I love me some fruit beers, but for the most parts they`ve all been lighter coloured - this is my first trek into fruit flavoured porters, and this brewery`s beer sells not too badly at my store, so I am giving it a go.
The pour is straight up black with a dark beige head. The smell is rich in fruit aromas - like a jam almost. I don`t smell much actual beeriness, but there are some faint malty aromas in the background. The first sip was really cool - you definately get a lot of fruit taste, but it`s not sweet at all! This isn`t a good or a bad thing, since fruit beers really can go both ways and still be good. It sure tastes like a porter all right, but the more I drink it, the less I can taste that great berry taste that was so prevalent in the first few sips - very odd. Still, it is pleasant going down without an offputting aftertaste. The mouthfeel is good; it is low in carbonation like I would expect of the style, but has some fine body - although not as much body as some of the other porters I`ve tasted.
Overall, it looks and feels like a decent porter with some nice fruit tastes which were not sweet that somewhat become less pronounced as I went on. The smell, however, remained throughout, and was mild, but indicative of the presence of blackberries. I might buy this one again - it wasn`t that bad.

Appearance: frothy, tan head, great length and leaves lace; very dark brown colour, almost black
Aroma: sweet blackberry and cassis; maraschino cherry and hint of chocolate is giving sense of blackforest cake
Taste & Mouthfeel: fresh fruit flavour, not sugary sweet, more like squeezed juice; definitely sings of blackberry, get some concord grape too; finishes with a dry bitterness that doesn't overwhelm the juicy flavours; there's a hint of roasted malt is a nice pair to the fruit; light body and super easy-drinking; could maybe use a bit more hop or malt character, as the fruit flavour gets a bit tiring by the end
Overall: lacks the cloying sweetness typical of many fruit beers; love the natural flavour of the beer and fairly balanced composition, but would be interested to see this with a fuller body
