Appearance – This gave up a beautiful brown body and a moderate off-white head.

Smell – The deep malts have a sense of richness to them, although the bouquet is not big in and of itself. There are some easy woodish and alcohol notes and maybe a touch of whisky.

Taste – The malts came over nicely from the smell, but I’m getting some good coffee in here as well. The alcohol is bigger, too, but not stingy.

Mouthfeel – This is not able to reach the measure of medium-bodied, but it’s thin in a good way and I won’t count that against it.

Drinkability – This is a good drinking porter that’s light yet at the same time fun to throw back.

Comments – Thanks to skyhand for bringing this over to the first bi-weekly Empty Cellar night.

Wow!

I am impressed with this porter from silver gulch. pours a very deep dark color with ruby highlights. Fluffy off white head stands tall but fades fast and lace sticks quite well. Nose is roasted malt and a touch of copper. The taste is alot of roasted malt up front, that quickly turns into some coffee flavor. Very roasty. a nice little kiss of hop bite on the finish. Mouthfeel is lacking here and should be a bit thicker, but is ok. Drinkability is quite good, I will defenitely get this one again for some sessioning. I am impressed, more of a reason to finally make the drive and check out the new brewpub in Fox. Good porter.

12oz bottle in Sam Adams glass
purchased summer 2006, found in back of closet last month so take this review for what it's worth :) I am reviewing this because it doesn't not seemed flawed.

A: very dark brown, only a little light comes through. No head or lace.
S: Chocolate, caramel, toffee, no hops
T: sweet malts, lots of dark caramel and toffee, the chocolate is less apparent compared to the nose, again no hops at all.
M: very low carbonation, almost flat, light on the tongue but not watery, I suspect that bottle caps don't work perfectly after this much time.
D: I remember this being an excellent beer, I bought a case at the brewery for the drive back to the lower 48. After 3.5 years, the only "flaw" is the very low level of carbonation. Even now, this is a very drinkable (and very good example of) porter. Well worth trying if you are in the area, I will definitely buy more when I can.

This porter is a dark red in color, with a small head out of the tap. Definitely light in color for a Porter.

Not a whole lot on the nose. A hint of alcohol, and some maltiness.

The taste is malty at first, with a touch of balancing hops. Slightly smokey and roasted flavors present themselves after the first few sips.

The mouthfeel is very light for a Porter, without the thickness that is usually associated with one.

Drinkability is high due to the light mouthfeel and the pleasant, non-challenging taste.

Had this beer at the brewery tap in Fox, Alaska.

Deep brown-red color in the glass. Nice tan head, good aroma with some roasted notes.

Rich, malty flavor with a dry finish.Moderately hopped with Cascades.

At 4.5% ABV, it's very drinkable, an excellent example of a brown porter style and a good session beer.

The body is black but not opaque with a tan head. Big roasty nose. Coffee, toffee, grass come in on the tongue. Lighter than stout but creamy, slightly soapy.

My pour resulted in a rocky finger's worth of light-tan head with decent retention. Nose had dark chocolate and charcoal aroma. Color was a deep-brown with ruby highlights. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full with a taste like chocolate on the tongue. Finish had a more bitter charcoal taste than I like in a porter, but overall, it was a winner.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with BeerandBlues2 (thanks!).

Poured a deep brown color with a red tint and a smaller sized tan head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, caramel, light smoke and light coffee. Tastes of chocolate, roast, caramel and had a light coffee finish. Tastes, like the body, a tad on the thin side.

12 Oz Bottle with a label of old Alaskan miners on the front. Porter pours a medium brown, not entirely opaque, and with very little head. Almost as much carbonation as a flat can of coke - I tried to generate head to little avail. Odour carries the scent of ethanol first and foremost, followed by a strong malted character. If there's anything lurking beneath these two, they don't get to come out and play.

Tastes smooth, malty, with a slightly bitter after. Flavour lingers shortly, before leaving a tingling sensation in the cheeks - almost like a carbonated bite, sans the carbonation. Smokey flavours emerge with time, especially as the beer warms, eventually turning to a charcoal-esq. nature. Goes down too fast, thanks to it's light body. It's worth noting that this beer is 4.3% ABW.

Strangely, this beer goes phenomenally well with chicken parmesan.

This porter is sweet, but simple. Not real heavy on the body, but heavier than most on the bitterness. Not too bad, but definitely not one of the best.

Bottle courtesy of NoonanDBarbarian poured into a snifter.

Pours a dark ruby with a small bubbly off-white head that dissipates very quickly leaving almost no lacing. The aroma is very tame, mostly sweet caramel malts with a hint of coffee. The taste is also very light with sweet malts and only a hint of the dark roasted coffee in the background. There is a generous earthy hop profile as well. The mouthfeel is a little thin with lots of carbonation. This is an average porter that is a bit light for my liking. Still drinkable though.

Pours a ruddy light brown. Doesn't look particularly porter-ish.

Smell is a strange earthy/rust/oxidized malt aroma. Ugh. Or is that stale coffee? Unsure.

Taste is all over the place. Hints of chocolate that are dying beneath a burnt, stale, earthy coffee and strange rust flavoring. Quickly grew wearisome to drink.

Would not revisit. Too thin for the style.
