Pours a deep dark black absorbs all light no ruby highlights to note, big mocha tan head forms thick and lasts awhile, fine speckled lacing left behind. Aroma has big notes of milk chocolate, creamed coffee, a bit of acrid acidity from the coffee roasts to boot. Flavor really stays balanced not overtly sweet or killer with lactose sugars but there's a not of creamed coffee, dark roasted malt base with the bitter dark espresso adds to a nice robust finish and each sip is a bit smoother going down the last. Alcohol flavors add to the complexity and I believe at 9% I would say it's well hidden in this sample...a brewery I used to recognize as a Virginian Old Dominion staple is now brewed and bottled in Dover, DE. This is part of a series they released with WWII era pinup girls and of all the labels this is the most likely that would actually be hanging on your wall. Mouthfeel is smooth a bit of creamy textured dark chocolate with a balanced bitterness from the dark roasted malts/coffee additions, carbonation is natural and the alcohol warmth doesn't overwhelm but it's sure to warm you during the polar vortex we are currently experience. Overall, I'm very impressed with this offering comparing it to the Double D DIPA that I tried, which I found to be sugary and not fermented out all the way.

Old Dominion Brewing
Morning Glory

Pours a dark brown color, good clarity though dark, with an off white creamy head and plenty of lacing.

Aroma of dark malts, chocolate and a bit of coffee. More coffee pulls through the aroma as the beer warms.

In the taste, vanilla, roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolates. The coffee flavor is there but could be more robust. Of course, all the flavors work with a small heat on the back end. Enough bitterness to be in no way sweet.

Medium bodied but surprisingly light given the strength. Smooth yes, full, not quite.

Overall, a nice strong beer with mellow coffee and big malt, but with a thinner body. Ive been trying to check this out for a while, and it is who we thought it was. Drinkable, approachable imperial stout brewed with coffee beans.

Let me bring in another full review of this Virginian born Russian Imperial Stout. Poured this out of a 12 oz (355mL bottle) into a standard pint glass.

A: Body is black as the Russian night north of the Arctic Circle. Black. Head built up after the pour, then receded pretty fast. Never got bigger than one finger, after recession it looked like the foam on a cup of espresso...imagine that. Lots of sticky lacing to the glass.

S: A deeply pleasing aroma. Distinctly an imperial stout with strong aromas of roasted grains and malts, dark espresso, and hints of dark and bitter chocolates. The smell seems dry, like there is a bit of char.

T: This is a straightforward Russian. A bit tough at first, but warms up quick...like any Russian if you've ever met one. Warmed up it is easy to drink, the flavors smooth out and get better and better with easy drink. This is a manly beer, there are no fruits or florals in this, it is all the way grain, malt, coffee, char, and bitterness. The bitterness at the end cuts off the sweetness, and keeps you ready for more.

MF: Not extraordinarily thick, but this is not a thin beer. There is a decent amount of carbonation to keep things balanced. The beer feels slightly oily on the palate, which is odd considering the dryness you should expect, nevertheless it adds to the drinkability of the beer.

O: Pretty damn awesome RIS offering from the fellas down at Old Dominion. Smells like its gonna beat your mouth in with huge alcohol and lots of sweetness and bitterness, but this beer is well balanced, and super drinkable. Some things could be better, but as is, this is quality beer.

Thrilled to be among the first to review this great RIS. Well done.
A: I get a lasting head with stained glass lacing. 4
S: I get a deep range of malt, roasted grain, wood, espresso, a bit of char. All good. 3.75
T: It's a welcoming, approachable, uncomplicated RIS with a nice balance and a long tingly finish. It's up there with the better RIS, more wood than fruit, more masculine, fireplace, split wood, than fruit and flowers. The sweetness (of which there is plenty) is well balanced by the long bitter end. 4
MF: Maybe thinner than the greats, but a great finish and a nice balance. Leaves you in a great place. 3.75

O: Surprisingly good RIS, and yes, a sexy, strong RIS. I'd happily trade, age, share, blend, and drink again. 4

Picked this up for $2.29 for the single. Into a pint glass

A - Seems pretty viscous with a deep dark blackness. Head is minimal with just a 1/4 inch that settles to just a thick lace ring.
S - Grainy with milk stout dryness. Has some strong coffee smells and maybe some chocolate smells.
T - Has some sweet lactose sugars, has solid coffee flavors not bitter but balanced with a vanilla like flavors. Milk chocolates abound but overall grainy. Not bad.
M - A bit thin bodied for such a high ABV beer. Could use more body.

Overall its a very easy going stout with coffee flavors but it could be better. For 10 dollars a four pack its not bad.

Nice appearance in the glass. Thick and luscious. Big head, lots of tiny foamy bubbles, good lacing all the way down. Pleasant espresso coffee ground flavor, but just a little chalky for my taste. Not a bad example of the style, but somewhat pedestrian from my perspective.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pitch black with just over a finger of a rich brown fizzy head, a few tangents of tight smaller lacing.
S - This is what I dont get, there's not a powerful aroma here to start things off well. A little smokey and sweet toffee malt, some lighter graininess, medium scents of roasted coffee.
T - Fortunately the taste picks up things a bit. A smooth blend of mild roasted coffee and espresso with a rich toffee malt, some nuttiness to it, a touch of caramel and vanilla.
M - Not super thick, but chewy, and definitely some alcohol burn, slightly creamy and smooth.
O - I wouldnt drink this if you get heartburn, I mean this is burning me up pretty decent, and I hardly ever get these side effects, but for what it is, its a great coffee beer infusion, the flavors aren't at their peak, but they're very smooth and rich. Would gladly partake of again.
