When I picked this up I didn't even realize it was an OCB brew and I was equally surprised to find that it reminds me so much of Rogue's Hazelnut Brown.

From the pour it's not a great looking beer.. just a dark brownish ruby red with next to no foam on top. Appearances can be deceiving though so keep reading. The smell is also fairly muted but there is some hints of what's in store.. nuts and toasted malts. The taste though is where it's at. BIG nutty flavour, roasted malts and a very tasty dark chocolate finish. This is really enjoyable in the taste department and goes down in gulps. This would make a really good fall beer and is a great alternative to Rogue's Hazelnut Brown in the taste dept.

Mouthfeel is decent.. smooth and lightly carbonated. Drinkability is good. Having another is definitely in the cards.

Purchased at the LCBO after seeing it for years. Just under $3.00 for a 473ml can like usual. Served at 7deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours a nice head that dissipates in a minute. Dark for sure

S- Not the best but nice caramel and malt.

T- Malt bomb pure and simple

M- Good considering it's a single minded beer

O- Pretty good. Won't buy again though

Food Pairing

This ok beer went well with... Pork Ribs. Seasoned and braised in the oven

Enjoy

Re-review of this beer after picking up a 473 ml can from the LCBO.

Appearance - Cola brown pours into pint glass giving rise to 1/2 finger of off-white head which dissipates quickly. Beer itself is deep ruby red when held up to direct light.

Smell - Chocolate, kiss of cherry, slight bready malts. Maybe a few other dark fruits thrown in. Focus is definitely cherry and chocolate.

Taste - Slightly boozy dessert, fruit filled dark chocolate. Slightly bitter aftertaste. A touch too boozy for my tastes after initial fruit explosion up front.

Mouthfeel - Medium finish and carbonation, with a certain richness to it that clearly indicates "This is not a light beer." Nice smooth feel in the mouth.

Overall - Not sure what the problem on why I didn't enjoy this last time, whether my tastes have changed, or whether pouring this into a glass made that much of a difference. Pretty damn good beer, but restricted to no more than a couple.

Special thanks to cattersley for sending this brew out west.

A: Clear dark brown with slight ruby hue when held to the light. Minimal light tan head which dissipated rather quickly leaving traces of lacing.

S: Brown sugar together with caramel and molasses, dried figs and hints of toasted nuts.

T: Sweet syrups of molasses, caramel, toffee and maple syrup with background notes of dried figs, toasted nuts and yeast. Very subtle bitter notes of hops in the finish.

M: Smooth light to medium bodied with mild carbonation.

O: This is a very malt forward beer with great flavours of caramel, molasses and dark fruits. The lack of any noticeable hops leaves this somewhat unbalanced.

473ml can purchased as a single from the LCBO booth at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" tan head over the slightly cloudy reddish brown brew. Head recedes gradually, with average lacing. Aroma is worty with maybe a slight tartness.

Taste starts with ample grain character, a light fruitiness in the middle, closes soft and clean. Mouthfeel is smooth, and drinkability is good. Could be a nice regular drinker.
