Notes/Commercial Description:
Discord Dark IPA celebrates the marriage of two distinct flavors, the Dark Ale and the IPA. The traditional bitterness of an IPA is juxtaposed against a black malt canvas, creating an ale that keeps your taste buds working to discover all of the unique flavors imparted by the 5 different hops and malts.

Glass - Pint

A - A dark mahogany colored brew with little clarity. It produced a 2-finger head that fizzled away quickly. No lacing left on my glass.

S - I pick up licorice, herbal hops, and grapes upfront. I also get brown sugar and molasses underneath. Not much going on here.

T - Upfront I get licorice and brown sugar with, you guessed it, herbal hop notes. It's very similar to the smell, and it finishes with a bit of bark, charcoal, brown sugar and moderate bitterness. Malty flavors linger on the tongue a bit.

M - Lite-moderate crispness with a rather thin lite-medium body.

O - I thought the beer was just okay. The bitterness is rather low for an IPA, and I can't help but to think that it tastes a little watered down because Iv had a few Black IPA's with allot more flavor. The price is right for it but I don't think I'd buy this one again.

Best by:6/15/2013.Poured into a nonic a chesnut brown with a thinner light beige head atop.Aromas are light with black malt and sweet brown sugar-like notes, not much hop presence for the style.Flavors are roasted with black malt notes with a molasses sweetness, the hops provide a mild earthy and even milder piney finish.Eh not anything to go out and look for,I usually like Pyramid offerings more than most...not this one.

Great head retention. Dark brown hue, just barely allows light to penetrate. Mild Pacific Northwest hop aroma. Hops on the front of the palate, a rush of dark malt, and a flourish of hops on the finish. Pretty good in the spectrum of dark IPA's I've tried this is above average.

Trying a big Magic Hat/Pyramid conglomerate products dark IPA. Dark cola color with ruby tinted hues, light khaki head forms thick. Aroma has an earthy ripe hop note with dark malts wrapped around your standard earthy/citric hoppy IPA accents. Flavor is like a watered down porter with alcoholic notes and black licorice that make it nearly undrinkable pine resinous, earthy, dirt ridden hops collide with a dark dry roasted malt character coming off medicinal and unpalatable. Wow, this is bad beer I'm hanging it up as far as Pyramid beers go. Harsh from the first to last sip, carbonation is on but oily resins with the dark malts pretty much ruin the style for me. Terrible simply terrible beer.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Enjoy by 06/14/12.

A: Pours a black body that allows some light through turning it dark dark brown. 1 finger yellowish-tan-white head that disspates to a film. Can actually see a little carbonation when held up to a light.

S: Some great citrus hops coming through on this aroma. Somebody said peach and I can definitely smell that too. A little roasted malt in there.

T: Floral and citrus hops to start, some malt tries to balance it out but gets overwhelmed. Lingering hop aftertaste.

M: Would never picture this beer being so dark with how it feels on the palette. Hops dont leave any unwanted sticky resins.

Overall a pretty enjoyable brew. Probably the most drinkable Dark IPA i've had.

Appearance - Pours a deep, dark, near black auburn brown with a light tan head that sits just under two fingers. Fair retention, resulting in a broken layer of microbubbles across the surface. Fair lacing with little stick.

Smell - Floral, somewhat citric hop aroma. Lesser hints of cocoa and caramel.

Taste - Strong orange peel character upfront and throughout, with moderate cocoa and light touches of roast near the finish. Orange pith bitterness rings through the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body fair carbonation. Goes down well enough.

Overall - A decent Black IPA from Pyramid. Not a complex presentation, as the hop character is more or less a one note presence, making for a fairly uneventful drinking experience. Doubtful I'd buy this again.

A - A semi-agrgessive pour leads to a big tan and frothy head that leaves a ton of lace on the over-sized (like WAY oversized) wine glass that I used for this brew. Root beer brown with ruby highlights. Nice lookin' beer!

S - Malty caramel and chocolate notes with much less of a hop presence than I would have guessed. More malty and "stout-y" than the name suggests.

T - Tates more like a hoppy stout or porter than an IPA, but it is really good no matter what the style or name would imply. It is really piney on the back end though. Good stuff!

M - Big mouthfeel. Solid and chewy, with a creamy feeling after swallowing.

This is a uniquely fun beer that doesn't really fit in to any catgory, but that's totally ok with me. Good is good, and this is a goood beer!

Note: not really evaluating this one "to-style" since there isn't really a style for this beast. I am starting to see more dark IPAs on the market, but good beer is good beer, right?

Poured into a pint glass. Two fingers of head, dark brown color.

Strong pine smell with some grapefruit backup.

Balanced flavor at first, big pine tree and lemon in the middle, ends with a brunt malt. Curious and good.

Medium and sticky body, moderate carbonation.

A good DIPA.

Picked this up tonight at the COOP... Poured into my little CC goblet.. very clear deep brown... nice tan head with good lacing.

Citrus zest with bits of pine ... a nice mix of chocolate and dark roast malt let you know this is dark without ever being overbearing.

Flavor pretty much mirrors the nose.... a bit of pithy bitterness trails out on the finish.

Body is a light/medium... good small bubble carbonation makes me want another sip.... Pretty good and cheap... I dig it.

All 4's.

Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a dark reddish brown. Thin fine light tan head that slowly dissipates to a thin film with slight lacing. Aroma of toasty malt, light hops and a hint of chocolate. Flavor with light toasted and biscuit malt, but dominated by bitter non-herbal, slightly citrus hops. Finishes with hop bitterness; somewhat astringent. Medium bodied with a decent mouth feel. A satisfactory dark IPA, but could use more flavorful distinct hops with some more malt support.
