This is a beer lover’s beer. Anarchist Amber Ale is a full bodied hand-crafted ale that is a generous combination of carefully roasted malted barley balanced with three Northwest hop varieties. Patient and watchful conditioning results in a harmony of hop and malt.

Look: Clear red-tan color. Pours to a head with fine bubbles that break down to larger bubbles but maintains more integrity than a thin skiff. Still a bit of foam on the side of the glass instead of just a lacing.
Smell: A blend of malt with a strong yeast component tending towards mushrooms. Swirling the glass boosts the earthy mushroom scents.
Taste: Starts with a mild sweet malt and fruit flavor that quickly adds in stronger malts and some of the earthy mushroom flavor. The aftertaste is hardwood and mild bitters.
Feel: Bypasses the creamy foam stage and goes straight to larger bubbles.
Overall: Lighter malt flavor and a stronger bitter than I expected. Something like a mildly bitter IPA with more malt. Seems like it would be more appropriate for the winter months.

I'm a fan of this brewery, its location, and the local attraction (Anarchist Mountain) this beer is named after. It is a serviceable, pleasant, straightforward beer. The malt character is subdued and it is reasonably quaffable.

Ah, the amber ale. Every self-respecting craft brewer has to offer one of these stalwarts, to lure in those less than intrepid drinkers who eschew potent hops or palate-blasting coffee stouts but who nevertheless wish to dip their toes in the craft beer pool. The name Anarchist is therefore a tad ironic. In any event, I snagged this can from a mixed 6-pack and decided to see how this one stacks up against the many other ambers and reds I've tried. A darkish orange honey amber brew, just a shade darker than this brewery's IPA consumed the same evening, with a copious quantity of light tan head that broke down quickly. Aroma was frustratingly subtle and nondescript until the beer warmed up, with some nutty sweet malts, light caramel, and weedy, faintly piney hops revealing themselves. Nice hop nose for an amber ale. Palate had some of this hop character as well but the malts stole the show. Things started dry and nutty, walnut and pretzel flavors, followed by honeyed breakfast cereal, pears, brown sugar, and watermelon hard candy, with the sweetness building over time along with an earthy, faintly woody hop bitterness. Thin to moderate body, with ample carbonation but smooth and gentle on the mouth. Finishes semi-sweet rather than overly nutty or bitter, with the aforementioned hops making their presence known. Not likely to become a staple but all in all not too shabby and a worthy session beer, with enough complexity to avoid becoming truly boring.

Hazy dark amber ale with a thick collapsing light moka head. Caramel malt in aroma with very light floral hops. Sweet malt taste, a bit too sweet and cloying, like unfermented wort, with strong diacetyl, and a lingering unpleasant faint hop juice. Medium bodied. Rather unbalanced and lacking something.
