(reviewed from notes; sampled sometime in late September '11)

I was very intrigued after reading the bottle while perusing the shelves at my local bottle shop. It says they use juniper and sage, along with local hops, in this one. Well, it definitely shines through and not in a pleasant way.

Appearance is typical of the style. Smell offers a glimpse of the unpleasantness to come. Very strange, off-putting aroma of wild flora (I guess that's the juniper and sage).

Taste is very unpleasant. I got a few sips down and had had enough. Imagine gathering some very wild, very dry sage, juniper leaves, and hops, and then soaking them in sugary water... that is what this beer tasted like.

I don't remember what the mouthfeel was like, as the awful taste dominated all else, so I'll just call the mouthfeel average.

I'd heard where this beer had given some others a bad headache. After only several sips, I felt it start to go to work on my cranium. Down the drain it went, and fast.

Very disappointed. I like the bottle, the description, the thought and the effort, but the beer was not good at all.

You could say this really does smell like the Sierras with all the pine, sage, and juniper. Very attractive coppery orange color in the tall Belgian glass. Plenty of foam that lasts well. Quite fragrant with the woodsy and resiny smells.

This is quite malty but not overly sweet. Pungent is the word you are looking for here. Still it's sippable, if a little intense. Scratchy bitter notes with hops and that distinct juniper bitterness. Piney and resiny. It reminds me of the spruce-flavored beers, but way beyond. There is some hot orange marmalade and a very bitter aftertaste.

This is an interesting variation on the usual DIPA styles. Intense and hard to drink very much, but it's a unique flavor mix in my experience. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.

Thanks to KEWire for adding this as an extra!

Let me preface this review by saying I normally don't care for beers with a bunch of flora added to them, i.e. juniper, sage, and what not.

Appearance:
Pours a beautiful dark copper/ amber color with the appropriate amount of carbonation. About a one inch, tan creamy head. Stunning looking beer. It screams "Make love to me with your face." Poured into a 12oz tulip glass.

Smell:
Holy balls. If you went and picked a bunch of fresh juniper and sage from a mountain side, it probably wouldn't smell as fresh as this beer does. There's also a bit of a mint aroma that I'm getting, probably from the juniper. It's hard to explain, but even though the juniper is very prevalent, its not over the top. You better like juniper if you wanna try this beer though. Also a faint smell of sweet and biscuit malt.

Taste:
Definitely notice all of the flora up front, but the taste gets rounded out with the sweet malt and great hop profile. Very well balanced. All of the flavors, play an important role in this beer, and while the flora is prominent, its not screaming for attention.

Mouthfeel:
Feels exactly like it should. (That's what she said)

Overall:
Double IPA's are hard to get right. Especially when you start adding different flora to it. You better know what the hell your doing. The guys at Mammoth nailed this one. You can't sit around and hammer a bunch of these beers. But this one sure did go down fast. A gin drinker's wet dream. Really enjoyed it.
