I am reviewing this beer as an Herbal Red Ale not as a "double IPA" as it says on the label. If I reviewed it as a double IPA it would be a much lower rating.

However, as a specialty herbal ale its about as good as it gets.

It pours a beautiful, stunning ruby red with a thick, creamy head. Great lacing and great retention.

Aroma is a very nice balance of juniper, sage and light citrus/spicy hops. Very pronounced boquet that is very inviting.

Taste is a nice solid red ale (only a hint of toasted malt) with a good amount of juniper and some burnt sage. There is not much hop forwardess as the citrus notes are hidden beneath the herbal flavors. Nice hop bite in the back end but certainly not too bitter. Quite complex, delicious and very easy to drink.

Mouth feel is medium bodied, smooth and very palatable.

Overall, its one of the best herbal beers Ive ever had. Its an artisan, rustic, specialty beer that I will definitely drink again.

You could say this really does smell like the Sierras with all the pine, sage, and juniper. Very attractive coppery orange color in the tall Belgian glass. Plenty of foam that lasts well. Quite fragrant with the woodsy and resiny smells.

This is quite malty but not overly sweet. Pungent is the word you are looking for here. Still it's sippable, if a little intense. Scratchy bitter notes with hops and that distinct juniper bitterness. Piney and resiny. It reminds me of the spruce-flavored beers, but way beyond. There is some hot orange marmalade and a very bitter aftertaste.

This is an interesting variation on the usual DIPA styles. Intense and hard to drink very much, but it's a unique flavor mix in my experience. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.
