some roast grains. Nothing that screams Baltic Porter. Barely even a normal porter.

Appears a hazy, dark auburn with a small, light tan head that quickly fades into a mild cap and collar. Spotty bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of toasted nuts, cocoa, caramel, and fresh bread.
Taste is of coffee, toasted nuts, cocoa, caramel, baked bread, and a touch of figs.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, spritzy up front, and smooth in the finish.

This poured an opaque mahogany with a little tan head. It smelled like dry roasted barley, burnt cocoa, raw leather, wild yeast, and some alcohol. It tasted like roasted coffee and burnt cocoa with rusty copper hops and some wild yeast, and a bit of charcoal. It was very thick with moderate carbonation, and had a bitter aftertaste. Overall this beer had decent flavor and great body, but they didn't seem to match each other nor the style. The body was very heavy, which I typically like in a beer, but it wasn't fitting for a porter. And the flavor wasn't sweet or creamy enough for such a thick beer. It still tasted clean and wasn't difficult to drink, and it seemed like it might benefit from some age. But fresh, it was somewhat disappointing.

12oz bottle into nonic.

Pitch black with only the slightest hint of ruby edges toward the bottom. A one finger tan head slowly settles to a thin rim along the glass, leaving behind stringy lacing.

Deep roasted malt aromas with a little bit of chocolate. A slightly chalky aroma is in there, hard to put my finger on exactly what it is. Like on the label, a little bit of licorice is in there if you search for it.

Roasty malts again with a little bit of the licorice adding some subtle spice to the beer. A little bit of hop flavor comes through toward the end. Full bodied.

A decent Baltic Porter (and yes, this one is bottom-fermented). I'd say the licorice is the unique characteristic in this one.

a: into my snifter, light head of milky coffee and low retention, dark chestnut colored beer

s: smells of quality, cold light-roast coffee, burnt nuts and dry cocoa, husky roasted barley, light and crisp hop aroma, clean aromas of a well-roasted lager

m: moderate carbonation, medium body, turns a bit creamy after a few swirls release the excess effervescence

t: the roast really opens up on the palate, with rich light-roast coffee spiked with bittersweet cocoa, very woody and smoky, ends with just a glimpse of sweet chocolate flavor before turning moderately bitter in the long and roasty finish, quite nice

d: very easy for the abv, which is nowhere to be found

overall: much like the Victory Baltic Thunder, this is a less powerful, more lager-y version of the style, and it works well

First of all, this will probably be the last locally-brewed seasonal offering from what we have known and loved as Old Dominion beer brewed in Virginia. Word is out the brewery will be closed, and production will be moved to Dover, DE where other "Coastal Beverage" beers are made. This winter they have brought out the Baltic Porter again, but it tastes better this time. Very dark brown - used motor oil color with a fuzzy, loosely bubbled light tan head. Nice aroma of mocha, cocoa, and maybe cherry pipe tobacco. A nice roasty flavor giving out lighter notes of coffee and chocolate without undue bitterness in the malt. At 7% the beer is light on its feet and goes in and down rather easily with a little acidic bite on the finish. Although I am not happy with how things have turned out for this brewery in general, I am happy to put the past behind me and see them off enjoying this - their most likely last great beer from a formerly great brewery.
