look: 3 | smell: 3 | taste: 3 | feel: 3 | overall: 3

Appearance: Pale; straw colored body; no head, no lacing

Aroma: Juicy; malty; grassy

Taste: Tangy; bitter through start, mid and finish; not particularly good, but could be refreshing on a hot day

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

A: Pours light golden with a large white airy head that sets into decent lacings.

S: Neat and clean; bitter hops with crisp maltyness.

T: Bitter hops, noble. Rich maltyness.

M: Aftertaste lingers for quite some time, rich bitterness. Body is medium and carbonation rich.

D: A very nice German Pilsener, surprisingly enough it's made by Macro-brewer Spendrups in Sweden!?

Poured into Nonic glass. Served under medium-low natural light. Best before date: 12-JAN-2011. Batch 06:18N.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow brew with thick foamy white head. Medium-high effervescence, decent head retention and lacing.

Aroma: Balance is tipped towards the hop aroma with a nice underlaying malt character. Theres earthy, minty, piney notes reminiscent of certain German hops varietals;
Theres also some raisiny English-hops style notes.

Surprisingly the (hop) aroma fades away quite quickly giving in to the caramel and biscuit malt aromas underneath. It doesn't smell "fresh" but this could be in part due to its age.

Taste: Medium high intensity. Theres earthy, vegetable, pine and pollen upfront with some biscuit malt notes on the back. As it warms up it develops a candyish like sweetness to the tongue, which works well.

Palate: Light bodied, medium high to high bitterness, balanced, medium carbonation, finishes dry, long lasting lingering concoction of flavors on the tongue (caramel, vegetable, earth). Very refreshing, smooth and round. PERFECT palate for a pilsener, in my opinion.

Drinkability: I remember having the - now discontinued - 5% Old Gold and thinking of it as the archetype for the Pilsener style: straightforward, snappy strong bitterness and hop complexity.

So while i was disappointed in finding that they had chosen to remake the recipe, i was pleasantly surprised in discovering that this is still very good. The hop character, both in the nose and palate wasn't as "fresh", but this might be explained by it's shelf age.

It has a nice Quality/Price ratio, fits the style, is sessionable and i would bet that it pairs well with a profusion of light and medium-light dishes.

Oh, and the bottle is absolutely beautiful.

.33L emptied into a Pilsener.

A: Pours straw gold with a fluffy 1-finger white head which slowly receeds to a thin ring. Some lacing in the upper third of the glass.

S: Light, floral hops and bready malt.

M: Medium bodied with good carbonation.

T: Spicy hops at the fore with some sweet malt to balance things out. Nice blending of the flavors at the end. Aftertaste is astringent and grassy, lingering for a while, inviting the next sip.

D: A much improved version of Old Gold, better in every way to the old 5.0 that is now retired. Highly drinkable. Picked this one up in IKEA out of curiousity.

0.33l bottle poured in a wine glass at IKEA-Aubonne (Switzerland)

A: Gold yellow. Clear. One finger white creamy head.
S: Fresh barley malts and hops.
T: Simple beer. Tastes like a good Pilsener. Despite of being a German Pilsener, reminded me a Czech one. Light bitter end.
M: Light body. Medium carbonation. Very Refreshing.
D: Good. Very simple beer, nevertheless, very fair too. Recommended.

This made 'our' shopping day at Ikea much more bearable.

Enjoyed in the Ikea cafeteria.

Spicy german hops pungent in the nose, almost to the degree of Jever. A light golden body suggests a much thinner and less flavorful beer than it is. Clean, crisp, Pilsner. Finishes moderately dry and fairly clean.

A pleasant surprise.

The colour is yellow; the high white head sinks slowly down to a finger thick lid leaving lots of lacing.

The smell is hoppy in a German way with lots of bitter and noble hops. Very fresh, clean and bitter. There are also some mild notes of yeast and white bread.

The taste is mid-bitter and very fresh with lots of German hops. Some notes of white bread, a touch of metal and floral bitter herbs. The aftertaste is clean and bitter with some metallic hints and a touch of fresh wood.

The carbonation is medium strong, lots of medium sized fresh bubbles. The liquid is mid-smooth.

I don't know if it is just me, or is the new slightly weaker version cleaner and fresher than the old 5.0%?
