Picked this up on a recent camping sojourn out to Revelstoke BC. Beautiful place. 650ml seasonal bottle from the boys at Begbie: golden label with the big letters saying "Hefe" and a little blurb about the malts used and the aroma. Lovely to see a new hefeweizen from a brewery, one of my favourite styles and always an interesting one to see a brewery try. Begbie's other German-style beer, the Kolsch, is very good. Let's see what this has to offer. A dirty yellow haze in my weizen glass, with a very thin but fine bright-white head. Rusty water or apple juice colour. Fast moving lace. Compared to many German hefes, this appears quite average. The aroma is big on banana, but lurking behind is a tangy sourish malty smell that is not as appetising as some its better brothers. Banana and clove, and some lime citrus: a sugary syrupy tartness that smells like this has a lemon or lime squeezed into it. Smelling in closer, the beers exudes a warming spiciness of cinnamon and strong cloves, some faint dusty wood notes and lots of milk-notes. There are some good elements in the aroma, but the balance just seems off: the complexity is lacking and it just smells mediocre for a hefe. The taste really emulates the aroma well, with perhaps a little more balance and taste than expected. Little taste up front on the tongue besides some citrus salinity and a little pale malting. The middle gives some fruits, mainly banana and light pear or green apple. The finish is decent enough, with a little numbing spiciness and plenty of milky banana flavours. There are other flavours of orange, fresh bread and even a hint of some bittering hops. The beer is medium bodied with fairly low carbonation. A good mouthfeel, really. This is definitely quaffable, and the aftertaste induces further sipping, but with all the remarkable German hefes available, this would not frequent by beer glass. Good, just little complexity and off-balance somehow. I have yet to try a NA hefeweizen that can compare even with some of the least of the German examples.

I won 2 bottles of this beer as a prize package in a homebrew competition.

UPDATE: After gaining more review experience and then sampling the 2nd bottle, I felt the need to update my original review.

650 ml bottle served in 22oz weizen glass.

Pours a classic hazy pale straw colour. Vigourous pour nets little in the way of a head, which quickly dissipates. No lacing.

Smell is tangy banana complimented by other fruits and bubblegum, yet balanced with clove esters.

Taste is very similar to smell, starts out with the fruit and finishes with the spice. Tang is balanced by soft wheat malt, but a sourness lingers.

The beer is cold and only 5%abv, yet I sense an alcohol warmth in my throat... this is not good. Not enough carbonation either, a flat and sour hefe is not my thing.

I originally liked the taste of this beer, it is certainly unique and did not have the classic hefe taste. However, the 2nd bottle was a struggle to drink. I don't think I'd want another one of these ever again.

Not much yeast in the bottom of this 650 mL bottle... and the stuff that's there, sticks there! Try to rouse it up, you'll get more flavour.

A: Golden straw, only slightly murky. Pours with a nice off-white head, but it quickly dissipates.

S: Quite citrousy, a little cloves.

T: Bready malt, citrousy, a little clove and some banana. Quite good, but with a little less malt (more attenuation?), the other flavours might shine through. It's a good flavour, it's just a little thin (despite the heavier than average body).

M: Moderate body (slightly heavier than average), moderately high carbonation. Needs more HEFE!

D: A fairly easy drinker. Very approachable, not over powering. For the style, it's a little lack-luster.

From the label:
"This beer is unfiltered and brewed in the tradition of the Hefeweizens of Southern Germany. Pale, Wheat and Munich malts produce a medium bodied, golen ale with the unmistakable clove and banana flavours that make this ale so enjoyable."
