Clean & refreshing, this Bavarian style lager uses four different German grains & three hop varieties to create an intricate flavor profile & a beautiful deep golden color. Helles is brewed in the style of Munich’s everyday drinking beer. Prost!

This and Heineken are my absolute favorite beers and they brew this 2 miles from my house! The only downfall is that at all of the Fordham/Old Dominion events including R2Hop2 and etc. they never have it to fill your growler! The taste is unbelievable! This is a great beer and typing this I'm going to get some at Dover Liquor Warehouse by my house! I am now editing cause I got the last sixer at store!

A: Golden with a white head.

S: It has a sweet grain and yeast scent.

T: Sweet grain flavors up front and hoppy at the end.

M: It is medium bodied with a dry finish and highly carbonated.

O: Very drinkable especially in warmer weather. I like how refreshing and clean it was. Would definitely drink again and have more than one in a sitting.

Bottle > Pint Glass
A - Pours a lighter gold color, no head, no lacing.
S - Barely any aroma here, a little lager yeast at best.
T - Yeast, and a slight hint of lemon rind i think.
M - Slightly bitter, but not awful, nothing stays on with you.
O - This is just a regular beer, nothing special about it.

I don't care for the style, but this wasn't bad looking. It's a bit darker than what I expected. Still clear, but it's darker than straw colored, instead a deep goldenrod shade. Despite the light shade of the helles, the head is a stark contrast in extremely bright white. A good two fingers thick, it retains well leaving a faint, splotchy haze behind.

It's got a nice malty nose to it. Slight savory overtones come wafting up and what I think is something lemony.

Everything in the nose shows up on the tongue. Malt backbone with savory hops dancing a little jig with kind of a yeasty finish.

In addition to not thinking the mouthfeel sucked, I actually enjoyed it a bit. There's the slightest addition of sweet citrus to balance out the German yeast and hops. It's still light bodied, but it's crisp and dry in the finish to round out the experience.

Overall it's nice beer for the style. It's easy to drink, and would be even better on a hot day. I generally avoid lagers, but I enjoyed this one.

Pours clear golden with a one finger fluffy head. Smells musty like hay, a hint of sweet honey, and maybe white grape. Flavor is very heavy on the sweet honey, with a lingering sweetness on the palate. Finishes a little dirty (sort of like a Miller Lite for me) with medium carbonation. Light mouthfeel but a little grainy. This is my first helles lager, and honestly this was decenlty refreshing. Honey flavor seemed to dominate and was very pleasant. Nice to relax with, but not particularly exciting.

Poured it directly from a cold bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - Nice pour; velvety, fluffy head; about 3 fingers worth of head initially but it faded fairly quickly. Light golden in color; almost transparent.

Smell - Pretty difficult to discern; lemon-like; zesty; a lager-smell; not too intense.

Taste - Lemon; subtle bitterness; refreshing; fairly simplistic, not much to elaborate on here; a standard lager in my opinion.

Mouthfeel - Slightly bitter; comfortable on the palate, though.

Overall - Average lager, not really something to write home about; a refreshing, light beer for a hot day on the beach. Not much to this one...

Appearance: Poured into a Pilsner glass is a clear and golden colored beer with thin white head.

Aroma: Lemon zest in the front, herbal notes, grainy, floral hop dryness in the nose.

Taste: Biscuity with some light malty sweetness and some slight butteriness. Lemon zest, grainy, citrus hop. The mouthfeel is rather crisp with a good dry finish.

Notes: A good example of the style and drinkable. Cheers.

Pretty good beer, although I'm not sure I would buy this myself (it came in my January Beer of the Month Club shipment).

It was a pretty gold color with a tiny white head. There was an absence of lace.

The aroma was fresh, outdoors, grassy.

Taste was similar to aroma. Grassy hops, a little bread.

This was a crisp, refreshing beer that I could see accompanying a slice of pizza.

Poured this into a Heavy Seas pint glass. Yellow gold in color, minimal head with fast rising bubbles. Smells of grains, Budweiser. Tastes like your average run of the mill lager, a step above the macros but that's about it. I would tolerate this at the ballpark with a hot dog or something of that nature, but otherwise will not re-visit.

For my 40th I got a gift for a Beer of the Month Club, and Fordham was one of the selections. So the Helles Lager is a good place to start. It has a nice orange gold color, and though there is some lacing, the head dissipates quickly. Smell has a light grassiness to it. The taste is solid for the style - grainy, a little herbal, not very bitter, and nicely balanced. The mouthfeel is similarly pleasant, with a pleasant malt presence. I definitely recommend this as a good lager.

This beer poured out as a clear clean looking yellow color with a foamy white head on top that settles into just a thin film on top of the beer. The smell of the beer is of sweet grains and a bit of yeast in there also. The taste of the beer is grainy and fresh tasting, it's crisp, clean and refreshing. The mouthfeel is light bodied with a decent carbonation to it. Overall this beer is pretty good for the style. It would something is wanna drink in the warmer months. Worth trying.

A - Pours with two fingers of white foam on top of a hazy golden body. The head settles at a moderate pace and leaves light lace on the glass.

S - a grainy aroma of malt with some spicy hops and a touch of phenolic yeast.

T - Light, sweet malt up front with a wheat like spicy note in the middle. Finishes with mild malt and some oddly fruity yeast character.

M - Mdium body, moderately low carbonation, and a sweet finish.

D - A bit strange, this be is more like a light wit or a fruity blonde ale than a helles. Not bad, but off for the claimed style and not something I would drink again.

A: single finger head with poor retention on a cloudy dull golden with slight orange hue body. nice lacing.

S: tangerine, mandarin orange fairly sweet.

T: orange citrus, wheat, light on the pale malts, yeast.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: sweet and easy to drink but it doesn't really taste like a beer much less a helles lager even. little to no hops and the malts are very understated.

Poured a clear, bright orange with a finger of bright white head. Weak, grainy aroma.

Moderate carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Big grain up front with light hops, caramel, corn, and dry biscuit mingling with grass on the finish.

Full-flavored but a little sweet...the "sticky" malt makes things a bit less refreshing.

Helles Lager
Fordham Brewing Company
Style: Munich Helles Lager
ABV: 5.40 %

Pours a clear straw yellow with a soapy head and some lacework. Aroma of bready, biscuity malt and a light floral hoppyness. In the flavor, crackery, bready malt notes, some biscuit flavors from lager yeast and a mild herbal bitterness. Well balanced easy drinking session lager. Clean flavor with nothing offensive or out of place.

Overall, this was a well made lager from Fordham. Drinks very nice and would compliment a wide array of dishes, from simple bar fare to elegant entrees.

First the aroma, it has that traditional lageresque grain quality that I just don't really care for. I am sure there are other aromas coming off this, but I just can't get past the grain smell. It doesn't smell BAD, it just smells ordinary.

The beer looks great when pouring. Lots of active carbonation with a crisp white frothy head. The color is that of dark hay and is perfectly clear.. it's really vibrant. Unfortunately that head dissipates very quickly and it just looks like a glass of apple juice after a minute.

Flavor is a bit better than the aroma. There is a grain note, defiantly, but I also get a nice herbal pepperiness that I really like upfront. Midpalate is a sort of herbal bouquet but it finishes with that dreaded toasted grain flavor.

Mouthfeel is quite nice, moderate to high carbonation and a light body with somewhat low ABV. Its not quite session able, but it's darn close and you won't be knocked out flat by drinking two or three of these in a sitting.

Thanks to TroyG2352 for this one.

App- A very clear yellow, lots of bubble activity with a puffy 1-1/2 finger white head that had good density. Fast receding and a little bit of cling.

Smell- A very traditional lager note. A bit grainy with a mellow wheat and grain sweetness. Had a touch of bitter behind it.

Taste- Really its okay. I just dont appreciate lagers for what they are. The grainy sugary sweet taste just doesnt do it for me. This was okay as I said. Some depth of flavor but just a pretty light lager with light taste.

Mouth- A medium body with a medium soft carbonation. A bit bubbly and residual bubbles. A little grainy on the finish.

Drink- It's a nice light beer. I am not the biggest fan of light crisp lagers but would be nice on a hot day.

Last one to try from the Fordham Brewery mixed 12 pack. Pours a light golden color, light to medium carbonation, smallish head. Not much going on aroma wise, faint hops. Taste is light to medium bodied, nice hop taste upfront, well balanced. Very crisp and clean but light on flavor. Kind of a run of the mill bock that most breweries throw out there, nothing too special about this to separate it from the countless other ones. A nice session beer, but the lack of overall flavor can't keep this above the rest. Good, but average beer.

M - Crisp mouthfeel with relatively low carbonation.

Pours a lighter straw color with a very thin head. Clear in clarity. Carbonation is light.
Aroma is toasted malts. Taste is bisuit and toasted malts, grassy hops and light spices. By spices I mean faint nuiances of lemon and corrinder. Maybe it leans tords the wit side.
Medium feel in the mouth. Watery around the edges. Semi dry and a tad bitter.
This would be an excellant chain restaurant beer.

Taste of malt and wheaty grass...slight banana. Spot on helles; although it could be a bit more bitter. Its crisp, and easy to drink.
Not sure why this got average reviews. This is a very good interpretation of a helles. While its probably not most people's favorite style, its still very good.

355ml brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a generic hefewessbier glass in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are average.

A: Pours a three finger head of quite thin character, hardly any cream, and poor retention. Colour is a transparent yellow.

Sm: Caramel, slight nuts, and that's about it. A light aroma.

T: Caramel, pleasant nutty hops, and barley. The nutty notes are quite nice, and certainly belong in the body. I'm impressed with those, but the flavour is a whole is imbalanced. It's decently built, though. I find it refreshing.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Not too thick or too thin. Suits the flavours well. Quite complementary indeed. Smack-your-lips quality is there as well. I suppose it's best called buttery?

Dr: Very drinkable. Good flavour. I'd like to try it on draught. Its biggest flaw is its simplicity.

On-tap at Ram's Head Tavern at BWI airport:

The beer appeared a light yellow-ish, with virtually no head. What did remain was a thin white head. Upon first glance, it did not look that appealing. The aroma of the beer was very light and mainly grainy and a light biscuit. The taste, like the aroma, was light and mostly grains and biscuit. The beer had a light feel to it and it was a bit watery. Overall, a less than average beer and one that I would not order again.
