New beer in the Pyramid Fall beer variety pack.
Clear red colored beer with a medium sized tan colored head that doesn't last. Lovely ruby red color when held up to the light.
Smell is malty and distinctly floral scented. Spicy sour scent of rye is quite bold, no obscured by a heavy hopping hand. Mild scents of coffee and char. Certainly smells the part.
Starts out mildly spicy with a strong rye flavor right off the bat, after taste is patent malt and mildly scorched sugars. Little bit of a port flavor here, cared malt and mild coffee flavors. Good rye beer without a boat load of hops to mask the rye flavors.
Mouthfeel is full.
Overall better than I expected. Quite a good Rye beer.

Appearance - Pours amber with ruby highlights. Khaki colored finger width head with sub-par retention, resulting in a thin but consistent layer of suds across the surface.
Smell - Heavy on malt on the forefront. Caramel with touches of chocolate. Slight spice, well in the background.
Taste - Follows the nose. Lots of malt character upfront and through out. Caramel and milk chocolate sweetness. Touches of smoke. Rye, unfortunately, is scantly found in the flavor. Hits faintly in the aftertaste, and on the lips, but none of that prominent peppery bite hits on the tongue that is oh so familiar with rye featured brews. A shame; this is a flavorful brew, otherwise.
Mouthfeel - Medium in body with fair carbonation. Smooth. Very drinkable qualities.
Overall - When labeling a beer as simple but as bold as "Red Rye", you'd better make sure the rye shines through. Unfortunately for this brew it's only an afterthought. All in all this is a decent beer, but it's deceptive in its description, and thus a letdown. One of those rare beers I like better than I score it; if only rye wasn't in the name! If they didn't emphasize the rye, maybe this gets a 3.9?
