Poured from a 680 ml bottle.

L - clear, straw-gold colour, very thin head which lasted for most of drink, some lacing, lots of carbonation - like champagne.

S - faint, sweet, bready, malty. No distinguishable hop aroma.

T - bready, cidery, acidic, hint of pear. Grassy flavours. No real hop presence.

F - thin dry, cidery, crisp, good carbonation. No real aftertaste.

O - not bad, but the acidic, cidery taste is overwhelming, unpleasant and robs the other tastes. Disapointing as I have not yet found any decent pilsners made in Canada.

680ml bottle from LCBO

Clear golden straw with minimal and quickly dissipating head. Sugar and light biscuit on the nose. Light caramel with next to no hop character in the taste. Light body with strong carbonation. This is better than I thought it would be, but not by too much. Certainly a cut above macro AALs, but not something to seek out.

slim head with plenty of big bubbled carbonation. clear pale straw colour.

light grainy malt, bready, hay, hint of lemon. green grass.

very mild flavours, dry grasses on the front, malty bread comes in a bit toward the end. Not much hop presence to be had.

Very light body and high carbonation in the mouth. watery.

Overall its only an average offering. While it could pass as a light and fresh pils, its lack of bitter finish leaves a lot to be desired - this is, after all, the defining character of the style. Easy to drink and some likeable malt flavours, but not enough to bring me back again.

Old Credit Brewing Co. Ltd. is located at 6 Queen Street West in Port Credit, Mississauga and has been in business for roughly 17 years (as of 2011). The brewery currently produces 3 beers; an Amber Ale, Pale Pilsner and a seasonal Holiday Honey. Old Credit uses a sub zero brewing process and ice ages its beers with no additives, preservatives or pasteurization, though its beers are artificially rather than naturally carbonated. As a result, its beers have an estimated shelf life of 6 months but are best consumed within 45 days of production for optimal flavour. Old Credit does not believe in printing production dates or best before dates on its beers, but chooses instead to pay particular attention to its inventory management. The company's distribution is limited to the Greater Toronto Area.

Old Credit's Pale Pilsner ("Pilsner") is 5.0% alcohol by volume, and I tried it in a 680 ml bottle purchased from their on-premises retail store. Pilsner poured a clear, pale golden yellow colour, and following the ideal pouring method described on the company's web site, produced a 2" fluffy white head that lasted for quite some time. The head eventually settled down into a thin layer, leaving some moderate spotting down the glass. Pilsner's aroma was dominated by the hops, and its flavour very much followed the aroma with a hoppy bitterness dominating the brew. The finish was dry, but with a noticeable bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel was crisp with the level of carbonation just right, and Pilsner was medium bodied.

Since the bottle held 680 ml, there was some beer remaining after the initial pour and this warmer beer was better balanced. The malt sweetness came through in both the aroma and taste of this warmer brew, better balancing the hop bitterness and with a more subdued aftertaste. While almost sacrilegious in North America, I would recommend taking this beer out of the fridge about 10-15 minutes before drinking...a much better experience than drinking it straight from the fridge. On balance, this is a respectable North Americanized Pilsner, though personally I could do without the aftertaste.

680 ml bottle picked up from LCBO for under $5 CDN. Served cold and poured into a pint glass.

Appearance - Clear golden color, about 1 finger of head that subsides very quickly. No lacing. Some bubbles are present but not an overwhelming abundance of them.

Smell - Cereal grains, very light and mild hops and malt aromas, grassy notes as well. Quite clean and crisp. Maybe a touch of lemon?

Taste - Faint grassy flavors, hop presence is invisible. No real bitterness here, a little bit would have gone along way in making this bolder.

Mouthfeel - Clean, crisp but thin tasting and strangely not very smooth.

Overall - Not a bad beer, that I would consider more frequently if they sold in can's or smaller bottles, but didn't enjoy the beer enough to revisit the 680ml bottle. While it's not very interesting it's certainly better than many of the AAL's on the market so price-wise, it's not noticeably worse.

The bottle poured a clear, golden colour with a nice white head which fades shortly with time and leaves little lacing. Aroma is slight with a hint of noble hops.

Fairly light on flavour but with a bready malt which is balanced with a nice crisp hop bitterness. Very mellow & understated with a light body but a very good and easy drinking beer.

Appearance: It has a nice pale straw yellow color to it. It has a nice white head that dies down fast and leaves next to no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of grainy malts, some breadiness and some floral hops.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some grainy malts, some breadiness and faint floral hops.

Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a slightly light overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with decent flavors and aromas.

341 mL bottle; no best before date. Courtesy of this season's OCB Holiday Sampler. I seem to be outside of this brewery's distribution range, because the only time I've ever seen anything from Old Credit is in these samplers.

Pours a clear, pale, golden-yellow colour, topped with a half-finger of fizzy white head that quickly diminishes into a thin collar and cap. A far cry from the "thick, creamy, fine-textured head" the box describes it as, but maybe I'm doing it wrong. Decent aroma; some grainy, crackery malts, a hint of honey and some grassy hop notes. Nothing fancy, but at least it has quelched my suspicion that this isn't really a pilsener.

Somewhat interesting flavour; not entirely pilsener-y, but it's not like it's adjunct swill, either. Starts off light and grainy, a bit crackery/biscuity with a dash of honey sweetness. The hop bill comes across only mildly and only toward the finish - it's grassy, lemony, and maybe slightly noble in nature. Light, malty dryness in the aftertaste, of a fleeting nature (the package's words, not mine). Light-bodied and fairly watery, with moderate carbonation. Easy to throw back quickly, and probably not interesting enough to serve any other purposes.

I can't say for sure how fresh this is, since Old Credit doesn't stamp any bottling/best before dates on their bottles - but one thing I *will* say is that it does strongly remind me of a local pale lager brewed by Railway City, their Canada Southern Draft. The difference is, I pick up CSD from the brewery when it is quite fresh, while this stuff has probably been sitting around for a while, due to the nature of the OCB sampler system. I have a feeling this variable probably accounts for my difference in opinion between two relatively similiar-style brews.

Final Grade: 3.27, a marginal C+. Even though Old Credit Pale Pilsener is far from a bad beer in general, the lack of a significant hop bill restricts it from being an especially good pilsener. I don't know what price bracket this particular stuff is sold within, but if it were priced at the same level as most of the common 'premium' lagers (think Canadian, Moosehead, etc.), I could see myself opting for this instead when drinking socially. If you're looking for a genuine German-style OCB pilsener, I can't really recommend this, but if you just want a sessionable, straightforward lager, then OCPP might just be the brew for you. Cheers!
