Pours a SEXY sludgey black with a thick light brown head

nose- cocoa, black cherry, vanilla, touch of black licorice, bourbon

taste- lovely. cocoa, dark fruits (cherry, figs, etc), vanilla and oaky goodness, earthy hops, perfect boozy warmth. finishes oaky and bourbony with lush and dry roasted malt

feel- heavy, chewy, roasty, syrupy, awesome

there are obviously a handful of amazing barrel-aged imperial stouts that are amazing, this isn't KBS, BCBS top-tier but it is very good. I would buy this often

16.9 ounce bottle poured into a Belgian tulip glass

A: Pitch black with a nice mocha colored head, head vanished fairly quick, getting some nice lacing on the glass, not much carbonation, lots of tiny bubbles in what is left of the head, looks really good.

A: Not much on the nose, bourbon, some chocolate, hint of alcohol on the finish, pretty mellow it's not bursting with bourbon aromas.

T: Bourbon, a really nice chocolate sweetness finishing off bitter, very easy drinking, smooth, the chocolate really lingers with a dry finish, some alcohol burn on the end, but this taste really good.

M: Nice creamy medium mouthfeel with a dry finish.

O: Very impressed, nice balance barrel aged stout, easy drinking, nice creamy mouthfeel, the barrel does not dominate the flavor but complements the chocolate notes in the beer. I would love to try the base beer, if you love barrel aged stouts this one is definitely worth a try.

From a bottle into a FW snifter at just under room temp.

L- Pours nice and thick, slowly building a dark, burnt orange colored head. Looks delish.

S- Bourbon, not overpowering but right there. I think I can even identify the Jack, kinda sharp, really nice. Dark fruits, cherry, licorice and cocoa, def cocoa.

T- Def get a bitter alcohol right away. Cocoa, coffee, strong dark fruits...very strong. Maybe some vanilla.

F- Fairly thick, creamy...swishing it gives lots of head which adds a lot to the mouthfeel.

O- Pretty enjoyable BBA Imp. Stout. A good representation of the style, big and bold, yet still presenting many subtleties...not one dimensional at all.

22oz bottle poured into a lost abbey teku.

A: Pitch black body with an espresso colored head that fades quickly after a vigorous pour.

S: Earthy espresso and dark chocolate right off the bat, followed by hints of dark fruit and a background note of bourbon/oak.

T: Espresso and cacao flavors up front, with a dark cherry note that further develops as it warms. Vanilla/toasty oak is a minor contributor from the bourbon barrels following each sip.

M: Medium/Light body for the style, with perfect carbonation levels. Usually prefer a bit more residual sugar in Imperial Stouts, but the predominant coffee flavors are expressed well in conjunction with a dryer, less cloying finish IMO.

Overall a very enjoyable beer. Espresso flavors are prevalent while the bourbon barrel notes take a back seat. Much more balanced than most examples of the style but lacking some complexity that beers with more influence from the barrel may have.

Look: Very black with a light brown head. Smell: chocolate ,vanilla, mineral, dark berry. Taste: spicy, short lived bitter coco, some alcohol burn, smooth coffee taste lots of mineral flavor almost metallic. Overall good beer not worth the 17bucks but really good quite warming.

This beer was a very pleasant surprise considering the brewery only distributes in California and Nevada. Russian Imperial Stout, ABV 9.5, IBU 70, aged in bourbon barrels for 7 months

A: very dark, almost black

S: pleasant smell of chocolate, roasted coffee, bourbon

T: initially mild chocolate with bourbon/coffee finish

M: not as heavy as some stouts but by no means watery; smooth

O: very good and a great value for a BBA stout; nice balance of hops and malts; I will be buying more of this; probably my favorite BBA stout for the value

Serving: poured into a glass from a 22oz bottle

A pretty dang good Bourbon barrel stout

S: all the notes you are supposed to get, vanilla, toffee, caramel, coffee, chocolate, bourbon, oak (just barely)

l: dark dark brown with probably the darkest head I have seen

T: very good and very well balanced. It is reminiscent of the top tier bourbon barrel stouts but maybe taken back a notch. It builds and then stops right before you get to the real burn of the bourbon. After that, it fades to vanilla, chocolate, and a nice light bourbon exhale.

m:not quite as thick as i would like, but I imagine if they made a thicker beer, it would have to be bolder as well. But it it close to some of the best.

Poured into a clear plastic cocktail cup at Craft Wine and Beer (Reno, NV), right out of their cooler.

A: Brown head faded quickly (might be the cup).

S: Smell is coffee and chocolates with a slight bourbon aroma. Smell is great, but wish it was a little stronger. May have been too cold out of the bottle.

T: the chocolate and bourbon is there but not as complex, and a little bit more bitterness that other BA stouts (which I like)

M: Body is little on the light side for an imperial stout. Good carbonation.

O: Very easy to drink and a great value for the price compared to other BBA imperial stouts. Went back and bought more. Recommend trying.

Thanks to jmgrub for sharing this one at mrbubbler's "end of the world" tasting.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, chocolate syrup, and bourbon. Taste is much the same with a coffee-like roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a great smell and tasty flavors.

Appearance is a decent sized brown-to-tan, thick, fine, slow to settle head, some lace, and an opaque brown black color. Aroma is cocoa, roast, whiskey, molasses, coffee, leather. Flavor's similar to nose, with sweet and tang up front, bitter in the middle, and a very long bitter sweet finish. Body is great with some bitter high points and alcohol warmth. Big, big beer. Great sipper.

Poured into snifter

A: pours murky black with about 3/4 inch head

S: Cocoa/chocolate, maybe slight bourbon, but wish there was more

T: strong cocoa, coffee, not very much bourbon taste but comes through the end and kind of lasts

M: kind of light for an imperial BA stout, crisp as well

Overall: it is a good barrel aged stout if it were a few bucks cheaper, compared to some of the BA stouts out there, needs some work if it wants to play with the other BA heavy hitters. Kind of generic. If pricing it over $12 I believe u might offer more. Or I just expect too much

i must have a rare "error" bottle that says heavenly hills instead of heaven hills.

wait for it...wait for it...dark in color, mocha colored head (bit of effort required to produce one).

subtle aroma of bourbon; pleasant and not overbearing, but masks all else. a little chocolate (no shit!?).

nice flavor, neither alcohol nor bourbon is overtly present, but flavors in general are subdued. it's either very well-balanced or rather plain, i haven't decided.

no strong alcohol or bitterness, drinks smoothly. no noticeable improvement or decline as it gradually warmed.

Pours a dark black with a two finger mocha head. The smell is good, however, slightly mild for the style. Vanilla, mocha, bourbon, dried figs, mild burn from booze. The flavor is pretty nice. Not as boozy as the nose would lead you to believe. Tastes like dark chocolate and whiskey. The biggest problem with this beer is the thin mouthfeel. I prefer a beer with strength. A beer that is so thick it fills up your throat and you try to talk but no sound comes out.
