This was a Pyramid fall seasonal. The usual mixture of light brown, dark red kind of appearance. 1/3" beige/off white head, below average retention. Smells like fall, leaves, earth, crystal malt.

Taste actually offered a bit of a hop kick unexpectedly, thankfully(?). Nothing major, just a lil kick in the malty pants. Mix of caramel, cascade, hearty earthy breadiness lightly toasted. Maybe some Vienna malt. Hint of metal bitterness, and I don't mean like being upset about Slayer. Carbonation was fine. I remember I held on to one of them for like 3 years and it still tasted pretty much the same.

In some ways, this was like a red ale and winter welcome ale hybrid. A little stronger than your average red ale, a little weaker than your average winter welcome. Its a gateway kind of malty beer for people upgrading from the land of AAL yellow.

I had this in Oct.2014, when I wrote down these notes which I failed to add on here till now but which I am copying here.

This was red amber, small off-white head soon thinning to ring and wisps.

Aroma was good but simple caramelly-toasty malt and some mild earthy-grassy hop.

Taste is orange, earthy-woody hop, caramelised bread crust, good sweet-bitter balance, simple but enjoyable and well-rounded enough to maintain interest.

Pours a mostly clear brownish copper into Spiegelau IPA glass. Well-retaining, light tan head. Smell is inordinately sweet. Plums, raisins, caramel, barely bready. Maybe a little alcohol/esters, no hops. Not bad, but leads me to think it will taste a little too off. Luckily, that is not the case. More so bready on the palate, but caramel and dark fruit as expected. Just the slightest vegetal, almost peppery retro-olfactory hop burst as it nears back of tongue. Finish itself is surprisingly crisp, given its age. Medium-bodied. Medium level of carbonation, even though I was expecting either effervescence or flatness right off the pour. Still, it does eventually get quite flat and watery.

Not quite sure why there are no reviews more recent than 2011. I picked this up in a mixed 12-pack last year. Yes, that makes it "old," but not that old!
