A&S - Pours a deep copper with a good amount of eggshell colored head, smells of caramel malt, a lot of piney hops, some sage adding to the earthiness.

T&M - Tastes very dry on the front with lots of sticky pine, it then turns sweet on the back with lots of that caramel malt and sage working together with a strong hop presence. Mouthfeel is well carbonated for its medium body.

O - Not a favorite but overall a nice beer.

After a trip to Mammoth I cracked this one open at home on a hot day, after the first sip I realized this was meant to be drank in the local area while skiing or fishing. The earthiness is very strong but on a nice day in mammoth it would really hit the spot. The pine presence is also very strong, which may be a bad thing for some. Mammoth Brewing has now become a place i'll stop by while i'm in the area, however most brews lack the wow factor and a reason for me to recommend them to other, and so forth. Overall pick this one up if your in the area and be sure to drink it while your there, also the bottles makes a nice addition to the collection. Stay thirsty my friends!

Thanks to KEWire for adding this as an extra!

Let me preface this review by saying I normally don't care for beers with a bunch of flora added to them, i.e. juniper, sage, and what not.

Appearance:
Pours a beautiful dark copper/ amber color with the appropriate amount of carbonation. About a one inch, tan creamy head. Stunning looking beer. It screams "Make love to me with your face." Poured into a 12oz tulip glass.

Smell:
Holy balls. If you went and picked a bunch of fresh juniper and sage from a mountain side, it probably wouldn't smell as fresh as this beer does. There's also a bit of a mint aroma that I'm getting, probably from the juniper. It's hard to explain, but even though the juniper is very prevalent, its not over the top. You better like juniper if you wanna try this beer though. Also a faint smell of sweet and biscuit malt.

Taste:
Definitely notice all of the flora up front, but the taste gets rounded out with the sweet malt and great hop profile. Very well balanced. All of the flavors, play an important role in this beer, and while the flora is prominent, its not screaming for attention.

Mouthfeel:
Feels exactly like it should. (That's what she said)

Overall:
Double IPA's are hard to get right. Especially when you start adding different flora to it. You better know what the hell your doing. The guys at Mammoth nailed this one. You can't sit around and hammer a bunch of these beers. But this one sure did go down fast. A gin drinker's wet dream. Really enjoyed it.

This is a great beer! Certainly a "mountainy" beer.

Fresh juniper/sage on the nose, lots of it.

Crisp and juicy citrusy and piney hops with a little biscuity malt, sweet and floral layer with juniper and sage, a touch of wild blackberries. Finishes with a warm faint caramely malt note, again with hops and juniper lingering on the palate.

I grew up cruising up the 395 to the Mammoth/ surrounding Sierra area, so perhaps there's a bit of nostalgia for me with this beer. However, I think the use of local juniper, sage, and wild hops is not a mere gimmick but actually creates a unique and delicious beer. While the juniper and sage are featured and very present, they do not dominate the palate but pair and bring out great flavors of the hops. Very drinkable and enjoyable for many occasions.

cheers
