This showed up at my Krogers a few weeks ago, so going over to some friends house to watch some UFC.. I purchased this... who could resist some Voodoo?

Appearence - Dark... I would say kind of like a medium roast coffee. when poured it pours a decent head that does fade to leave a slight covering of foam. Good.

Smell - hmmm kind of like Malty swamp water. Malt and hops. Average

Taste - after smelling I thought it would taste sweeter and not be crisp, but I was wrong, it's very good but not great if that makes any sense. The hops are not strong, but yet not weak either. I'm going with above average.

Mouthfeel - well as I mentioned... crispy. I like crispy, Good

Drinkability - very drinkable....

Dixie Voodoo.... not the "old" voodoo! The original version of Voodoo was quite a great dark beer. Since the 2005 Katrina hurricane the Dixie brewery has been closed. The beer is now brewed under contract by a Wisconsin brewery which is teamed up with Minhas brewery in Calgary, Alberta. What you find now is an imitation and not the original taste or flavor. I find the new (contracted) brew to be too sweet which is indicative of most of the Minhas brand of beers. Good dark color decent flavor but way to sweet finish. Bring back Dixie Brewery.

A standard pour of Dixie's Blackened Voodoo Lager yields a nut-brown body that turns crimson when held up to a ceiling lamp. The brew doesn't offer much by way of foam or lacing, but a thin ring of oatmeal fizz does nestle into the groove around the edge of the brew. Carbonation is mild and appealing.

The nose is weak. Faint notes of caramel and molasses are appreciable, but just barely.

What the taste lacks in complexity, it makes up for in appeal. Light brown sugar dominates, complemented by browned butterscotch, toasted biscuit, and some dried Turkish apricot. The flavors aren't intense; this is a light, drinkable dunkel. In fact, it's so drinkable that I've just noticed I'm more than half way through. The mouthfeel isn't as thin as I had feared, and nicely complements the beer's flavor profile.

BeerAdvocate lists this beer as a Schwarzbier. But considering the lack of roasted flavors (e.g., coffee, chocolate) that are associated with Schwarzbiers, I think it makes more sense to consider Blackened Voodoo Lager as a sweet, all-malt Munich Dunkel. Enjoy it with jerk chicken or creole shrimp.

Looked very much like a porter, mine did have some head to it but faded quickly.Had some chocolatyaromas and flavors to it,was pretty thin compared to what I thought it to be.Very easy to drink for the color, can drink many of these without filling up.

Appearance - This is a dark brown in color with a decent head.

Smell - The malts are a bit grainy but otherwise exactly on for the style, a rare accomplishment for an American effort at the MDL. There's also that rich unsweetened molasses aroma that you find in good German samples.

Taste - The one doesn't fall into sweetness like some other disappointments that I've had. The malt retains its heavy structure from the nose keeping the malt pronounced.

Mouthfeel - This is on the heavy side of light-bodied with some mild but thankfully persistent bitterness and just enough carbonation.

Drinkability - This is an excellent-drinking Munich. Of the few American efforts I've had of the dunkles lager I think only Penn's tops this one. Nicely done.

I'm not really sure what style this is. I've read schwarzbier and this says munich dunkel, so, a little hard to score.

Overall, it's a fairly pleasant beer with caramel, cocoa powder, mocha, hazelnut, marshmallow notes, and chocolate tea cookie. A lot of sweet malt flavors without being too sweet.

Presentation: It was poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: The pour produces a light tan head of good size that slowly fades to much thinner covering. Lacing is slick and spotty. Underneath the head is a very dark amber liquid with reddish highlights and decent clarity.

Smell: Its aroma is malty and sweet, candy like and a little roasted. Hops add a touch of floral and light citrus perfume like notes.

Taste/Mouth: The flavor is sweet, malty, and bready with a light touch of caramel and a very slight hint of coffee like bitterness. There are also some nice mild roasted notes and well balanced hop flavor. The finish has more roasted notes and hop bitterness fading off the tongue. The texture is slightly thin and very drinkable with aggressive carbonation that has a little bite.

Notes: It's a nice overall dark lager with a good balance of hops and malt. It reminded me of a light bodied, thinner Oktoberfest beer.

Appearance: light chocolate brown, clear, small head, medium carbonation

Smell:toasted malt, caramel, light cream, chocolate

Taste: caramel, malt, small nutty taste...There is another taste in there--almost frankincense like similar to Abita's restoration pale ale

Mouthfeel: medium thin body, can taste medium high carbonation, semi-sweet

Drinkability: I am not a seasonal drinker, but this beer screamed autumn to me. I sort of see it like a fizzier slightly less strong version of Leinenkugel's fireside nut brown. A good beer, not great, that I could session--if the time was right.

The beer pours a hazy chocolate-brown color with a tan colored head. The aroma is tea, earthy hops and toffee. The flavor is toffee, chocolate, earthy hops and dirt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not a bad beer, but nothing too terribly exciting.

Poured a very dark brown with a tannish-colored head that leaves a patchy lacing on the glass. Aromas consist of some dark chocolate, nuts, and dark fruit. Flavor was rather strange, with a smoky, chocolaty, almost....spoiled fruit-type flavor. There is a solid hop backbone to this beer and the bittering flavor at the end lends testament to this. Mouthfeel was above average, with a high-medium body and smoothness. I was surprised at how quickly I drank this one. I'm still not sure what I think about this beer. I was intrigued by it due to fellow BA PhantomVoDoo (note the intentional mis-spelling of the name...), but I'll need to wait for a few weeks and try this again and see if my opinion has changed.

Poured from a bottle into a chilled mug.

Appearance - Pours a nice amber cherry wood color. Slight head unless poured aggressively.

Smell - Nice sweet malty smell with hints of grapes. Slight hoppy coffee smell in the back.

Taste - Strong sweet malty taste at first then gives way to a slight toffee. Nice aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Decent carbonation. Slightly dry.

Drinkability - Decent. Mildly smooth for this type of lager. Strong enough to notice but still smooth enough to sip a few at a time.

Overall an interesting brew. Probably won't be a regular in my 'fridge but I'm sure I'll be in the mood for it occasionally.

Good stuff. Pours dark brown with red highlights and a short off-white head. Subtle malty aroma, kind of roasty. Sweet, hoppy lager with plenty of malt. Nice finish. Always had this with bbq chicken while in Virginia. Haven't tried it since moving. May have been the atmosphere, but I remember this as being a nice, easy beer.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a dark brown with no head at all. Nose is a bit smokey and a bit boozy but not too much.

Taste is a bit odd, got some smokiness and light boozy, it also has that home brew wheaty twang too it. Not super drinkable because of this.
