Murphy's is quite famous in Honolulu, but not for being a traditional Irish pub. So, don't get too excited if you are visiting. I've been there many times, but it had been a while so I dropped in for dinner last night.

This is a nice, very comfortable bar to hang around, rub elbows and have some food. This place is a big supporter of the UH sports programs, so you can always watch some sports on one of the many TV's.

Located very conveniently on the corner of Nuuanu & Merchant St., on the edge of the business district & Chinatown. For tourists, it is not far from Aloha Tower. Of course, it is not very convenient for parking, but that is Honolulu. If you can't find street parking [last night I parked directly in front of the pub...my lucky day!] there is a public parking garage located one block west on Smith Street.

The bar itself has a nice bar area with a U shaped bar. There is also a larger dining area that can probably sit +/-150 people. There is a lot of wood and brick. Very attractive and comfortable feel to the place. In the dining room there are 3 TV's turned to sports. Dinner is served 5-10 p.m Mon. - Saturday. The bar is open: Mon. - Friday 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 a.m., Sat. 4 pm. - 2 a.m., Sunday 5 p.m. - midnight.

Food: pretty basic fair at somewhat reasonable prices [for Hawaii] with good size portions. Examples: pupus: Japlepeno poppers [$6.50], Calamari [$7.75], Blackened cheicken strips [$7.50]. They have salads, and sandwhiches & burgers [$8-$10]. Entrees: Fish-n-chips [$8.50], NY Steak [$14], Grilled pork chops [$11.50]. Desserts are also offered. Overall, the food is pretty good. Last night I only had pupus: Calamari [good, large portion], blackened chicken [ok] and endemame [soybeans, good...yeah, only in Hawaii!]. Also had the apple crisp for dessert [skip it]. Actually, the best thing was their french fries. Very, very good. Nice and crispy on the outside. I make fries at home, but not this good.

Service was very good. The waiter was very friendly and helpful [though he did bring the wrong soda for my wife]. His attentive service helped make the meal enjoyable.

Beer: a pint on tap will cost you $3.75-$4.75. Not bad for Hawaii. Their selection is also not bad [for Hawaii]: Harp, Guiness, New Castle, Smithwick's, Murphy's Stout, Bass, Kona Golden Ale, Stella Artois, Sierra Nevada PA, Sam Adams Lager, Pyramid hef., Red Hook IPA, Kilians Red, Bud Light, and a rotating selection [something from Pyramid last night]. In bottles [$3.25-$4.25]: Coors, Miller lite, Bud, Heineken, Corona, Michelob.

Overall, a nice place to go and relax. Be aware that it can get very full on weeknights. Go early and it will be more relaxing. Go late and mingle with the crowd. Up to you.
