12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A- Clear copper color with a finger plus worth of off-white head. Head dissipates into nothing. Have one snake looking lace on the glass. No visible carbonation.

S- Very light citrus hop smell. A little tropical fruit/candy smell. Not getting much malt. Nothing that woos me off my feet.

T- Smooth malt start followed by a mild bitterness. Is extremely subdued all the way through. The back of the beer provides a nice piney bitterness. Is not hot in any manner. Straight forward and nothing that overwhelms.

M- Light body with minimal carbonation. Kind of flat. Slight bitter lingering taste.

D- The price is right. I think I may pick it up for friends that prefer mild IPAs. I will probably pick up a few more to try again in the future. Hard to pass up a Imperial IPA at $1.70 a bottle.

Bomber bottle poured into a tulip glass, colour is quite a dark caramelly brown, a bit orange, slight head but good film and lacing on it. Completely clear. Smell has lots of grapefruit and lemons, caramel malt has an impact, some piney character, quite rich. Taste is characterized mainly by a tug of war between the hefty caramel malt and the hops with grapefruit and citrus, some pine and florals but the caramel malt has quite a sweetness to it and only nearer the end does it dry out. I thought it was a decently sessionable DIPA but the caramel malt was too overplayed in my opinion. Hop profile had a lot of cascade to it, and it was fairly balanced but the alcohol also was a bit more pronounced and apparent than I would have preferred. Fairly good but the other DIPAs I sampled were better.

Pours a pristine clear reddish amber with a frothy, shortlived head that recedes quite quickly. Pineapple and grapefruit hops and cookie dough mix with alcohol heat in the nose. Pine resin and more grapefruit and tropical fruit hop flavors take the lead in the taste. Crystal malt nuttyness/roastyness is noticeable throughout. The finish is moderately to lightly bitter with a good amount of booze flavor for 8.5%.

A pretty good DIPA but a bit lacking in hop intensity and a bit boozy.

Purchased at the LCBO 650ml bottle for $4.95. Served at 6deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours with a white head and dark golden color

S- Very good. Lots of hops.

T- Very good. Not very bitter. This beer has little bittering hops and A LOT of dry hopping. Light despite the 8.5% alcohol.

M- Smooth and creamy. Again a surprise for a high alcohol beer. Traditional APA

O- Pretty good. Will buy again. Good price point. Had a choice between an unfiltered ale from Belgium 330ml bottle for $4.40 or this 650ml girl for $4.95. Same alcohol.... which one would you reach for first?

Food Pairing

This nice little IPA went well with... Spicey Tuna Roll. Yup! Sushi!

Enjoy

Best Before 080814.

A - Pours a nice golden/dark golden colour. Bright with good carbonation and a two finger off white head. Decent lace rings and a film of retention.

S - Sugary fruits, pineapple core, malt balance there. Not an overly intense DIPA aroma, but suitable.

T - More sugary fruits, some alcohol, definite malt presence and pineapple core sorta citrus flavour. Orange sort of note there too. Definitely not a DIPA with a complex hop profile by any stretch.

M - Decent bitterness, good carbonation, medium body.

O/D - Might be the age, but this is certainly not a DIPA that wows. Decent, but I probably won't finish it at this ABV. Not complex enough for the style and seems to just be a 'stronger' IPA.

650ml bottle into nonic pint. enjoy by (no stone brewing here) august 8, 2014. consumed on july 2, 2014

a: a really vibrant and clear copper, deep orange thing going on here. three fingers of foamy head from a carelessly violent pour. good retention, excellent sticky lacing

s: caramel malt, grapefruit, sweet orange, and some pineapple in the front. slight pine, slight alcohol. smells great

t: citrus flavours dance around the tongue initially -- grapefruit and orange -- but fade out quickly and never make it to centre stage. big caramel/burnt brown sugar flavours emerge just before mid-palate and linger on all the way to the finish. alcohol presence around this stage as well. the mild hop bitterness here isn't quite enough to round out that malty sweetness, but it's not like it tastes bad or anything. i just prefer my IPAs to have a bigger fruit presence. finishes piney and somewhat dry

m: sticky, creamy medium mouthfeel. light-to-medium carbonation. very nice

o: shame about the flavours because other than that, this beer has what it takes to be A+ material. also, the freshness may be a factor here because this brew hit the shelves at LCBO just over a month before its enjoy-by date. i'm sure it's much better fresh. still worth a try

650 ml bottle served well chilled into glassware. Purchased this seasonal offering (as far as LCBO is considered) as I hadn't seen it any of the local stores for under $6 CDN.

Appearance - Bright copper color, with a dense off-white finger and a half of head. Very clear with plenty of effervescent bubbles present.Head has modest retention time but leaves behind thick soapy lacing around the rim of the glass.

Smell - Tons of balanced citrusy aromas, some pineapple, passionfruit and perhaps some orange and clementine mixture. Fairly aromatic earthy malt base just lingering behind the citrus as well. Really good aroma on this although not quite as pronounced as I may have expected from an Imperial IPA.

Taste - Wow, very nice. Huge blend of the pineapple, then something sweet like mango and passion fruit blend, before finishing with a earthy conclusion mixed with some lemon zest and orange rind. Some mild heat on the back end due to the significant alcohol content.

Mouthfeel - Dry finish, dense heavy feel and the flavors coat the mouth nicely, albeit a touch on the syrupy side.Well carbonated, which helps cut through the heavy body. Heat in the mouth and especially the throat afterwards due to the alcohol content.

Overall - A fine DIPA, that I recommend especially to my fellow Ontarians, as this probably won't last in stores too long. A bit on the heavy side, but I could see this being a particularly great sipper on a cool spring evening as it's got a big enough body and booze content to help you warm up even more. Would gladly try again, although beer is probably best if shared.

Pyramid Outburst Imperial IPA has the kind of sun-scorched complexion you'd expect something from the desserts of Egypt to have but is actually far more amber than the remains at Giza or elsewhere; this kind of deep, caramelized colour surely comes from a toasty malt bill. Its head is fine but persistent, seemingly as enduring as the Sphinx itself.

Outburst Imperial IPA is dry-hopped with Zythos and Falconer's Flight hops, the latter of which I'm not very familiar with but have seen popping up with increasing regularity. And I can understand why - hailed as a blend of "the Pacific Northwest's most intriguing aroma hop varieties" there's equal parts grass, serum, grapefruit pith and tangerine peel.

It wouldn't be a West Coast IPA without some resins and, by golly, even the first sip is full of gum-smacking pine tar and sticky tree sap. There's also the requisite grapefruit-like citrus flavour and acidity, as well as the toasty caramel malt to prop them both up.

Outburst might be bitter for the first minute but there's enough caramelization and nutty maltiness that one can quickly become accustomed. It may sport the 'Imperial' moniker - and has the specs to earn it (dry-hopped, 8.5% and 80 IBUs) - but this is, relatively speaking, a very approachable beer given its measurements. For better or worse, this has the quaffability of a standard IPA.

Pyramid may be a fairly big brewery but they're still a small - if swift - current against the mainstream. Outburst Imperial IPA is no Dreadnaught or Pliny the Elder, but it's far, far even less of a Miller High Life or Coors. That this beer is hitting wide audiences is a big boost to craft brewers not just in the Pacific Northwest but everywhere. A sure thing to wean people onto hops.
