Bottle Opened on December 28, 2013
Appearance: Dark-straw colored, umber
Smell / Aroma: Malty, biscuity
Taste: Sweet, maybe too sweet
Drinkability: Smoothness helps, but ultimately this is a sipping beer
Overall: A pleasant beer for sipping after dinner, pretty sweet and hardy overall. True to bock style. Our crew liked it overall, but some dissension within the ranks.

You can really taste the burnt caramel flavors from the Stein process. The smell is complex . A really interesting beer.

Pours a clear and dark brown color with a thin off white head.

Aromas are nutty, slightly sweet with some brown sugar, and some nice cocoa notes.

Taste is also nutty up front, some brown sugars, with a general sweetness. Finish is warm, but not hot, also has a nice subtle cocoa taste.

Mouthfeel is smooth and full, not heavy either.

Overall, a very solid beer. And also a pretty good example of the style.

The color is quite remarkable-- a vivid red amber. It has pours with a jolly big head in the tall Kölsch glass, plenty of bubbles, and then it flattens out finally, but nice while it lasts. Plenty spritzy on the tongue, at least until the alcohol has the tongue-numbing effect.

Some fruity grain aroma. Taste is just hot and sweet and tastes of fruit cocktail with peach brandy. I think of Jujubes, the movie theatre candy, along with apricot nectar and scorched pancake syrup. The malt is quite sweet with maple cookie flavor. The finish is a truly taste-bud curdling sweet and bitter cough syrup taste.

This is some tough stuff to swallow. I'm always happy to down a glass of some boozy brew as long as there's a chicken leg and a hot bath to slide into. This is not going to do the job. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.

Winter 2014-2015 vintage.

Pours a hazy crimson-orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of caramel, toffee, and candied fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, nut, caramel, and toffee flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty, but the smells I am getting from this one are slightly better.

cedar/light mahogany in color; clear, with no head to speak of, unless you let it slop in the glass.
sweet smell, malty. kind of fruit aroma, a little like wine....
almost like a dopplebock, but with an alcohol sting although there is not a noticeable taste of alcohol. easy to drink, especially for 10% abv. smooth on front of the tongue, only a tad bitter as it passes down. scary how drinkable this is with the abv. could almost session this stuff.
overall, good stuff. not belgium-good, but good. i give it high marks for taste due to the smoothness and refined taste.

Pours a reddish brown with a two finger caramel colored head. Smells very bready and slightly nutty with mild toffee sweetness. The flavor is divided. It's half sweet bread and half alcohol. I like it, but I feel I might grow tired of it.
